  1. Looking to get rid of a pair of AA crossover I pulled out of Khorns a few years ago. $100, buyer pays shipping. Will send pics for serious buyers.

  2. My wife finally accepted the Khorns I brought home and put in the living room. I got mine at such a good price, I pretty much put my foot down and just brought them home. But she really appreciates having a speaker that is out of the way, in the corner and also provides a prominent display area for books, pictures and other trinkets atop the Khorn.

Probably going to get them re-veneered this winter. She will surely sign off on that purchase as it is sort of like interior decorating.

  3. I saw a pair on craigs for 300 the other day locally. The dust cap on the woofer was mashed in but probably still 7 out of 10 overall condition.

I think 425 is way too high. I think 250-300 no matter how nice they are.

  4. I have been on the wagon for a solid 18 months now (wagon being, for the most part content with both my 2 ch and HT set up and not spending any money on more gear)

The last thing I got was a Audio Technica LP120 (entry level TT) to replace my failing Thorens MK126III that needs a new motor.

I am starting to itch for some upgrades tho... help me figure out what to work on over the winter.

    - Marantz 8801 to replace my aging Denon 3808? Always wanted a completely separate processor. 11 channels might be cool and it is half way affordable now, though it would probably lead to more amps / speakers too.

    - Khorn upgrades. Need new veneer. Any thoughts on Volti Audio upgrades?

    - Amps - Still thinking about a separate for the living room. Tube or a high end SS? I am this close to pulling the trigger on a decent tube... then I always remember, I listen to too much rock music and back away.

    - 4 Marty subs to accompany my 4 sealed? This actually sounds like the most fun...

  5. I like how fast the oppo is to load and how quite it is. My PS3 sounded like a helicopter on the tarmac and it overheated all the time. Of course, I had the gen I with extra USB ports and SACD support.

  6. "I give (general manager) Ray Farmer and (head coach) Mike Pettine a lot of credit. There's hope for the city of Cleveland. Johnny Manziel is going to bring his electrification to the city of Cleveland."

    LOL

Notable incidents include his early departure from the Manning Passing Academy after allegedly oversleeping,[91] tweeting that he "can't wait to leave College Station" after receiving a parking ticket,[92] and getting kicked out of a University of Texas fraternity party.

Wait a minute... kicked out? Of a frat party? He must be a ******.

  7. Have you thought about a projector?

Good Epson or BenQ 1080p projectors and screens can be had for less than the same 65" TV. I upgraded at Christmas and haven't had my plasma turned on in months. It even looks pretty sharp in the day time with weak ambient light in the room. Also, you don't have to pay for all the 'smart' bs the is sold with all new TV's.

  8. Value is for sure a huge part of the equation.

    A used PB13 SVS / JL F113 - or - 4 18": subs?

There really isn't a comparison performance or value wise. DIY 18's will take a system 'beyond thunderdome'.

  9. I have been talking with derrick about EQ'ing my subs for the past couple weeks and am starting to study up on the topic of room modes, peaks / nulls, room treatments and EQ.

This is an interesting take on Audyssey. http://realtraps.com/art_audyssey.htm

Granted, it is from a website selling room treatments however the arguments make perfect sense. I personally have never noticed a night / day improvement by running Audyssey on my systems. There is a very modest improvement in sound quality, timing and channel separation, but I don't think it is everything it is cracked up to be.

  10. CL drives me nuts most times. I would rather buy than sell there. Everyone wants 'deal of the century' and seem to think they can rook you everytime. List something reasonably priced for $500 and watch the offers roll in for $250 all day long.

The worst is when you agree on a price and the person shows up light intentionally to try and knock you down. I was selling some silver bullion once for like 5% over spot. I had a ton of response and sold out in just a few days as my price was just slightly cheaper than anything on the web. This one guy wanted to buy a bunch of it, like a couple grand worth. Price was set. Went to meet him, he pulls out $500 and says "take it or leave it". I just laughed in his face and drove off. Now, I won't drive out of my way to meet anyone off craigs to sell.

  11. No worries. I have some rare free time tonight. I might pull the 2226b apart and check out the antenna. Actually, I am even a little hesitant to try and sell stuff on here. I would feel awful if I missed something or for any reason anyone wasn't happy with what they bought.

