  1. On Sunday I wired 80% of my new room for sound. It appears that my dilema has been solved by a doorway. I will have to put the Cornwalls on the rear channels and the LaScalas on the centers. There is a doorway that will be right underneath one of the rear speakers which will not allow the LaScala over it. I will have to put the Cornwall there on its side in order to maintain the headroom. EJ

    More Blues ...

Jasnob, I play through a crybaby by Jim Dunlop. The best blues pedal is a VOX though. I also have a few Snarling Dogs effect boxes that I occasionaly use to throw a little more distortion into the mix. Unfortunately I have not played much since I graduated from college (4 years ago). I am going to start playing again though. I used to play like 4-5 hours a day everyday when I had the time. I dedicated all of my time to blues jamming, I hardly know any songs. I have a Fostex 4 track, a Boss Dr-5 and a sequencer. I used to just lay down alot of jam tracks. I tried teaching my friend how to play bass so we could play and try to get something going but he just didn't have the dedication. The extent of my actual band palying is one day my friend said that he had met some guys that had a band. They visited for a while and he had told them that he had a firend that played alot of guitar. Anyeay they had all of their gear set up in a rental garage and invited me to come over and jam with them one saturday. I am not sure exactly what kind of music they played but I think it was just pretty much cookie cutter crap. Thier guitar palyer didn't have clue what I was doing when we started jamming and eventually he dropped out of the jam. Anyway I got there and just told them to kick a funky beat and give me a bss line. We ended up jamming for like 3 hours nonstop. It was a blast and they were pretty blown away becuse I don't htink they had ever done ay realy jamming, like blues type jamming. I don't think the leaders of the band wanted anything to do with me but the drummer wanted to start a band with me. He ended up bringing his drums over to my house and we jammed for a couple weeks but with no real bass player things never really developed and I don't think our styles really clicked. I pretty much just play for me, the satisfaction I get out of my expression through the guitar. I also agree with you GL's are the best strat around, much better than a fender. I am kind of a DIY guitar player. I did all of the mods on my LP. I also adjust my own neck and grind my own frets. I have almost wore out the frets on my LP and I got it like new. The frets are like real wore down where I do alot of bending. I may have to get it refretted in a while. I have also built a gutar from old guitar pieces. It sounds pretty damn good but I dont really like to play it as much as my LP. FWIW, my hero is Jimmy Page, but I really don't try to play like him. EJ
  3. arto, It works for me. I like the way they sound spread apart from each other. You might run into problems if you were unable to get you mains spread out from the center with such a big center stage but if you are able to get some separation in terms of distance I don't hear a problem. My fronts are still inside the width of the TV, ie the centers are not on the sides of the tv. I can easily detect center material. No problems with imaging. Front soundstage is seamless. EJ
  4. Mike, It was great having you over. Your the first person I have had over to listen to my system since I have lived in Orlando. Unfortunatly I don't get out much. We will definitely have to do it again. If I remember right we hitting 120 distortion free db's per the new spl meter on the khorns with no problem. BTW, I really liked your Vette. EJ

Jasnob, No reason to defend your opinion. I guess its just a matter of opinion here. I do like clapton for his blues playing ability, but your correct he is no master such as Stevie. I wasn't trying to beat up on your first post, sorry. I guess I just think Jimi was a god and Stevie was a deciple. Anyway I also play guitar, blues guitar, Les Paul Custom Copy w/all coils split and I run thorugh a Wah straight to amp, no effects boxes just cranked. I like to tune a half step down and play in B-flat with an open E-flat. EJ
  6. Arto, Great explaination that hasn't come out yet about caneling. I run two on my center but I keep them about 5 foot apart to minimize this, plus as I have stated in posts before I DO NOT toe them in at the listening spot. I let them dispurse to it. I always new there was a reason I did this but to me it just sounded better. EJ
  7. Danny, I havent really thought about waht wire I was going to use yet. I will probably use some of the wire that I am going to use to wire my system with. Its not a special brand or anything just good ole 12GA Oxy free in wall speaker wire. As far as how they sounded in a different room I really can't say because we never really demoed them. We listenedd to them when they were hooked up as surrounds on his system but never singled them out as a main channel. EJ

