  1. i disconnected the fans and it does boot. but after about a minute of running the server shutdown due to thermal limit triggers. comes with the territory of using enterprise hardware for home use. I think i'll just grit through it for now and re-locate to my garage office once I have it up and running.
  2. could be the parallax reflective dome that's inside each of the magnets. i only say that because of your side-tipping experiments. I've seen (heard) similar instances where someone went and welded the parallax dome to the core suction rod and it fixed the issue. might be worth a try.
  3. i'm still waiting for my father in-law to clear all of his HAM gear out of my garage office. but the worst case scenario is that I relocate this particular server out to that room and just run it over gigabit connections to the house.
  4. so here's a sample of what's in there, and if i recall correctly there are 4 of these modules - a total of 8 little fans. http://www.impactcomputers.com/mc545.html#
  5. not yet. the potential problem, though, is that because this is a proper 1U rackmount server and it is from Dell those fans are potentially wired in with specific sensors and such as part of the cooling management system. Dell is notorious for embedding OEM crap like that. i'll dig around and provide my findings.
  6. indeed. I'm going to have to figure out how to cool/sound proof my closet or move the server to another room. Those fans are pretty noisy and it sounds like i have a hair dryer constantly running in the closet. :/
  7. slight hiccup. I traded my old NAS enclosure for 4TB (2x 2TB) of storage via craigslist. Did some research, and while they are usable with unraid, it takes a bunch of effort. So these two drives are now in my media front end with a fresh install of windows 7 and all of my various media delivery apps. Copying all of my data locally and will begin the process of building my unraid box over the next few months. in the meantime, i have 3.5TB of usable storage space, albeit unprotected from drive failure. I'm not too worried about it, since this is not my long term solution.
  8. Getting all of my hardware together today; I'm excited to get this project rolling into reality
  9. its the middle of the afternoon on a Friday. Give folks more than an hour to chime in and help out...
  10. worst case, ping lilmike over on AVS Forum and see if he can help out some.
  11. Great to hear Rudy - glad this solution is going to work out for your needs as well.
  12. i took my wife up on that offer once ..i've never regretted that decision.
  13. sweet! i'll be getting a couple of 2tb drives this weekend and will then begin the setup/preclear process.
  14. nope, you're wrong. Richard Skull of Audiofanatics magazine performed a triple blind test using 8,000kbps FLAC files mounted through a granite based power coupled 8,312W amps. And EVERY time the subjects picked the Klipsch RF-5's against the K-horns. Can't argue science, dood.
  15. There's a drive in up here close to Dallas that has both FM transmitters and all refurbished/working car window speakers. It's a pretty good time and they show double features - cheap tickets, and they of course bend you over with concession prices. http://www.galaxydriveintheatre.com/
  16. cool, thanks for chiming in - glad to hear of successful usage for such a long time. I've used subsonic in the past and it's definitely on my list for re-install on this new media front end server I'm putting together.
  17. Very peaceful these days and generally quite civil. That is good. However, I must say there are times when I miss the "wild west" days of years ago. Not a lot, mind you, but I miss them... Dave klipsch reference is VASTLY superior to that old klipsch heritage crap. oh, and tubes suck.
  18. Their threads are typically allowed to survive for just a little bit. It gives us a sarcasm/******* pressure valve so we don't turn on each other.
  19. makes sense! yes, do your mega-transfer first. While the parity drive makes everything safer, it also makes the system slower. The cache drive is supposed to help speed things up, both both drives should be added after your initial data dump so that you're only dealing with incremental data additions thereafter.
