  1. Greetings, all! I'm looking to upgrade to a new pair of headphones. Right now I'm torn between the Image X5 and the Future Sonics Atrio. Both look like very promising pairs, and at this point in time I'm liking the Images more. What I've read in reviews would make it seem as though the Atrios would have better sound, but the Images, by my understanding, top the Atrios in a few crucial fields that'd make sacrificing a little sound quality OK (fit, comfort, build quality, size, etc). What I need to know now though is if there's anything protecting the driver from lint/ear gunk that may get in there. My current pair (V-Moda Vibes) have a metal mesh that protects the driver, and I do have to clean it every few weeks. I'm almost certain that the Atrios have nothing protecting the driver, and since whatever pair I get will spend a lot of time being jostled about in a pocket, that lack of protection simply won't do. Since I can't find the info out anywhere else, I've turned to you guys. Is there anything protecting the driver from debris that may get in there? And while I'm here, how good a job do they do of holding onto the ear tips? I've had a few ear tips make a break for it when exiting my pocket, and one time I even lost one while raking when the rake pulled the headphones from my ears and the tip fell into a pile of leaves. Also while I'm here, how are microphonics on this pair? My current pair is pretty vulnerable to it, which can get irritating after some time. The Atrios seem to do a pretty good job of coping with microphonics, but for the X5s some reviews have said it's not too bad while others have made bigger deals of it. Though since I can't talk back to reviews I'd like to hear from a few owners.
  2. Hi guys. I know this is a Klipsch board and all, but I don't know any other hifi message boards. Anyway, I'm curious as to how a tweeter inside a midrange driver works. I know various speakers have done it (I've seen it on a pair of Insignias at Best Buy and I think Thiel does it in one of their pairs), but I can't find anything on how such a thing could work. Thanks in advance.
  3. My question has been answered, this thread can be deleted.
  4. Is it a good sub? Care to share the model/price for a new one? Right now I'm really liking the Polk PSW10, since it'll be great for my room size (pretty small), and I can get it for around $100 new on Amazon. Also, I do kind of like the idea of getting a good condition Promedia set for $120, but I don't want to buy anything but new. I've heard of people having durability issues with their sets. I'm not that afraid of it, but I don't know anything about the previous owner, so even if it's in good working condition when I get it, some part of it could be worn enough to break after I've received it. I know I'm being a little overreactive, but I don't want to risk it.
  5. Hey everyone. To make a long story short, I can't find a pair of Promedia 2.1s anywhere. Best Buy stopped carrying them, they've been out of stock on the Klipsch site for a while, and every online store I can find either doesn't sell them anymore, or is out of stock. I'm starting to think they've been discontinued. Anyway, I really need a new pair of speakers as soon as I can get them. My old Logitech set died (they weren't that good anyway) and I'm stuck using some old Harmon/Kardons. The only speaker set(s) that seem comparable to the Promedias seem to be the M-Audio AV 40s or AV 30s. I haven't used them, but I don't like that Logitech pair that people say compares to the Promedias, and I assume that studio monitors will sound pretty good. The problem is, they really are made for people's home studios and whatnot, so they don't have a proprietary sub. I'm on kind of a tight budget, so I can't get an HT sub, not even a small one, and M-Audio's only sub ($500) is way out of the question. So I ask you, people of the Klipsch forums, what should I look for in a sub for my computer? Also, this is really an area of audio that I have never looked into. If I need an amp or some other component so I can actually set up both and control them conveniently, please let me know, and possibly give some examples. Thank you. Edit: I realize I should let you know my budget. I initially wanted to spend the $150 on the Promedias, so I don't want to spend a lot more than that. I suppose $250 is the highest I'd want to go, but I am flexible. If I need to, I'll go with the AV 30s rather than the 40s.
  6. I'm noticing the same thing. I really hope they'll be back in stock on the website soon, because today I went to Best Buy and they have apparently stopped carrying them, as they couldn't find them in their computers and they have disappeared from the store. They also aren't on the Best Buy site. Amy Unger: Any idea when they'll be in? My old Logitech set died and I can't listen to these Harmon/Kardons any longer!