---------------- On 11/20/2002 5:50:28 PM JasN00b wrote: hmmmm stay away from eric clapton... hes boring... ---------------- ??? OK boss. JasNob, As far as your comment on Clapton goes, playing blues is not about how fast or intricate you are. Clapton is talented and has some pretty serious chops. He plays old school blues. It all about voicing. Not all great blues players are awesome guitar players(admittedly BB King for Example), but they know which note to play and when, also it's not the note, it's how it's played. His "radio play" top 40 type albums are boring. He is a fantastic blues player. My first impression is that you are not a true blues listener. I agree with you that Stevie is awesome, but Jimi did it all before him. Jimi pretty much did everything but invent the blues. The progressions that Jimi invented and the way he used the notes to voice the music was masterful. Jimi had the ear and the skill, I can't think of anything that Stevie did that was especially innovative compared to Jimi, he was just a super fantastic player with alot of soul and alot to say(with his guitar). He was following Jimi's lead. I love Stevie's music and I wish he was still around. I had tickets to his last show but my Dad gave them away to a friend since it was like a four hour drive from where we lived. My dad and I talked about going but we figured we would catch him the next time around. What a mistake that was. He is missed by all. We were blown away when we found out what happened. It was a very sad day. Just my $0.02 EJ
  9. Q, Well I might just have to take you up on that offer for the AA's. Maybe you will let me demo them, if you would rather not that's OK too. And you will get the cd's regardless. I haven't burned em' yet because I don't have any blank disks right now and a few of the disks I want to give to you are still in boxes from my dads move, he has the originals. I personally have burned copies but I don't want to burn from them, they are pretty beat up. When I reburn some of the copies for myself I was going to burn them for you too. Sorry I didn't give them to you when I picked up the speakers. I really wan't planning on picking them up as early as I did so I wasn't really prepared to have the cd's ready. Randy, Thanks for the schem. EJ
  10. I will have to do a test because my initial impressions of the HDTV vs. DVD I thought they were about the same. Now that you mention it though the HDTV is really detailed. You can actually see the tiny little hairs on peoples faces, and I'm not just talking on extreme close ups. The resolution is amazing. As far as your dilema with the firewire, I think your probably going to have to wait awhile. The only thing I can think of is putting together some kind of concauction of stuff to run it through your computer and back into the VCR. I have no idea if they make component in cables for computers but if they did it may be possible to send the signals into the computer and then out of the computer if you have a firewire port, but it would be a huge pain in the arse and probably isn't even worth messing with. I will keep my eyes peeled on the internet to see if anything is out there. EJ
  11. Artto, That was a great post. Welcome to the BB, your participation is welcomed. I am building a HT romm right now. The inside dimensions are 28.5' x 23.5' x 9'-4". The walls are block. I am planning on screwing and glueing all of the sheetrock to the firring strips and putting polystyrene insulation in the gaps. I also intend on puting two outlets in for components, both 20A each and on their own circuit. I will be wiring the whole setup myself with 4-wire 12ga OxyFree copper and linking two wires for each channel for an effective 9ga wire. Do you have any comments on this room size. By your caculations it should be flat down to something like 30hz. EJ

    More Blues ...

