How close do they need to be? On one side, the speaker can side tight against the wall.  On the other side, the speaker will sit 3 - 5 inches away from the wall…is that too far?

My speakers are pushed into the corners and then toed in and sit exactly 6 " off the side wall, I have enclosed backs also...

  3. Hey Craig,

I sorry to hear about your health issues, glad to hear you are better!!! It's been a long time since we talked audio or Baseball, I hope we can catch up some one day soon.

I been having few little issues myself going through life as I am about to turn 66. I just keep on moving forward till the next thing pops up...

I guess I am kinda like weeds hard to kill LOL!!! Take care of yourself my friend....

In everything that I see people spending any effort on, if they have a choice in the matter, it's usually dissatisfaction that drives all of their activities.  Satisfied people usually spend their time on other things that they''re not satisfied with.

So in your quoted sentence above, you identify some fraction of your music that you find "unlistenable".  My percentage of late of "marginally listenable" recordings now is more like 95-99% for CDs (...I don't bother with phonographs nowadays, for the reason given below...).  Multichannel discs, like SACDs, DVD-As, and BDs usually are very good right out of the sleeve.  It's the people and their culture doing two-channel CDs and vinyl which seems to be the issue--not the loudspeakers or the other electronics, etc.

So in typical fashion, when I found a way to address my dissatisfaction with what I was listening to on CDs, I started to correct the tracks (using freeware).  The results were spectacular (to my ears...on the dialed-in Jubs).  So I kept fixing all my CD music tracks.  All the fixed CD tracks blow away any of the phonograph record versions now...and I mean "blow them away" emphatically.  I really can't listen to the distribution vinyl discs or CDs anymore.

I'm still fixing CDs--all those "old" CDs from 15+ years ago.  They are actually diamonds-in-the-rough (and I know that you've probably read about some of these findings, so I'll stop here).  Now I've got a pair of USB HDs that I keep my edited tracks on (one is for backup and the garage system) since I've fixed over 10K tracks to date.  I don't listen to the original CDs, only the demastered flac files.  If you were here listening with me, I know that you'd prefer the fixed versions by a wide margin, too.  It's not close.  Now, the only tracks that I don't like listening to are the ones from the 60s and early 70s that the recording quality was trashed when they were recorded.  But even those are now interesting to hear from time to time--albeit in fixed format.

So Jubilees aren't the issue--they're actually the enablers.  They enabled me to finally hear my favorite music tracks with all that extra "mastering" largely subtracted from the equation.  My wife has actually cried while listening to her old favorites now freed from their "one size fits all" mastering shackles that she's lived with during her entire lifetime.  I have to say that I'm still amazed by what I hear each time I listen to them.

This is kind of what scares me about buying the kit Cory sells to put on my khorn bottoms. Like you said alot of your music did not sound very good through the k402 horns. I am worried that I would have that same issue!!!

    Your thoughts are welcome....

One of the interesting thoughts that came to mind when looking at the K-402/Axi2050 performance is that the Axi2050 driver basically makes full use of the K-402 horn, i.e., the K-402 begins to lose horizontal directivity below 170 Hz, and that's frequency at which the Axi2050 performance really drops off the deep end (relative to the sensitivity of the Axi2050 above 6 kHz requiring similar PEQ boost for flat SPL response, or conversely, PEQ attenuation between 170 Hz and 6 kHz for similarly flat SPL response):

Celestion Axi2050 on K-402 and Jubilee Bass Bin Raw SPL Response.jpg

What this means to Khorn owners is that the Axi2050/K-402 horn on top of a Khorn bass bin would be a very good combination.  The only remaining need would be subwoofer performance below ~25-30 Hz to achieve a full range performance at Jubilee-like sound quality levels.  The Khorn bass bin really doesn't like to go above ~230 Hz looking at its phase response, and noticing that little "dogleg" of phase response right around 230 Hz (red trace, below):

Comparison Klipsch Jubilee Bass bin (blue) vs. Clone (red) Phase response.jpg

The other good thing about crossing so low with the Axi2050 and the Khorn bass bin (about 230 Hz, that is) is that it also avoids the dual mouth polar coverage issues that are exaggerated with the widely split dual-mouth Khorn bass bin (relative to the Jubilee bass bin--the KPT-KHJ-LF).

So in balance, I don't believe that there would be much difference in sound quality if using the Khorn bass bin or the Jubilee bass bin under a K-402/Axi2050 high frequency horn crossing at 230 Hz.  The phase and SPL response--as well as the polar coverage angles--would be pretty close to one another.  What this means is that Jubilee-like performance is still available to Khorn owners that are willing to spring for the K-402/Axi2050 costs, and using a good DSP crossover, such as a Xilica 2040/4080 or even just a miniDSP 2x4 HD ($205).

I find this very interesting and a positive sign of the direction I want to go to next!!!

  6. Hi Maynard,

Thanks for the reply, no he has not tried my amp in his system. He has just decided to go to a tubed amp. The info you gave will help he sits about 6'-10' away, loudness varies on the music content. Yes I think I may be bring my spare amp over to let him try it.

  7. My friend has a pair of Cornwall's and wants to get a tube amp, I told him that I like the SET sound so that's what he wants to try.

Any advise would be appreciated, I know Cornwall's are rated at 101db but I don't know how many watts would be a good match.

He has a small room if that helps.

Yes, I have 402's on my K-horns. I have tried many different horns (including Volti) over the years, the 402 is the best by a huge margin. The stock drivers that come with them are quiet good, though at some point I will try the Celestion given their stellar reviews. Active crossovers are a must to get all the goodness.

They fit easily on top and don't affect corner placement.

That is really good info and good to know thanks.

I know its been done, Not knowing the exact depth of the K402 assembly and depth of the Khorn, you might run into a situation where the K402 could push the Khorn out away from the corner.  I bet the Celestion drivers will help with a better crossover point.

Well I already have the BMS 4592 ND mid only drivers and I al all active using the Xilica 4080...
