  6. I really shouldn't call it loud but when there is no music playing I can definitely tell it's there. I also noticed that the more I turn the loudness up the less hiss there is. Turned all the way up it doesn't totally go away but at the volume levels I usually have it at it seems a bit too much "loudness" anayway. BOA!- Tell me if I'm wrong about this. As I understand it the Fletcher and Munson curve is loudness at a set level that decreases as the volume is increased without touching the loudness control knob. Am I anywhere close? 8. THE NEW PHONE BOOKS ARE HERE!! THE NEW PHONE BOOKS ARE HERE!! Well....those too but the Mac came today also. It fit right where it (had) to. The guy I dealt with at Audio Classics is Stephen Rowell. It really suprised me that it came with the original box, the panlock wall mount brackets and the original manual. UPS crunched one corner; I could tell because the packing tape that AC put on it was torn with the rounded corner. The first thing I did discover was that the loudness control puts a nasty rumbling hiss through the tweeters. I turned that off and just raised the bass on the eq a bit. So much for getting that declining curve with increasing the volume. With it off, however, the system is dead silent (YEA!!). I was in a hurry to get a picture posted so please excuse the sorry lookin' pic. 9. Jim, There's a few different places you can get this. Although I don't think the same stylus is available anymore. The closest thing would be a V15 Type VxMR for about $275. 11. Boa, Sumpin' tells me you got an SL-1200 mkII. Those things a real tanks. If memory serves those will get up to speed in 1/4 of a turn of the platter! When I was in Audio retail about 20 years ago a co-worker claimed he had the "Ultimate" system. Yea, that's all opinion. Anyway he did tell me of a Pioneer turntable that you could lift the whole unit by it's tonearm! You could also put the table on the floor, stand on the platter and it would still get up to speed as (as long as you didn't loose your lunch!). ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 (McIntosh C33 is coming!!) 12. Jim, Just remember, for every 3db of boosted signal you put into your tweeters you doubling the power input. Frightening but true. Sorry I can't help ya with the turntable. I have a "vintage" Yamaha PF-800 belt drive that sounds wounderfull. It's a traditional tone arm configuration with a distinct feature. The tonearm is actually two seperate pipes to/from the headshell. They seperated left and right channels so to keep the intermodulation of channels down to a minimum. If you want to look for something fun, a long time ago (20-25 years; yea I know this shows my age) there used to be upper scale turtables with up to four(4) tonearms in the same unit! This was so you could have a veriety of cartriges to suit your current listening taste. I have three for mine but I have to swap out the headshells when the notion moves me. Sure V15 Type V w/VN45HE stylus- Good all around sound and rather quick. Also the most worn out! Ortofon VMS-30 mkII- Still good range but for smoother "Barry White" evenings. 13. The Rotel RB-1080 amp I recently bought has a dampening factor of (get this) 1000. Funny, the only things I was really looking at was THD (.03% max at half rated power) and s/n ratio (116db to 120db depending on where you look). I must admit that I too had no idea what the dampening factor was but it's good to know I can grin when mine (or just place your name here) turns out to be a good one. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 (McIntosh C33 is coming!!) 14. Jim, O.k. The input (1-10) level is probably equal to the Threshold I mentioned before and the Expansion looks like it is measured in db increase increments. That expansion level is most likely gonna do the most damage if you use the unit. The LED level that is on it is probably in two different colors. The change in color denotes where it is makeing the signal quieter (left side?) and when it makes things louder. The point that the it goes from one color to another is the "Threshold" point. I haven't sold anythig on eBay either but it may be worth looking into. I think eBay gets 3% of the total selling price for the item. I thought I saw a few months ago a listing for one of these. Maybe not the exact model but it sounds very similar. I don't think it went for much more than $50. But still that's more than you paid. You may want to do a search on eBay to see if you can find the sale of that similar item. Just type in the make and model.
