  1. I bought my son a 70's JVC DD turntable ($20) to replace his cheapo unit. It has a Shure M111he cartridge. Sucker rides very low and only garbled signal comes forth. I figure it must be shot. There's an NOS N111he replacement stylus on ebay right now sitting at $20. Should I? Or shouldn't I? If not, what?
  2. I spend far more time playing classical guitar than I do listening to recordings. And the more I play the less I listen...
  3. That was standard operating procedure for most American manufacturers, at least the quality ones, in that era. It took awhile for Drucker's quality revolution that had swept Japan to start making an impact on these shores.
  4. Daddy, as I said above, the guy is acutely strange. If a memebr here was seriously considering, I'd go over and have a look. Barring that, no way. Because I know, once he sees me he'll be dropping by the house from time to time with a handful of records clutched in his nervous little paws. and my wife would crap bricks to see him ringing the doorbell again. For you guys, sure. For info, no way. Besides he once talked me into a bad trade. I still miss that Paragon E and that pristine 8b. Sigh.
  5. If anybody needs me to I suppose I can go over and have a look/listen for you as I'm in Baton Rouge. I know Russell, having done a few trades with him a number of years ago. He's acutely strange but knowledgeable and harmless. He's not going to out and out rip anybody.
  6. Remind me never to write a mystery novel. Couldn't see the forest for the trees. It's on the tube complement sticker. But I got a better look at its guts. Su-perbly made in every way!
  7. Mark, where the heck is the serial number? I've got a forum member "axing" for the number 'n I can't find it. So far best I can find is JM100 REV F on the circuit board. Mystery, intrigue, cloak, dagger...
  8. NAD, to me, sounds slow, ponderous, wooly in the bass, bloated in the bass. Its sound with Khorns was awful. It was a 2200PE. Yuck.
  9. Bump. One more shot in this friendly zoo, then off to a'gon.
  10. Though Klipschorns may not be at their best in that particular room, I'd steel keep my eyes peeled for a pair. Once you have them, you'll be set for life. They won't always be in that room.
  11. Here it is again. Blueberry with about 20 hours, as new. $1000 Shoot me an email at enpyle@cox.net After this I guess I'll try audiogon.
  12. I think it was a more common finish in those days. I babysat some piano black lacquer Khorns for 2-3 years. One side wa a '55 and the other was, if I remember, a '57. The owner was obviously a cutting edge type, getting into stereo in its earliest nascent stage. Anyway, I love the look of that finish, depending of course on the surrounding decor.
  13. Thanks xman. I love the Lux, but it pales next to the BB. still, it'll be okay for me, and great for my wife. I confess i play much more than listen anyway (classical guitar). I've noticed that when I play, the sound seems so real The one SS I had in my system that really sounded special was an NEC integrated. A big heavy job, I think it was called A11. But it wasn't built like Lux & it crapped out & was declared unrepairable. grrrr.
  14. I have 3 phase power. The original owner got it run somehow back in the 50's. Duke, even though it could be considered commercial power, my bill is residential class, so I'm not buggered with the usage fee. I have a commercial 3 phase A/C. It's delightfully stingy with electric.
  15. My wife's comfort (see previous thread on her hearing disorder) has won out and I'm going to return to the very quiet Lux integrated. I'll especially miss the glories of the BB's wonderful phono section. Man. I'm just lucky to keep my KHorns. -Blueberry, current incarnation. Less than 20 hrs. $1000 -Teac AL-P700 $60 -Kennedy EL34 amp, 20wpc., $400 email me at enpyle@cox.net
  16. You are so right, Larry. Thanks for the link you gave above. This deserves more study.
  17. ---------------- On 8/2/2005 11:52:37 AM mdeneen wrote: "The item is "items". Sounds very severe. mdeneen ---------------- I hear what she's hearing, though to me it is very quiet & unobtrusive. she does have a severe problem. She's coping remarkably well, considering this strong ringing is going on in her head around the clock. If she ever comes at me with a kitchen knife, I'll know she's having a bit of difficulty coping...
  18. The item is "items". Just the amp idling without a preamp is enough to set her off. The tube amp is marginally noisier than the Teac, but only marginally. Same with the BB. It adds only the finest layer of hiss, independent of the volume control. The only place there's any extra noise is in the phono circuit. Again, it's very quiet and its additions are small. I dunno. I may have to go back to Lux integrated until I decide what to do. I'm wonering if there's some elaborate switching system that accomodate both. But the more I think about it, the more I know I can't. In the end I'll accomodate my wife. She makes sweet music, very natural, with great imaging and realism. In my household, I'm the one who can hear the 19k carrier. Even when walking by a house with a TV on inside.
  19. My wife has fairly strong tinnitus (ringing of the ears), a condition which can literally drive you nuts. The only treatment is counseling & therapies to train your mind to live with it without jumping off a bridge somewhere. Anyway, it makes her a bit deaf in some frequencies and completely intolerant in others. Which brings me to me dilemma. My recent return to tubes has introduced thermionic noise into my system that is driving her looney. I know, when the music is playing, no problem. But the idle times, between tunes, etc. drives her immediately & violently out of the room. Sigh.
  20. May be true of Audio R. overall, but not with the Classic series. I'd like a Classic 60. The 120 gets me vote. Any trouble with the mighty 12? Do you realize the former Paragon designer resides here on this very board? His new line of preamps are sweeeeeeeeet.
  21. I'm not a nuanced audiophile, but the phono section of the Blueberry, to my ears, is astoundingly good. i had no idea it could be this good. Very highly recommended.
  22. I had an NAD PE2200 (very powerful) on loan during a repair job powering my KHorns. The sound was so wooly and slow it freaked me out. It was like an overdone caricature of an old magnavox tube console hi-fi. I imagine they do better stuff, but that piece scared me away. Whassamatta with 70's Luxman receivers & integrateds?
  23. You'll have no trouble with the bass overwhelming the room. There's more danger of that with the Cornwalls. Because the K-horns' norn-loaded bass deliver such quick and accurate bass, there is no bloat. Many listeners interpret them as bass shy as a result. Until they cue up something with substantial & sustained bass content. Then look out! Nothing can deliver as much so clearly. That said, I'm thinking the room is a tad shy for Khorns.
  24. So, 3Dzapper/rick, do you play that classical guitar that's sitting there? If so, what's your "poison"?
