  1. To further bewilder me, last night I was messing around with the unit and lo and behold a "HDMI warning something or another" box appeared on the TV. It was vague, and there isn't a glossary in the AVR manual, so I'm not really sure what it wanted to tell me. But, It was a message from the AVR, and the important thing is that the signal is capable of being delivered to the toob. I am still uable to acess the OSD however. Crap.
  2. I don't have an S vid cable, but I'll obtain one and give that a shot as soon as my BAC moderates.
  3. Thanks for the info. I have been wondering about the sound ever since I read about it here several months ago. Please post more as you get to know the unit. OM
  4. Hokay, hier ist latest... I tried moving the slides fully left. No change. I tried starting the TV first, and then opening the source screen. I selected Component Two which is the Denon....no change. I tried unplugging all inputs to the Toob, with the exception of the MONITOR OUT yellow RCA to the toob. No change. Right now, I am self medicated and listening to the blues channel. I picked up a handy half of Henry McKenna, a handy half of Gordons Rot Gut Gin, and a 12 pack of Stella Artois for $11.99. Things are cool, but there is room for improvement. I have unplugged ALL the inputs to the TOOB except the VIDEO OUT from the Denon. I guess all the vid from the FIOS goes through the Denon, because its been playing on the TV for the last hour. Zuzu Bollin, look this dude up. Fantastic. I feel as though victory is on the horizon. However, the horizon is fuzzy. Giddyup.
  5. Thanks for all the help guys. Will fire up my laptop this eve, park right next to the unit with a frosty and and go through these suggestions one at a time. Steve
  6. The TV is a Samsung Plasma Series 4 450. It's about one year old. I currently have the RCA jack connected between MONITOR OUT on the Denon and the yellow VIDEO / AV IN input o the toob. On the back I have the following: 1) HDMI 1 and HDMI 2, HDMI 3 is on the side of the set. 2) Component in 1 and 2. Both identical EXCEPT Only component 1 in has a yellow input. It is colocated with the green, and is listed as "video" and AV IN 3) PC/DVI AUDIO IN - This is a 1/8" stereo pin jack 4) PC IN - This is a multi pin connector 5) AUDIO OUT - This is a 1/8" stereo pin jack 6) DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL) 7) EX LINK - This is a 1/8" stereo pin jack Thanks for the input.
  7. max2mc, you said... <<" One thing I would make certain is that your source selection is correct on the TV and it has not been programmed to switch or divert it to another. ">> I'm quite obtuse, so bear with me. When you say source selection... I hit the source button on my TV remote and get the various options for display. Is that what you mean? I don't see the AVR as an option. And just to verify, I have the RCA connected to video out on the Denon and to the only YELLOW video input on the back of my TV. It doesn't appear to me that I have any other option. I will keep at it.....
  8. I've tried the receiver reboot. It successfully zeros out the unit, but no luck with displaying the setup function. I have confirmed the cable from monitor out several times. Sometimes when I hit enter on the remote to beging the setup function, the receiver clicks, sometimes it does not. According to the Denon Tech, and the manual, hitting this will automatically bring up the setup menu on the TV. No luck with mine. Also according to the tech, I ought to be able to "see" the Denon receiver on my TV's "Source" page once I bring it up. My TV displays - AV, HDMI 1-2-3, PC, and Component 1 (which in this case is my FIOS box). I have checked each input and there is no receiver present. Thanks for the advice gentlemen. Any other ideas just toss em out! I'm stuck, and with the system default the front speakers are "small". Well, mine are huge, and I have no sub, so I am missing out on A LOT!! I have to wind the BASS knob to full to get any reasonable bass at all. With my 2 channel set up these speakers provide insane bass at 12 O'clock. So, I'm losing a prodigious amount of sound in this config. Will try to borrow a small TV with an RCA style video input.
  9. I picked up a very nice Denon AVR 3600 from the original owner for $150. http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/denon-avr-3600-av/1707-6466_7-30098282.htmlThis unit uses (it requires) the remote to display and modify the set up function for the HT on the TV....it will ONLY display it on the TV. Unfortunately, my Samsung Plasma will not display the set up menu. I called Denon this afternoon and a tech walked me through it, and helped troubleshoot the rig. We were able to run the DVD signal through the Monitor Out on the AVR as a way of troubleshooting that signal path. All was well. However, the menu still willnot show up on the toob. The Denon tech was very helpful, but we did not fix the problem. Needless to say, without proper setup I may as well have a piece of junk receiver as opposed to a (admittedly older) high end unit. FRUSTRATED, to say the least. Before this thing goes on Craigslist, do any of you have any additional suggestions?
  10. My TV sits directly on top of my academy center, and in between my CFs. There is approx one foot between the TV and the speakers. Is there any harm to the set being this close to the magnets? Inquiring minds want to know.