Vladi, So you like blues. Thats pretty much the mainstay of my listening. Here are a few I reccommend in no particular order. *SRV - Live at Carnegie Hall *Tommy Castro - No Foolin'(Live) & Can't Keep a Good Man Down *Jimi Hendrix - Blues & South Saturn Delta(Must Haves) *John Mayall & Blues Breakers featuring Eric Clapton(Dubbbed the BEANO album) *BB King and Bobby Bland - Together Again *Buddy Guy w/GE Smith and the Saturday Night Live Band - Live! The Real Deal *Eric Clapton - From the Cradle *Eric Clapton - The Blues (2 Disks) *Muddy Waters - Box Set *Paul Rodgers - A Tribute to Muddy Waters(Muddy Waters Blues) This is just a few I remember off the top of my head. EJ
  13. Mike, Blow by Blow is out on SACD too. I will touch base with you before friday evening to let yo know if going to the swap meet is a possibility. EJ
  14. Randy, Can you elaborate a little on how I can do the upgrade. Step by step instructions would be appreciated, if you don't mind. Thanks, EJ
  15. Dale, I think that is what I will do. I just really like the sound of the LaScala's and with them bing way in the back of the room up on the ceiling I think the great midbass punch from them will be much more effective than the cornwalls. So the decision has been made, I think: Khorn's-Mains LaScala's-Surrounds Cornwall's-Front and Rear Centers Heresey's-Front Effects Thanks, EJ
  16. KJ, Considering what you have to work with I think I would keep the Heresey's on the rear. Although they are a better match than the CLF7 for the center I think they will be more appreciated in the rear until wyou are able to get another set of Heritage to replace them in the rear. At that point I would move both to the center. Note that with the Heritage line will never have the dispersion of that CLF7 because of the horn it has. Two hereseys on the center with a little distance between them, pitched down, and not angled in at the listening point does a pretty good job of making the front soundstage seamless and keeps the center sounding prottey wide open. EJ
  17. ProDJ, They look very solid. You should veneer them with some nice walnut or black. I have seen some of the veneer work that qman has done. He says its pretty easy to do, you just need a router to finish off the corners nice. EJ
  18. How about some pics of those MONSTER speakers. EJ
  19. Thnaks for the refresher's and comments guys. It's nice to know you guys are always on call for electronic expertise. EJ
  20. Ears, You are in need of some serious therapy!LOL You make us all jealous, but at the same time I must ask myself if this person doesn't have a screw looses somewhere, either that your your insanely rich. If the latter is true how about helping a guy out? I would love to store your unused equipment, no charge for a great guy like you. Can we be friends? EJ
  21. Mike, Yeh I will have to listen to yours agian regardless. Also I have all of the diagrams to build the crossovers. I even requested catalogs from all of the places that Al gets his parts from so I am go to go all I need to do is start ordering. I am not sure yet if I am going to build any yet though. I like the way the khorns sound so I don't think I need to mess with them. I will make some adjustments to the LaScala's to see if I can get the tweeters to open up. I will just have to expirement alittle to see what I can live with. The highs just don't seem to sparkle at all in the LaScala's. The mids and the tight Bass are great sounding. I have been throwing around the idea in my head of installing squakers from Khorns/LaScala's in my Cornwalls also. This would require a modification to the back of the cabinet and a crossover change. If I did this then I would have perfectly matching speakers all the way around. So many things I would like to do, and so little time. Kinda like that one post said, Doesn't anyone just listen to music anymore? Well last night I did. I had everything hooked up and me and the wife just chilled out and listened to some regae on one of the dish network music channels. It was very relaxing. I'll have to have you over soon to see the system. When are you free next? Maybe the wife and child can go somewhere and you can come over and giver a listen. EJ
  22. Origignally i was going to use the LaScalas as center channel but I am starting to wonder if I should use the Cornwalls for the center and use the LaScala's for the rears. I figured the laScalas would be the best match for the Khorns plus they do so well with the midrange sound which is a big part of center channel. But I am starting to think that the system overall would sound better with them on the rears. I am so confused because the Cornawalls have better bass response so they would be better on the rear but the LaScala's I think sound better because of the folded horn but don't have as much bass. Damn, I hate these dilema's. EJ
  23. Refrigerator magnets or paper weights would be a good use for them. EJ
