  1. I'm trying to sell some of my organs in order to buy this stuff. Anyone's looking for a kidney?

There's no real reason not to turn it off during the night. My HF-81 sounded great within an hour. Has it been rebuilt?

Been listening mostly to CDs thru a classic Rega Planet and the Cornwalls. Sounding real good. C&S ---------------- How long has it been running?
  4. I recommend that you explore this site http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/ and read the shootout section, a lot of useful info there. IMO, there's no need to spend $2k when there are many excellent tuners like the Sansui TU-919, Audiolab 8000A etc that go well below $1k.

If niether one of you owns a truck go rent one. I still bet it would be cheaper than shipping and safer on the abbys as well. Yall need to make a deal and meet somewhere. Don't let such a short distance stop a deal. Talk to Colterphoto and IndyKlipschfan about travaling to get speakers. Steve ---------------- Steve, you're right but unfortunately I don't have a car/truck/us drivers license and my international driver's license expired about a month ago so renting is not an option either.
  6. I think that he got one of these or these
  7. Let me know if you change your mind and decide to ship, I'm in NYC.
  8. Any chance you'll start collecting MC240's in the near future?

I would like to get some tube amps eventually to at least run my Khorns. Not sure if 30W will be enough but it seems to me that tube amps sound more potent to comparably rated SS amplifiers. They will most likely be out of my price range though.---------------- It's gonna be an impossible task. Joe Auwen has already layed his eyes on these . Good luck with the auction, though.
  10. I'm not sure that the 299C would sound much better than the HK430. I'd either save a little more and buy seperates or get that turntable.
  11. I read Mark's posts and find it difficult to understand why he acts against his belief and use all these hyped, fancy and expensive Auricaps and Hovland capacitors instead of the good old Orange drops...... If the circuit is good who needs these expensive parts?
  12. Larry, Would you like to try a different preamp?
  13. Larry, Which crossovers have you got in the Khorns? If AA's, have you removed the diodes?
  14. Thanks Larry. I'm sure that there are many cheaper options that would probably sound as good. Anyway, if you're in the market for high priced cables, I've got a friend who's an ex-dealer for NBS cables and he's selling his remaining inventory for 75% off (25% of retail). If you might be intereted, I'm certain that I'd be able to find you something nice there.

PWK didn't design Khorns for exotic wires. ---------------- How much does the Basis wire cost (if I may ask)?
  16. I tend to agree with Max here. I've had the same result running a pair of Goertz silver speaker cables with my Khorns. I've owned a Wadia 861 for a while and it too tend to sound lean in many systems. I'd try some copper or carbon speaker wires first before making drastic changes.

My CAT has a lovely mid range, but I've become more aware that it's weak in bass and highs. Gary's BB Xtreme, which isn't even broken in yet, is way superior in some respects. Looks like I'm going on a preamp search! Larry ---------------- IMO, It might be a mismatch with your amp. I've had the CAT in my system and it sounded breathtaking. The extention and dynamics were amazing. I'm using cone speakers with ribbon tweeters so it might be a different story.

According to a review I read in some magazine on the 901 it, like all other shelters, should be run into 47 Kohms. This alerted me when I read it and then I dug up the specs attached which seemed, to me, to confirm his findings. When I started to run the cartridge with 47 Kohms I thought the sound was better than with 100 ohms - not enormously - but noticable. How do you tell? I am fairly sure that tonally the system is pretty much spot on - a visit by a musicologist (no - I am not sure what they do either - but they all have perfect pitch) confirmed to me that my sound was as close to reality as she had ever heard. That was with the cart on the 47 KOhm setting. I would suspect that if the setting was wrong the tone would be off - wrong? ---------------- I've played with differnt loading values many times and there are no exact rules. It might be that the recommended 100 ohm load doesn't match the basic character of your system. Does it sound to dark and warm with 100 ohm load? I'd try a different load like 1Kohm and see how it affects the sound. IMO, using a 47k load with a 100 ohm cartridge, can increase the clarity in the mid and highs but affects the balance of tone. You "suposedly" get more details but you do lose some of the musics body and base weight. In my previous system, I was using a Denon 103Gold (recommended load was >100 ohm) the system sounded too warm with a 100 ohm load and too bright with 47K. I settled with 1K which gave me the best balance.

  20. My guess is that they meant that you need to connect either a 20 ohm step up transformer (passive) or a 100 ohm head amp (active) into a 47K MM input. Especially since the DC resistance of the coils is only 14 ohms. I really find it hard to believe that 47K is recommended by them. I've seen far to many manuals that were poorly translated from Japanese to English but I might be wrong this time.

I ran my Shelter 901 with 100 ohms impedance for 18 months before I discovered it should be run on the 47Kohm setting. Wasn't a night and day difference - just enough to make the cartridge worth its price. At least you found your problem within a few days.... ---------------- Max, According to Shelter's technical data, you do need to load the Shelter with a 100 ohm instead of 47K. TECHNICAL DATA Output Voltage - 0.5mV Elliptical Stylus Tracking Force 1.4-2g DCR - 14 ohm Weight - 9.1 g Recommended Load Impedance: Transformer - 20ohm Head Amp - 100 ohm
