It's still a good amp, considering its age; i think it was quite expensive even back then. I wouldn't say it can compare with upmarket actual brands, such as musical fidelity or whatever, but it's surely better than a brand-new "mid-fi" amp from yamaha, kenwood, onkyo... So if you like the sound, stick with it, it's built like a truck! Frans Oh no you didn't! You did not just lump in Onkyo and Yamaha with Driftwood! (i mean Kenwood) WTF!? You oughta throw Denon and Marantz in there too then... <grumble> Just to get in on the conversation though, my Dad's got an old Sansui he got before i was born when he was stationed in Korea (it's about 30 years old now) Still have the manuals and such, will check out the model. Still cranks and sounds great - very well built... -Rich

    Crossed wires

OK, first off, a big DOH, BART! <choke, strangle> Now, in my opinion, you just gave him a good reason to upgrade to something decent. The guys where i went to look at Denon receivers called it "driftwood" I've got an old Kenwood i picked up years ago (let's see, Betamax was still around, umm 10 years ?) Anyway, still going strong, but i've seen and read enough on them, well if you look inside, you'll see. Lots of ribbon cable, very small capacitors and transformers, etc. but i digress... As far as repair, first thing i would try is just unplugging it and letting it sit for a few minutes and then see if it comes back up. Hopefully the amp shut down before it self destructed and unplugging it will reset it. If not there may be a fuse internally or a reset button (?) like on a power strip. Check the manual, yea that bunch of paper you threw aside when you opened the box just like i did when i got my Yamaha. -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 06-24-2001 at 11:52 PM
  3. Welcome to the next level cable SUCKS! DISH has got some cool stuff - my girlfriends father has the TV setup, as well as the newer internet stuff where you can send and recieve (at decent speed) through the dish (no dial up required). It's all on lease for the 1st year too. Pretty cool... I've got a DirecTV setup, which has been great! There cust. service has always been outstanding, even at 3 in the morning. There are some areas that have to call another company for service/problems which sucks, cuz they aren't even required to be open 24/7 like DirecTV is - they're sub'ed out i guess? Anyway, as far as local, i've got a dual LNB dish, which runs into a clip-on antennae from Terk (TV42 - combines signals and boosts) and then you split it out with a diplexer at the receiver. Works great if you're not in a valley or in between buildings - wouldn't cut it in NYC. You can also pay for the locals, but you only get the big 4. I've also got it split outta the receivers - 2 tv's to each receiver. Works pretty well, especially with the sony receiver which has an RF remote. Otherwise, you can get an IR->RF->IR thing or get an RF remote that has a "receiver" that sends IR to the remote location (like the One For All 9800) I like the Sony menus, etc, and the Hughes i have as a second is decent too. Dunno about the RCA's. -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 06-24-2001 at 11:37 PM
  4. Holy geez - those professionals... wow! Hope to pick up a set of Forte II's someday, but for now, a new engine for my Chevelle and a KLF-C7 shipping Monday will have to suffice - yea, it's a tough life... "If everyone donated 50 bucks, I could get a couple pairs of Heresys and be a Happy Camper." Yea, as soon as i get my money tree growing full tilt in the back yard i'm there for ya man!!! eyes: -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 06-24-2001 at 11:12 PM
  5. Does breaking in include breaking the front MDF around the woofers loose from the cabinet? Just kiddin, already called Klipsch and i'm gonna pick up some liquid nails on the way home this morning... Seriously though, i buy into the woofers breaking in. There's definatly a difference in bass now that i've used my 30's for a couple months. How much change is real vs. how i listen now is hard to say, but coming from my old roomates DCM's ("thick" bass) to the tight bass of the Klipsh was an initial change. LOVE my KLF's though! -Rich P.S. Wanted to throw in a big thanks for the great attitude i recieved regarding this when i called Klipsch. Hard to find good cust. service these days and i really appreciate it when i do find it! This message has been edited by rhawki on 06-24-2001 at 10:43 PM
  6. Love my Toshiba TheatreView, an older model, but Toshiba projections get thumbs up everywhere i read. It's held up well, and survived two moves (plus delivery) with no problems. Got nothin against Sony TV's though. Don't know much about there large screen stuff, but there picture tubes are outstanding. Some of there other stuff is a different story... -Rich
  7. I LOVE my Yamaha RX-V3000!!! I started with a Denon 4800, which after reading everything i did on the internet, i was expecting amazing results. Boy was i disappointed - virtually no bass, ear piercing highs, unbearable to listen to. Could've been a bad unit, but now that i have the Yamaha, i've never looked back. The other thing that really turned me off about Denon was there cust. service, or lack thereof i should say. There are a lot of Denon freaks here though, and that says something for there stuff. I liked an older Pro-Logic Onkyo my friend has on the KLF's, but i haven't heard the new stuff, and again, cust. support sucks. I think the bright thing that some refer to with Yamaha must have been on the older units, cuz i actually kicked my treble up a notch on my KLF-30's. If i were going all out though, i would seriously consider a Marantz SR-19. I like the remote that came with my Yam, it took a day to get used to, but since i figured it out, it's been great. It doesn't have pretty picures like the Pronto, but it controls everything except the garbage disposal! -Rich