  15. If this thing is a Dynamic Range Expander I'd be VERY careful using it. What it does is looks at passages in the program (music) and if they are quiet this thing will make the passage quieter. While on the other hand at stronger passeages it will make them louder. There should be two adjustments on there (I think). One is to control the "Threshold" in which you can tell it where you draw the line between what passages are quiet and which are stronger. Then there is an "Expansion" control. This will let you control the intensity of the unit's action (i.e.-o.k., we have a loud passage here. How much louder would you like to make it?). DBX put these units out for many years although I doubt your came from them. Probably a knockoff in the function and design. I'll get right to the part you may not want to hear. THESE THINGS ARE DEADLY TO KLIPSCH TWEETERS!!! I blew out three of them in my KLF-20's before I was convinced that my dbx 3BX Series Two was the problem. It worked fine in my system before I got the 20's since my old speaks had a sensitivity rating of about 80db (yechh!). But tweets in the Klipsch's are the weakest links in the chain. It doesn't take much distorted signal to fry-em. What the unit does is just increase power voltage (and distort the amps output signal) to the speakers and this is where it gets into trouble. It will over drive the amp to point of clipping. That is "clipping" off the peak of the sign wave and converting it into a very high pitched distortion signal. Which no speaker likes. Result? Over driven speakers with the weakest driver giving up the ghost. If you set this thing to very mild levels it MIGHT not hurt anything, but I wouldn't chance it. Anyway, at very mild levels you could probably barely tell it's working at all. Oh well, you could either keep it as a nastalgia piece or... there's always eBay! 19. Mace, If the boomyness won't go away you may (if not already) want to try using the spikes if you have carpeted floors. Also, take a look at the equipment (cd player, amp, pre-amp, etc.). Make sure that there is plenty of isolation from vibrations. If you have the money and room to go with one of the aftermarket spike companies that's great. So far I took the cheap way out till I buy all the McIntosh I can (or can't) afford. I found in my basement a roll of very dense poly-propylene. It looks kinda like water pipe insulation. I cut it into 2"-3" circles and put that under each foot of each unit in the system. The highs and middle were much more defined and the bass did tighten up a bit. 24. Mace, From what I have heard (my 20's are only four months old) the mids and highs are supposed to get less brash over time. I can't say I've noticed a BIG difference and it's not something that happens all of the sudden. Your ears will get used to what they sound like now and will be constantly readjusting as playing time goes on because it is such a gradual process. I did talk to Trey (a wealth of information) in tech support and he says that they are plenty broke-in from the factory. Apart from that he also said that he believes the whole break-in thing is "Voodoo" (his word). If you have a real time alalyzer somewhere in your system you can always at a quick glance be able to make a comparison of what the meter says and what your hearing. This is very handy to determine if a driver is blown or a source signal sounds like it really reaks of any quality. I've found the best (and cheapest) thing to get the best sound from these monsters is experiment with speaker placement. This is helped enormously with the aid of an SPL meter(Sound Pressure Level). I have an old HH Scott 830z that I wouldn't part with for the world for this reason (as well as it being an RTA). A hand held model can be had from Radio Shack for about $35 but you have to be sure to have it in the same place as your ears will be while your in your favorite listening place, a camera tripod should work very well for this. Radio Shack is also a good source of 12ga. Monster speaker cable @ 50 cents a foot. If you want, I have made up an Excel sheet that can track the measurements and make a graph of the rooms resonance levels. It's very easy to use. The test may take a number of hours to do. When I did mine I turned the levels for the high-end way down as to not overheat the tweeters (the legend's weakest link). I also put on a pair of ear protection headphones to keep from getting tinnitus. Your room will more than likely have a different speaker position than mine but I found the highest SPL readings at 9 1/2" from both the back and side wall. 25. I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE!!! The waiting anyway. Today I broke down and called Audio Classics and ordered a C33 in excellent condition. Price, $1221 with shipping from NY to Cincinnati. Should be here by mid next week. Took a week off from work just to "play" with it. They tell me the 33 is the same as the 34 but the 34 has one phono input rather than two and something about needing an external box for video switching(?) So I guess now I can join the "Mac" club. The only esoteric thing I found was a different labeling of an input: C34V says "CD" while the C33 says "AUX". Tomato, Tomahto. The C34V also has a dedicated TV input unlike the C33 stcalwell: I may still have that resistor conversion done. Who knows, I may try it my self.
