  1. Anthony, as subjective as the subject is, I think you picked some very nice amps. I doubt you could get a room full of audiophools and have them each write their Top 6 favorite vintage tube amps and have any of the lists match perfectly. I would venture to say that your list is probably about as good as anyone elses. But mine would have looked a little different.[] -Steve
  2. Whoa Timmy, cut back on the sugar.[] Seriously, I am glad you are enjoying your Cornwalls. Take care of them and they will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.
  3. Jeff, I am glad that you are going to be able to give them a more prolonged listen after you send yours to Bob for testing. I will be interested if after living with them for a few days if you notice some subtile improvements. My ears aren't trained enough to catch things in a short listen, and from your posts, I think yours are similar to mine. I have been thinking about upgrading the crossovers on my Altecs. I wish there were Altec folks who were generous enough to offer opportunities to demo them like there are here on the Klipsch site. That is pretty awesome. Bob Crites, just curious, do you by chance live in NW Ark.? -Steve
  4. I would think to really test out the updated xover a person would install them both and listen for a week or so to lots of different music and then decide. Just hooking one of them up for a short listen wouldn't give me a good indication of changes. Lots of changes are subtle and might take some time to realize. JMO In other words, Jeff, you really ought to give them a longer listen. Again, JMO.
  5. Read my lips! You are crazy![]
  6. I would make sure I got to hear them before I would spend that much money. It would be a different deal if you saw them in a thrift store somewhere for $20. $500 will buy a nice pair of used speakers, so take your time. If you have heard Corns and really liked them, you might want to patiently wait and get what you really want. That way you will have speakers you enjoy for a lifetime.
  7. I have been following this thread from it's start. Why? I really don't know at this point. I have made a couple of observations. It is clearly evident that Jeff is on a mission to convert everyone to his way of listening. I don't know if he is destined to become a tent evangelist or a door to door Amway salesman, but he is ruthless in his attempt to convert. Jeff, why is it that you can't accept the fact that all music lovers don't fall into the camp of listening that you do? There is no way I would listen at the SPL that you enjoy. Why? It isn't relaxing. I actually feel it would be stressful, which is not why I listen to music. When I was young it would have been important to me, but I have grown older and my taste and appreciation of the music has changed. I imagine as you get older, this might change for you also. Do I need 300 watts to enjoy 85db listening? I don't think so. If what you say is true, then wouldn't everyone only want high watts systems? If that were the case, why would any manufacturer market smaller watt units? As you can see, well apparently you can't, there are amps built for all types of music listeners. Just because you prefer mega watts, and there are others who also fall into your camp does not mean that mega watts is best for everyone. I don't know how old you are, but from your posts, you seem pretty immature, so I would guess you are pretty young. Give it a rest. Enjoy what you have. Everyone that reads here knows exactly what you enjoy and they have not tried to convert you. So please quit your revival of trying to convert everyone else. If any of us find our listening becoming lacking, some might consider your unending rant. But until then, accept that we are very happy with our hardware and the results we are enjoying. What type of jelly do you like on your toast? Do we all have to like the same flavor? Is it that important? Give it a rest and enjoy your music. That is what I plan on doing. -Steve
  8. I would say he is probably asking about top dollar for them then. One good thing about buying local is you can inspect them first and not have to worry about the shipping goons delivering a box of kindling. Maybe someone who has access to an Orions Blue Book will chime in. Have you searched eBay completed auctions? I am sure some have sold in the last 30 days. That ought to be a pretty good indicator.
  9. I am no expert on KG4's, but I would say $250 including shipping for a NM pair would be about max. I had a pair of 8.5/10 ones that I sold to a good friend for $150, but wouldn't have let them go for less than $200 to anyone else. Maybe someone more experienced with their values will chime in. I might be way off, but I think I am pretty close. The ones you have spotted, are they local or do they have to be shipped?
  10. Meagain, I would strongly suggest slowing down a bit and keep listening to your current system. Take the gentleman up on his offer to bring over his McIntosh for you to listen to see if this might be a direction you would want to move in the future. If you listen and choose wisely, you will be amazed and what you can do for very little investment. You might consider having a different system for use with the TV and having a seperate system for your music. You could use your KG4's with your current Video/TV setup and concentrate on a seperate amp for your Khorns. Patience is important and will bring you long term happiness. Plus it is easier on the pocketbook. Plan on having your system where you want it a year or so down the road and in the meantime, enjoy what you have. You will appreciate each upgrade that much more. Then sit back and enjoy the music. Your system will be better than 99.999% of what most people listen to. I have never owned Khorns, but have dreamed of a pair for a very long time. I ran across a very good deal on a pair of Altec 604 duplex studio monitors this year for $150 and patiently looked for something with tubes. I talked to alot of people locally and got a lead on a pair of McIntosh MC40 tube amps for $600 and am experiencing a slice of heaven. In the meantime, I listened to them hooked up to a 70's Marantz 2252B receiver and enjoyed it, but the Mc40's put me into a whole other audio world. Enough of my rambling. -Steve
  11. I have 2 of the 1000A receivers that are talked about on that site. One has a bad output transformer, but I am keeping it in case I need a donor unit. The working one has been gone thru and freshened up and am currently using it as a preamp. I am very pleased with the results. I have read that the iron in these are highly prized by DIY amp builders.
  12. Dan, thanks for the pics. I can see they are cornerhorns now. They really do look awesome and I bet they sound every bit as good as they look. Enjoy the holidays! Steve
  13. Dan, those Altecs look awesome. Excellent work. I use a pair of Altec Model 17's (604-8G Dulplex) in factory 620 cabinets and love'm. Are your patterned after the 620's, I noticed the dimentions look the same. I also used the felt under the cap on mine and it helped smooth out the highs and I like them better this way. I am fortunate to have my own room at the far end of the house, so I can listen to music as late as I want without bothering anyone. I will confess that I am listening to Christmas music tonight. Trying to get in the holiday spirit. Last year it came and went and I was left in the daily routine dust. 2 Mc40's Altec 17's Sansui 1000A Thorens 160/Linn LVX/Denon 110 Steve
  14. Forum newbie here (1st post) and couldn't figure out how to add to an existing thread, so hit reply to Dave post. My system was put together for $1500 and I think it is pretty good. I do agree that diligence, luck and patience are important, anyway they were in my case. 2 McIntosh MC40 tube amps ($600) Sansui 1000A receiver (using as preamp for phono and tuner) ($200) Altec Model 17's (604-8G Duplex studio monitors) in factory 620A cabs (9 cu.ft.) ($150 plus $96 for 1 new HF voice coil) Modified Thorens TD160? Linn LVX / Denon 110 cart ($225) Technics SL1300/ Goldring 1042 cart ($220) Denon DCD 620 CD player ($10) The Mc's and Sansui had recently been gone thru and freshened up. Anyway, I love horn speakers and had some KG4's until I stumbled across my Altecs. This looks like a good site of like minded folks.