As far as Robert Bowdish and irebuildmarantz is concerned, I believe he got into some serious trouble with medical bankruptcy with either himself or his wife. He got way behind, started charging extra to make up some revenue, after he had burned through deposits on hand and wasn't keeping pace that lead to everyone on AK hating him. The new guy Randy, that bought the whole operation from Robert is still digging out and trying to get the business back on track:

"The $100-cut-ahead-of-people-that-paid-deposits-more-than-4-years-ago did more to piss people off than any other single thing Robert did, and I ended that the day I took ownership. It was the turning point when he went from doing bad business practices to outright fraud and deception. And I no longer take deposits, and I've refunded over $10lk in deposits he took and spent to live on. And I've shipped back over a dozen units (at my expense) that he had people ship so he could get more deposit money with no realistic expectation of getting the work done soon."

Obviously, I don't agree with how Robert handled his business, but I can say that I understand. When it comes to bankruptcy, medical bills and stuff like that, I can empathize with that kind of pressure and see how someone could start making some poor decisions. In any case, I had my unit fully turned around in about 90 days. I don't know why it worked out like it did, but I was (am still) happy with his work. The new owner seems top notch after talking to him for a bit. I bet irebuildmarantz will be around for a long time.

I also really appreciate guys like Dean, Bob and other in vintage, niche market restoration / modifications. They allow me to enjoy this hobby without having to take the time to learn basic electrical engineering and soldering. The local Mcintosh tech here in Alaska? He wants $95 per hour to work on Marantz receivers, and that is just getting them back to spec, no LED upgrades, no preventative cap change outs, no guarantees, no nothing. The guy that just did my 2270 spent probably 40 hours total and only charged me $300 parts and labor. And all that in a market where Randy at irebuildmarantz and Tom on AK both have 48 month backlogs AND turn away 2-3 customers per day for new orders. It is a bargain at twice the price if you ask me. In my opinion, these guys could probably triple their prices and still have jobs lined up and down the runway.

  12. Just to be clear, there is nothing on this unit that 'needs' to be repaired. Everything works just fine. I haven't had any issues with the dial sticking in almost a year and even when it did it, it was very infrequent.

Obviously, being 30+ years old and completely re-capped it is not new in box. Cheers if you can find one that is or find someone that can make it so.

Also, if anyone else is interested, I found another tech in Prescott AZ that does fantastic work restoring these things. He just redid my 2270 and it turned out completely awesome for a very good price, sends pictures throughout the build and keeps you up to date with exactly what he is working on. With the new guy that bought irebuildmarantz and Tom over at AK both not accepting new units and carrying a 48 month backlog, good techs are in high demand.

PM me if you want more details... and buy my 2226b!

  13. 3 sets of AA networks that came out of 1976 Khorns and a Belle.

Not really sure what they are worth. I saw a pair on Ebay that went for ~130 a while back, so make an offer. Would be willing to entertain trades, maybe for one used Super AA, Super X or ALK?

  14. Time to shed some gear.

I have a very nice Marantz 2226b up for sale. It was completely gone through by Robert Bowdish at irebuildmarantz in Jan of 2012. All caps, pots, LED upgrade and tuning were done. Despite what anyone has read about Robert and irebuildmarantz, I have nothing but positive things to say about his work and business.

Full disclosure: I think it has an aftermarket woodcase that isn't quite as robust /nice as some of the other ones I have seen. Still, it gets lots of compliments in our living room. One of the vents on the side is a little loose, but could probably be fixed with glue.

The tuner antenna / handle looking thing on the back is a little loose and wiggles a little bit. Might just be a loose screw on the inside, but it really isn't important so I haven't tried to mess with it.

After I first got it back, the dial would slip a little bit and not turn left when trying to tune in stations on occasion. I would have to pull off the faceplate and move the needle by hand to get it to start moving again (30 second task). Over the past 18 months of pretty consistent use, this has happened less and less and it hasn't been an issue at all for the past 10 months but, full disclosure.

Other than that, this receiver puts out great sound through all channels. All features work without issue. It has a nice warm phono preamp and the tuner is exceptionally clear. All tone controls work flawlessly.

I have over $600 into it for shipping and repairs and am letting it go for $400 + shipping obo. I will forward the invoice for repairs to whoever buys it.
