  1. oh ya, that's really me. and the beard has gotten longer since I snapped that. I started growing a beard when i found out wife was pregnant (sort of like playoff beards) last june and haven't trimmed since. I'm sure i'll clean it up a little after birth, but 've gotten quite attached to the thing and plan on keeping it long term.
  2. no sarcasm - why not return it and get the bdp-95? It has upgraded internals on the analog side with the best DAC available and is otherwise the same as the bdp-93 in functionality. It's $500 more than the bdp-93 and then you don't have to mess with anything internally.
  3. OMG OMG OMG OMG, MAYBE NEXT TIME YOU'LL BE MORE CAREFUL WHEN MOVING YOUR ELECTRONICS. (but, like mentioned above - remove the terminal cup and see what you can find, should be an easy enough fix)
  4. it's already sitting on thick heavy rubber feet. the issue is the sheer level of output from the sub and it's proximity to my component rack. I'm going to finally get some pictures taken tonight and start my own thread so that people can stop trying to visualize my setup (that's my own fault) and see what I'm working with.
  5. There are TONS of options out there, but i'm not looking for the snooty micro-subsonic isolaters meant to prevent vibrations from a human breath. I think my new sub is causing my blu-ray player to skip. i'm getting weird handshake/garbled signal issues in movies such as Tron: Legacy or other bass heavy movies, only when playing via disc, and only during deep bass scenes. Have checked to make sure discs are clean, cables connected, etc. The only thing i can come up with is that either the player is vibrating in my component rack or the disc/tray are vibrating. so what are some suggestions for serious vibration isolation and not just fancy looking expensive inverted solid gold cones?
  6. Tron: Legacy, 300, Sucker Punch, Dark Knight, Book of Eli, Michael Jackson catalogue, The Goat Rodeo Sessions, various techno/eletronic tracks, various 90's rap, Pink Floyd - DSOTM. All things I watched or listened to this weekend with a new found joy.
  7. OH, and i forgot to mention the white glove service: component buying advice with countless answers to my questions, smoked boudin for lunch, a chance to enjoy the company of his family, system demos, after purchase setup and advice .. and so on. Try and get THAT from your 22 yr old magnolia guy.
  8. even though it's MDF, i can't stress how well Carl made this turn out and his attention to detail. After a week of testing there are no rattles, no loose bits, no air leaks, and he finished everything to the point of literally only needing paint. if Carl ever offers to build you a speaker, say YES and worry about the size/use/placement later.
  9. Thanks Greg, I will surely be taking you up on your offer. I'm having my first kid some time in the next couple weeks, so lets plan to synch up some time after April/May. Maybe we can even turn it into a little clinic if other DFW'ers want to come out and learn some things about measuring and tweaking.
  10. So far, I love it. Pretty stupid easy to use. I have my gear mounted in a 42u cabinet, so I built a shelf out of mdf and mounted this horizontally with 25ft -/+ leads going to the sub. I picked this one primarily because of the adjustable high pass filter, but the extra 200w of headroom is nice, should I ever need it. I've yet to crank the gain past 50% and the amp's heat sink has never gotten so hot that I can't touch it. Great build quality from Oaudio and not that much more xpensive than the plain Jane bash amps from parts express. And they ship out of Austin, so I got my amp up here in north TX literally overnight.
  11. shrug, just makes me not want to post the project there because of the hassle related to getting pertinent information included without being able to just link to the full resources. i'm sure they have their valid reasons, but it seems to be disconnected from what the internet truly is and how it is used.
  12. yet neither of those competing sites have the same policy. nor do any of my gun forums, photography forums, or scuba forums.
  13. I came across the Home Theater Shack forum as I work to tame and fully use my new DIY sub. Tons of great resources there, including REW. So i figure i would start a quick thread to talk about my sub and share the project, cuz you know, it's the internet and information transfer is key. I linked to Carl's build thread here and the original thread on AVSF and after about an hour got a PM from a forum moderator that my message would be deleted because I violated a part of their TOS which forbids linking to competing forums. seriously? how am i supposed to post about the project and not point people to crucial threads on a couple of other forums that have very useful information, both of which are far too lenghty for me to try and recreate on a separate forum? just struck me as weird that they would have such a closed system mentality.