  7. Hey guys. I don't have my Promedias yet, but I know from a friend who does that they use speaker clips to hook up the satellites. Because of that, could I plug in other speakers (such as some of the smaller Klipsch bookshelves) and get satisfactory results? Or was this system made only to work with it's satellites? Thanks in advance.
  8. I hear everywhere about them improving sound quality, but what exactly do they do?
  9. Actually, a Buttkicker is a bass shaker. It plugs in like a regular sub and translates the nondirectional sounds into vibrations (well technically it should be "more vibrations"). I plan to get one as well as a sub. I wouldn't get two subs, I've had enough experience with subs to know that one will be enough, especially for this room. So, how could I plug two "subs" (being the actual sub and the buttkicker) into it without sacrificing performance? Or would that just not work? I'll definitely be looking around for Heresies now, though eBay seems to be my best bet since whenever I search Craigslist for Klipsch without specifying a model I usually only get a few speakers, and I've never seen Heritage models (yes, I've looked before). I'll look there anyway though. Thanks for all the help. And even though it isn't in my price range right now, exactly what does a preamp do? After all, they won't always be out of my price range.
  10. If I was after look rather than sound, I'd still be looking at Bose stuff. So what is the purpose of a preamp though? Does it just apply more power to the channels you run through it? If not, what does it do to add to the quality? Edit: And to ask another question, I read in a review that Heresies sound best with tube amps. What are those, and should I consider one if I get Heresys?
  11. If you search eBay you'll find plenty of lone subs for this system. Just make sure you don't accidentally get one made for the 4.1 or 5.1 systems, those systems were both flawed.
  12. In that case, I'll see if I can find some Heresys within my price range. EBay does look promising, I'll gather up some money and keep an eye on it. Quick question though, how can I tell which model of the Heresy I'm looking at? Most auctions just say "Heresy" without describing which. Thanks for all the help though, now a Heresy is much more likely to happen. And that amp does look pretty good, but I have one question, would there be some way I could use two subs on it without sacrificing performance? It's not actually for two subs, I just want to use a buttkicker as well as an eventual sub with it (thebuttkicker.com). One more thing though, you'll have to keep in mind that there are only one or two places around here that sell Klipsch, and they don't sell used. And since Klipsch doesn't seem extremely popular around my area (I'm basing this off the fact that every Bose display at every store that has them usually has a bunch of people crowding around it, or people stopping to admire "that killer sound system""), it's not likely that I'd find a lot of them used. I'll definitely be looking at what I can find on eBay though. Heresys look good, though naturally I'll be looking at other lines as well to see if I can get ahold of something for a really good deal. Edit: Also, what exactly is a preamp, and should I use one in the case of Heresys? I've read a few reviews in which they were used, so what does one do, how does it improve the sound, should I get one, and how much should I spend on one? Thanks.
  13. I actually still haven't picked an amplifier. What would you guys recommend? I'm looking for something versatile that has a lot of inputs (I'm gonna start by just plugging my computer into it, then I'll gradually add things such as a turntable and SACD player and maybe a Buttkicker if the amp allows), maybe something that can also power a second set of speakers (not necessarily in a surround setup though, unless there's one that lets me have two sets and a center that would let me toggle between using the two sets with the same input and surround) if I should ever need to do that. As for used stuff, I know a great place at a flea market that sells used equipment. They're indoors (it's just a smallish garage area, but that still keeps the sun off the equipment) and is in my experience (not a whole lot), not a bad place. I don't know if they let you test equipment before you buy it though. I haven't looked a whole lot at much other than vinyl there, though I don't remember a lot of stuff being very expensive. In fact, that's probably where I'm going to get a new record player to replace my current one since a Technics SL1200 is a little out of my reach. I'll also be looking at used speakers, though unless it's a brand I know and like (like Klipsch) or one I've heard a lot about and wanted to try but couldn't find any of (like Wharfedale) I'll probably be going with the RF-52s. And of course, if that indoor place doesn't let me try speakers before I buy them, then I just won't buy them. Even if it was from Klipsch I wouldn't buy the speakers if I couldn't test them first.