  8. I semi agree with the above. When i got my Denon 4800, it was ear piercing, no bass, painfull to listen to my KLF-30's, but Onkyo and Yamaha sounded fantastic on them! I returned the Denon and got a Yamaha and now my KLF's sound clear and warm, and i could listen all day. My point is try another receiver before blaming the speakers. Also try different speaker cable - my parents have an HK that sounds pretty darn good for the price, but then again, the Denon should have sounded great on my KLF's... What kinda speaker wire and hardware did the audio shop have driving the SB's? -Rich
  9. I'm with ya on the UPS thing - UPS SUCKS!!! Recently they've "delivered" two different packages that are tracked as deliverd and don't show up til the next day (kinda hard to overlook a box full of exhaust pipe!). They're actually getting torched pretty hard over on ugetheard.com too. Had good luck with FedEx though. Airborne's been the best. -Rich
  10. OK, i'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but have you tried different speaker cables, or tried bi-wiring them? It could be like you said, and that's just how the receiver is, but i would try bi-wiring, and then trying diff. cables for the low freq to see if that helps... Although i've never used silver cable, supposedly it will tighten up bass, but it may also make it somewhat anemic. -Rich
  11. Looks like a great setup... The only concern i'd have is with heat from the 3300. I've heard it's a prob with those, but have never dealt with them. I think some who have them in enclosures used extra fans to keep it cool. "Welcome to the next level" -Rich
  12. Sweet! Thanks for the info folks! Hopefully everything's ok and it's my ear tricking me, not a speaker prob. -Rich
  13. Hey everyone! Every now and then i could swear i hear a raspy sound coming from one of my KLF-30's, ususally on mid-range tones. It's not the back coming loose as far as i can tell, but i was wondering if there's a CD or something i could buy to generate and hold different tones so i can try and isolate this. Any suggestions? Actually, i guess i could use my SoundBlaster and a software of some sort... hmmmm Thanks! -Rich
  14. J&R was, but they stopped showing/carrying. I think U-Bid was too - not sure anymore... -Rich
  15. hah! Get hold of Denon - that's a good one... whew oh, you're serious? Actually, that was one of the reasons i didn't like Denon. It's easier to get hold of the man in the moon. Good luck! I think i would look at a Pronto, although i've seen Denon remotes around in audio shop displays (mainly the rc-8000) I'm assuming you've tried searching on the internet? Try on Yahoo shopping, i've had a lot of luck finding what i want there... -Rich
  16. OK, i'll buck the system here! After getting my KLF-30's, it was time to pick up a receiver, and i had pounded audioreview for a few months trying to figure out what i wanted. I finally settled on the Denon 4800 - what a disappointment! Could have just been a bad unit, but it was really grating and had NO bass no matter what. I even had the audio shop guy out and still ended up returning it. I'm still bummed about that - i really wanted that Denon. Anyway, i moved on to a Yamaha RX-V1000, and then traded up to the 3000. WOW. Love it!!! Would like to up to the V1 but probably won't. The V1 has the Burr-Brown DAC's and some other quality upgrades. BUT, i still can't figure out where people get this "bright" image from regarding Yamahas? I heard bright and harsh on the Denon, but no matter how much i crank the Yamaha, it's still smooth and easy on the ears. I couldn't take the Denon for more than 5 minutes... Had a bud bring over an older Onkyo, which also sounded good, so moving on... Don't know a lot about it, but you may wanna look at the Onkyo 989. Comperable to the 5800, although, i never got to the point of listening to either. I would also advise checking out a Marantz SR-19. Had the pleasure of listening to one during my receiver search (compared it to the V1), and it really sounded good. A couple guys at the shop had the (SR-18, VERY similar) and loved them. Again, a very smooth clean sound, and if i were gonna upgrade from my Yamaha, i would probably go with the SR-19. Oh yea, when i mentioned my issues with the Denon at the shop where i got my Yamaha, the guy said that, other than the 5800, the Denon amps are made by Marantz! Anyone know anything about this? -Rich
  17. The only thing i would worry about with the cheapies is how they would react with the gold on the binding posts/whatever connection. I believe tin and gold is the big no-no, which may be what those joe-blow crimps are made of. Besides, the better crimps don't cost that much more, is it really worth it not to do it "right" the first time? Don't mean to step on any toes here, i'm just very picky about that kinda stuff - why spend loads of $ on good speakers and components and then go cheap on the connectors, ya know? -Rich
  18. Originally posted by talktoKeith: Got any idea who makes the recievers with the "party mode" you spoke of? A lot of recievers have this now. I was recently looking REALLY hard at recievers and ended up with a Yamaha which has the "party mode" etc, but all the others in the range i was looking at had it too, such as Marantz and Denon. There were a couple that had it up until there top line though which i thought was kinda strange. I believe the latest Marantz SR-19 was like that, and maybe the Yamaha RX-V1 (i got the 3000) I really like the "surround stereo" though, the RX-1000 had 5 ch stereo and the 3000 has 8 ch Stereo (!). Some people claim that it makes the sound slightly anemic, but that may depend on brand and room acoustics. Of course, the stereo purists hate it, but you can always pop it back to true stereo... The new DVD audio is pretty bitchin though - like the Metallica video at the end of MI:2, outstanding! -Rich
  19. My first thought would be a power issue, but it sounds like you've got that covered already... My second thought would be that there is something there throwing off electrical noise. I had a halogen floor lamp next to my KLF-30's, and with everything off (even with the speaker cable disconnected), i would get a low freq. hum... It drove me batty until i turned the light off and everything was ok. Needless to say, the light moved I'm not really familiar with that sub, but i can only assume it has a gain control of some type, what happens if you turn it up or down? -Rich