  14. put my vote down for Magnepan, love you guys!
  15. ok, so.. re-arranged furniture to be more aesthetically pleasing, while also giving me a spot to sit in what i found to be the "best" from which i have to choose. re-ran audyssey, but with the sub gain down to about "2" - this provided me with appropriate trim levels for all speakers, including a sub trim of -2.5. the best i was getting before was -7 to -12. all speakers manually switched to small and crossover set to 80hz. on the plate amp: phase is at zero crossover disabled PEQ disabled Popped in Tron Legacy, turned up the sub gain to just after the 1/4 mark. Bass is loud and deep, punches me in the chest. LFE sounds as if it is coming from all of the other speakers, not the sub itself - that melting into the system effect. Slight boominess, but nothing compared to what i have been noticing in the past.really nice and clear sound from the speakers; they don't sound covered up by the LFE. so, minor victories and i think i am in good shape for the next little while as I gather up some basic measurement tools and start to look at room treatments. thanks again for the various inputs and ideas.
  16. Re: Economic Survey - what's your observations? Age: 30, wife age: 28. She's a RN and i'm in datacenter/manged services sales, so we've remained quite insulated. People don't stop getting sick, and as money gets tight companies look to outsourcing partners for their IT infrastructure as a means of reducing capex. Quite a few of our friends have struggled these past few years and it's been a very odd balance between being supportive and sensitive while having to explain why we're not in the same situation. we do what we can, when we can, but it's never enough. any of this could change at any moment, mind you... so we enjoy what we can each day at a time.
  17. i do indeed. i guess i didn't realize how advanced/superior that version of Audyssey was when compared to previous versions or other EQ options. i do go back each time and set my mains to small and the crossover to 80hz (audyssey crosses over my mains at 60hz, so i can raise without issue). i need you guys to hash out your opinions on the sub amp's PEQ and provide some further insight. I don't know enough on the subject to make an informed decision based soley on "yes, do" or "no, don't". I trust that this discussion can happen without hurt feelings or ideological warfare. i'll start digging more into room anomolies and fixes. thanks for the tech support guys!
  18. i think this is the route i'll go with for now. I've got some flexibility in where i place the furniture - much less flexibility in the speakers and tv. I've got a very narrow space for actual sweet spots if i am to have any sort of toe-in for imaging and right in the middle, about 2ft off the back wall the sound is the best I've heard out of all places in the room. so i'll move around some seating and look into some basic PEQ tweaks I can make. I think my best bet in the long term will be something like a behringer BFD or miniDSP and REW. i've got Morgan interested in some aesthetically pleasing acoustic panels - bass traps may not be as feasible. taking my own advice - every person's home setup has compromises of some sort, and mine will be no different.
  19. moved the sub against both walls in the corner and so far don't hear any negatives. I did, however, uncover one of my issues around some of the bass issues. Instead of a couch, I have two arm chairs in the main watching are, and so I've been making my listening positition measurements in the middle of those two, basically a straight line from the center speaker. however, when testing music and movies i sit in one of the chairs, which are left and right of the measurement spot. there i hear boominess and the sub is very distinct, rather than melting into the system. it was VERY apparent when listening to music. so i moved one of the chairs into the measuring position and the sub melted away and sounds less boomy. i know there's some more tweaking to do with the PEQ and such, but some of my issues may very well be related to where i place my butt to watch/listen. so do i calibrate for that one good spot, or try to make it sound most pleasing for multiple spots?
  20. very true. i never truly expected it to be "drop-in" easy, and in spite of my whining i do like the new research and tools i need to get. i'm just glad it doesn't sound horrible even in it's current state. more like "unrefined". what/where is this speechless formula?
  21. you mean i have to do MORE work? now that i have the sub i can start researching this stuff and applying it - before it was all just very conceptual. i will definitely be calling you at some point

  23. i take it back..some quick searching shows that my audyssey mic might in fact be perfectly suitable for LFE measurements and I might be able to use my laptop's soundcard. it won't be tack sharp accurate, but it'll be far better than nothing at all. i'll play around with it tonight and see what i can come up with. the joys of owning a big boy sub.
