  1. Any of the "Kings College Choir" Albums...
  2. I'm not probably not able to literate this as well as some others here , but I have had the feeling whenever I have had any dealings with law enforcement that everybody is guilty until they have "checked you out". They have a tendency to demand respect, but seem for the most part incapable of reciprocating the same. Let me say that I have never been charged with any crime, and am only talking about things like routine traffic stops, or giving assistance or information when a neighbours alarm has gone off. Police complaints are overwhelmingly made up of the same type of things I am talking about, and a large proportion of the general public obviously have the same issues. I respect "wvu80" defensive views, but he has an obvious bias, and feels that we are making a personal attack towards a profession his son is going into. Hopefully he will discuss some of these things with his son, and just maybe some of it will stick with him and he will not become a cardboard cut-out of some of the officers that I have had the misfortune to meet. I also think a lot of older people, especially, feel somewhat put out to be treated with less than a modicum of respect by these 20 something year old kids, wielding immense power that their short years on this earth has not equipped them for.
  3. No I have been to Brittan but not to the Isle of Man, it is a beautiful and would be well worth the visit. Best regards Moray James. Yes it is a beautiful place Moray, of course it was simpler times back then, we grabbed a tent and sleeping bag, rode onto the ferry to the IoM, found a farmers field and that was it. Our bikes were unreliable, though my "Ariel Golden Arrow" proved itself to be a lot more reliable than most. It was great to be able to ride around the same roads as our heroes were going to race on, but at nowhere near their speeds of course. It takes some real balls to race that circuit, especially back then. There have been plenty of racers who have not returned form the T/T races, solid rock walls are not very forgiving. A lot of the well known riders would not compete there, and I sure don't blame them, it was a death wish at that time.
  4. Wow, very cool! I used to read all about that race as a teenager, and dream about one day traveling all the back roads of Europe on a BMW. Yes it was a cool time, we had The Beatles, Cassius Clay, Mike Hailwood, and the Apollo Program that sent men to the moon. Mike Hailwood in particular was a special kind of man, and was a hero to many of us bike crazy Brits. Later in life he was to prove just what a man he was, and truly earn the accolade "hero". If you don't know of him his story is well worth reading, his on track battles with the equally talented Giacomo Agostini are legendary.
  5. Moray have you ever gone to the Isle of Man? I used to go during my teens mainly to watch the late great Mike Hailwood race...A fabulous experience for any race fan.
  6. My best friend is a retired 24 yr veteran police officer, he is of the opinion that the power that is given to police officers is too much for any human to cope with in some ways. He has never known a rookie enter the force and not become a changed person, and nearly always for the worse. He had a real hard time adapting when he retired, and we have often had cause to converse about his career, and his antics. He's a real nice guy, but he will admit that he was not always that nice while on duty. One thing he is adamant about is that the people who SHOULD become police officers wouldn't for the most part consider it as a career.
  7. That may be true, but we are commenting on tactics that were used, and that some of us see as being unnecessary. We don't need the training, and are discussing this in the hope of maybe understanding "police tactics". There is a large proportion of the population who are questioning this very subject at this moment, as I am sure you are aware, and I can't think for one minute that you don't think there is some validity for their concerns. For my part I am fully aware of the power of most of the weapons being discussed, and capable of using what common-sense I was gifted with. Fair enough. There are NONE of us here who want police over-reaction, but on the other hand, there are NONE of us here who condone the terrible violence done in our country, by our citizens, to our citizens. We NEED to be protected from these people, and saying to the bad guys PLEASE DON'T KILL OR ROB US just ain't good enough. A real example I had direct knowledge of, for you to further comment on: Earlier THIS YEAR in Myrtle Beach, there were SEVEN gun homicides by "black bikers" during Black Biker Week (I hate that expression, but it is what the Black Bikers call it). What level of "tactics" and "weapon's power" does your "common sense" tell you is necessary to protect citizens from those kind of killings next year? You want me to offer a solution to a scenario I have no knowledge of??? C'mon now, offer up a link to the story. I also thought we were discussing officer involved shootings.