  11. Impossible to pick one...so I'll limit myself to five or so. In no particular order.... Steely Dan King of the World, My Old School, Bodhisattva, or..jump to Who's Next or The Fab T-Birds or... Little Feat Fat Man in the bathtub from the live album, Lonesome Whistle from Hoy Hoy Commodores Brick House Santana Everything is Coming Our Way, Hope your Feeling Better Ry Cooder The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor) has a killer bass line....turn it way up. Lucinda Williams Hot Blood, I Can't Let Go
  12. "[At] the Plaza...the attorney general, staying one floor above us, complained about me playing Little Feat records too loud last night...Band-wise, Little Feat is my favorite American group." -- Jimmy Page, interviewed by Cameron Crowe (1975). Mine too.
  13. " 'Rap', is short for crap" - Greg Allman.
  14. I picked one up on ebay for just a few bucks. The only issue with it is noise. Its just a bit too high powered (loud)....but it moves a prodigious amount of air. I have a Flame Linear and when cranking the tunes it can get a bit toasty. So, I only use the fan when I am blasting my tunes. Fortunately at lower volumes the fan isn't required. But what fun are lower volumes? Big speaks, big sound!
  15. Do those titanium disphragms come from Mr Crites?
  16. ITunes is what I have used on my last 3 machines, and it's what I am used to. But, I am not all that enamored with it. It has a difficult time with Classical Music for example, and tends to leave tunes in odd spots. I find this very frustrating. That being said, I travel for work and love the simplicity of the iPod. I use it in my car and on my boat. It's convenience is hard to overlook. If I am able to improve its sound quality then that will be a big plus as well. Thanks to all who offered info. Off to do some more reading.
  17. I've got a One TB external and a couple hundred CDs. I am planning on buying the Squeezeox Touch in the near future. I'd like to reburn all my discs to improve the quality / size of the files. When I burn on Itunes I have the "Streaming Buffer Size" set to "Large". Certainly there is a hell of al lot more to it than that, or is there? Any info on where to start would be appreciated. Thanks.
  18. As that kid said to Shoeless Joe...."Say it ain't so Joe! Say it ain't so!" Based on my personal experience with big corp America, I am unable to view this in a positve light. And if Audiovox is a multinational or a non US based company then it only deepens my concern. Surely they will find someone somewhere, who is willing to work for less and will make an inferior product. It will then be shipped to the US on foreign owned and crewed vessles (anybody remember the US Merchant Marine?? I didn't think so) and sold at a big box retailer or online. Who cares what it sounds like? Only a very small percentage of the population. One need only look at Boeing and the 787 to see what outsourcing will eventually do to a sophisticated and highly refined product. Have you ever seen anything with the name Audiovox on it that wasn't junk? I'm going to step up my drive to acquire higher end Klipsch gear while I still can, and spares for the stuff I already own. That's a bummer man!
  19. SSSSSSssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh! Don't let word get out, I'm not done buying yet
  20. It says, "General Questions" after all. I first noticed this phenomenon in my youth when I visited my squeezes domo. Her family had cats. Perhaps this is a good time to mention that I hate cats. OK....perhaps 'hate' is hyperbole, but I do indeed HATE cats that feel the need to soil their providers living quarters with testosterone propelled ejecta and have their way with the furnishings. WTF? I LOVE dogs, and I'd beat the hell out of Rover should he embark upon the same behavior. You may ask, "What the hell is this guy smoking?" (Romeo y Juliette Exhibition Number 3 to be exact). I purchased (OK, stole) a pair of CF3s a few years ago from a guy whose lady friend owned a cat, or cats. The exact tally of felines housed within the domo is unimportant (unless the threat of another same sex cat within said residence prompted the ejectorate in the first place, but that's another thread on a different forum). At any rate, one of more felines decided that soiling the speaker was an essential part of their existence and now I have to deal with the resultant stain. Let me tell you, cat piss is some weird stuff! It seems as though every 6 months it REAPPEARS like a bad case of herpes! I'd bet that NASA or the Defense Department could put this chemical to good use. Biannually I dutifully remove the grill from the speaker (fortunately only the starboard unit was micturated upon) and schlep it over to the kitchen sink. Once there I wash it off with a stream of warm water and dish soap. It always comes away from this ****** completely clean and in fine spirits. But, traces of it reappear just as sure as your starter wife will contact you for additional monetary support long after your court ordered stipend has been paid. The stain is like a crocus pushing through the late snow in March. I am flummoxed!
  21. When I brought my CFs home I was initially a bit disappointed with their sound. Turns out, it was 100% crappy HT receiver driven. When I gave up on the 300 page owners manual and dragged out some old vintage stuff, I had a smile from ear to ear. Methinks you'll find plenty of base and bass with those mothers.
