l was just given a Teac Reel to Reel GX-220D. Hooked it up and it plays but sounds very muddy. Anyone here have any knowledge about these things, as is it worth restoring, how do you clean the heads, etc.? I know this is a Klipsch forum but I've seen plenty of technical questions about products other than Klipsch.

I got these from Dave and they sound awesome in my Cornwalls! Excellent craftsmanship!!

i may, what are you looking for? Gary Gary, I'm looking for for some single tubes for my preamp. I need something that is extremely quiet, and I'm wanting to get that warm, tubey vintage sound. I'm running a Tung-sol in the center position, with Groove Tubes on the left/right (3 tube preamp with 6x4 rectifier tube). I've tried new EH tubes and a Sovtek 12AX7LPS, and I'm not liking either. I'm thinking I need to go vintage. Any suggestions? pm sent

I have Tercel / Jolida > Peach > VRD stereo version > Belles i'll be glad to help you, i have been told by many to change the 2AX7 in the Jolida CD player to a 12AT7 or 5751. Sweetened the sound for me and took off any harsh edginess to the tone, i may have a couple 12AT7s if you want to try but out of 5751s, i'm retired military also...

from what i've been told preamp tube changes will make the biggest sonic change...hope this helps

thats a killer amp!! i thought it used 12AX7s....did you put the 12AT7 in it to tame the beast and if so how did it work? i do a similar thing with my '59 Fender Bassman by replacing all 3 12AX7s with 12AY7s. good luck!!!

As a former professional musician we always had jokes about drummers, bass players, singers etc. I've never met a musician who didn't have a sense of humor. I told my neighbor about you as she is from Oakland and went to the Oberlin Conservatory and plays viola. You 2 probably know each other. This is a very good point! I also agree with the comment about Joe's Tube Lore....he hates 12AX7s!!! Remember to factor in gear synergy into the quotient which as mentioned by Audio Nectar is noteworthy.

Telefunkens are awesome, especially in vintage gear, they seem to help tighten up the sound ...personally I love Amperex Bugle Boys signal tubes from the mid to late 50's... i had the KT-88 Gold Lions in another amp and think they come pretty close if not beating the vintage Genalex KT88's... Most audiophiles agree that the Tung Sol 6550 Black Plates are the best, but the Gold Lions are a very budget friendly tube that will get you pretty close...although i got my last quad of Tung Sols for $50 each so there are buys to be found in used NOS tubes despite what some claim, you just need to find a reputable, knowledgeable source...i recently picked up 2 Telefunkens for a friend, they tested practically new...they were labeled Dynaco but were made by Telefunken as testified by the diamond logo on the bottom...thats how to get the nicer tubes cheap is to know which tubes are labeled for one company but were actually made by the major companies of the time, Eico and IEC made by Mullard; Adzam, Pope, Philips Miniwatt by Amperex, Dupont by Tung Sol are just a few more examples...2 Dynacos- $40 whereas the same tube with a Telefunken label is 2 for approximately $150.....same tube

.......higher screen voltage does not make a tube sound better, the 6550 tube was specifically designed for audio purposes, the KT88 was not...

are the Mullards you are speaking the long black plates or the short gray plates?...I totally concur with your Telefunken description...awesome tube, I always think the best description of the Amperex Bugle Boys is a hybrid of the best qualities of the Telefunken ribbed plates and the Mullard long black plates which gives the best of both worlds, they also have a 3D hollographic sound unheard with any other tube...

If I decide to say with cane I'll probably go with the Marshall Style Cane Grill Cloth 58'' W. But, considering my Cornwalls are far from stock considering all the upgrades (tweeter, mid horn and croossovers) I've actually looked at the Vox Diamond Style (both are nice). This site has some really nice clothe to pick from which is why I haven't finalized my decision. I won't be selling them so I'm leaning towards what I think will look best, not what is a close match to what is a close stock replacement. What do you think of the Vox and if so which do you like most.. I 'm a musician and always liked the old grille clothe from the Marshalls, Fenders and Vox amps. I found this site to find clothe for an old '59 Fender I'm redoing and saw how nice their clothe would look on Klipsch. Good luck and let me know how it works out. I may ask for a small sample. I actually did a quick fix by covering with burlap I got at a fabric store and it looks awesome and cost was $5 for 2 speakers, but final will be one of the above. Could you post a photo of the sample you have?