  9. So where does it end, does this mean that they can bring out their grenade launchers, or some of their other "military" equipment that a lot of police departments now have courtesy of the Pentagon and the 1033 program?
  10. I 100% agree! Ridiculous, and irresponsible behavior by those cops! I have been involved professionally with kids who have called in bomb threats to the HS's in our area, as I'm sure you know it happens 2-3 times a year. They get caught because they are not as smart as they think they are, then they get convicted for a juvenile crime, then they get assigned to your friendly neighborhood social worker, me. But what you are describing is over the top. My experiences with local law enforcement has been good, but if I was exposed to what your son had to endure, my opinion would change. I understand your defence as to why the cops wouldn't use a taser, and why you wouldn't bring a taser to a knife fight...But could you offer an explanation of why the cops bring an AR-15 to a knife fight according to the OP?
  11. No this would not follow their training, they are obliged to shoot at the largest area of the target, and keep shooting till the threat is stopped.
  12. Yes, and the statistics back you up.
  13. Yes, you are missing something; the knowledge and training of a skilled police officer. I don't say that flippantly, as you are obviously intelligent and thoughtful, but I want to make the point, there are things about police training you don't know. The police don't just show up to a call and then try to figure out what to do, they 1) show up with the idea of resolving the situation peacefully, but are capable of responding to a show of force according to their training, and 2) they have a professional goal to safeguard the public, not just the perpetrator, and 3) they have a personal goal of going home safely at the end of the shift. As to your second question, you ask "why wasn't taser used?" There is an effective range in which a taser can be used with I think is within 5-10 feet feet, as there is an effective range police know a knife wielding person can attack, which is I think around 30 feet. The bottom line is you don't bring a taser to a knife fight. Tasers do NOT always incapacitate, and tactically they are not the appropriate response to a knife wielding person. Does common sense come into play anywhere ?
  14. I certainly don't know the answer to this problem, but it is a problem also here in Canada. I do believe the investigation of any police involved shooting should be carried out by an independent agency. The case involving the 13 yr old with the fake gun is a difficult one, I saw the video, and that "kid" was just asking to be shot by behaving in the way he was. I'm not being un-caring when I say that, but the police simply weren't given the time to assess the threat, all they saw was him pulling the gun from his waist. A darn shame a life was taken, but I think any kid nowadays knows that even waving a fake gun around is not a wise thing to do.

  16. Thebes, your taste in music is only exceeded by your literary prowess....
  17. Yeah!!! I often play that, it's guaranteed to get my wife dancing.... ....Great album.
  18. they are! so odd, but a minor nit i guess. Yeah weird but no big deal. Enjoy! I've seen that before on some vintage equipment, I believe one of my H/k twin receivers also has them backwards, but it makes sense when looking at it from the back.
  19. That's what I thought JL, It's Harman Kardon...how bad can it be...
  20. Picked these up at the thrift store. H/K 3270 receiver, HD 720 cdp..also included a Hk DC-520 Cassette Deck new in the box...a nice set-up for the garage for $100. I'm quite pleased with the sq of the receiver.
  21. I have issues at times separating the art from the artist. I know, it's a me problem. I don't think you are the only one. Richard Wagner (think Ride of the Valkyries) was a raging anti-semite, and was made an icon of the Third Reich by Adolf Hitler. To this day the Israelis have an unofficial ban on his music. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/06/20/what-s-behind-israel-s-unofficial-ban-on-wagner.html Henry Ford was also a "raging anti-semite" but they don't have a problem with driving a Ford....
  22. It's the proper Rover engine, it will still leak a little...
  23. Keep your knock offs tight! Call me crazy but the exhaust note of a MG or Austin Healey is one of my favorite sounds! You're not crazy, a well set-up MGB has a nice exhaust note to it.