  14. I really like the layout of the room. Looks like a great place to enjoy music, which I'm sure won't be a hard thing to do.
  15. That's not on the top of my priorities list since I won't even start driver's ed until I'm 16.
  16. Well I doubt I'll be making more than minimum wage, I failed to mention that this will be my first job, and being 14, there aren't a lot of job options to begin with. I was looking at RF-52s as I'm sure that if I didn't make $600 by the end of the summer, I could make up the rest in allowance. If you haven't guessed though, this pretty much leaves Heritage speakers off my possibilities list (unless I can find a really nice deal somewhere, though that isn't likely since even if a store around here had some I wouldn't know because my mom doesn't like going to one audio store let alone several so I can see what I can find). Though for all I know I could run into something from Klipsch next time I go to the flea market, and this particular flea market is a great place to find really good deals on things. To be honest, floorstanders will likely be more than enough for my room. I figured I'd most likely get RF-52s because they seem like they'd work OK in my room without having the "these speakers are too big for this room" effect. That, and they typically have more bass, which I want. The reason for this is because in the future when I have a different room for these or a different setup, I don't want to have to get new speakers in the case of having bookshelves that are smaller than what I want speakers for. For example, if we were to move into a house with a bigger basement, they'd probably go down there for use with video games (right now I'm using an old Bose Lifestyle system, eep), or if we moved into a house where I'd have a bigger room, then my video games would probably go in that room along with the speakers, and if my room was big enough for my video game setup, it'd be nice to have more than bookshelves. Of course, when I'm actually shopping and have a chance to listen for myself I might end up getting bookshelves if they seem adequate or if I'm simply too far away from having enough for floorstanders. After all, everyone knows to shop for what sounds best to you. Those Synergy bookshelves really seem good though, if I have to go the way of the bookshelf I'll make sure I look at those first. If I like them whenever I get a chance to listen, I might get a pair sometime to replace the Bose system with. I want to put the RF-52s in my room (especially since my current video game setup would only allow for bookshelves, there simply isn't anywhere to put floorstanders where they wouldn't be in the wrong place for proper listening) and want to replace the Bose eventually, if I do I'll think of these bookshelves as a possibility. Thanks for all the help.
  17. So what makes it better then? And I'm aware of the awesomeness of Heritage, which I'm sure I'd be buying if I could make that kind of money.
  18. Could you explain that in either candy, soda, or preferably high end audio terms?
  19. Wait though, how do Synergy speakers sound different from Reference ones?
  20. So since I'm on the look out for a summer job, this means I'll be in the business for floorstanders soon enough. Since they'll most likely be from Klipsch, I want to know the difference between the Reference and Synergy lines. One thing I've noticed is that the References have slightly lower bass response, but what I'm looking for here is significant differences in how they sound. Is one better than the other, or is it a matter of what you like in a speaker? Oh, and excuse me if this is a stupid question.
  21. So today I went to see You Don't Mess With The Zohan (or at least half of it, due to a timing error) and noticed that in the background of a scene (where a character who's name I missed points out that the room contained many speakers) there appeared to be something Klipsch-ish. What really stood out was it's Klipsch-looking woofer and horn. I just searched the Klipsch site for something of it's nature (a short black speaker with a single silver woofer and square horn right above it) and found the F-1 floorstander, which seems to be the same thing. Did anyone else who saw it notice that?
  22. Has it happened repeatedly? If so, try selling it on eBay as a haunted item (that is, if you can come up with a good story for it) and make more money than it cost. Then get a new one.
  23. All I can think of for the rattling would be to inspect the sub for a loose sticker or something on it. My friend's old harmon/kardon speakers had that happen to the sub once, it turned out that the problem was a sticker on the bottom that was falling off. The bass made the sticker vibrate and tap against the desk/sub, so that caused the rattling sound. You might have a completely different problem, if you don't have a loose sticker or something like that, look at the area around the sub for something that would rattle during a bassy moment. Good luck.
