  3. Carefull....I just heard on the radio today that some "I doubt it" group is saying that anyone making under $40k/year will get little or none of "their" $300. Let's just hope this isn't another "From the rich", "For the rich", "By the rich" letdown that I'm all too used to. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 (But want a McIntosh!) 5. The biggest difference I saw between the C34V (Al's) and the C35 was the volume control. The C34V has a standard looking dial pot while the C35 has an independent button for "up" and "down". I opted not to get the C35 because knowing my luck, and I've run into this before, I'd want a volume setting in between two of the steps. Sonicly it should be great. I plan on getting the C34V (Al wanna-be) in lue another C-40 showing up on eBay for $1,225!! ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 (But want a McIntosh!) 7. MacKlipsch, Well, unfortunatly.......no. Just as well for now till I get the amp and the cabinet paid off. Although I am expecting a court settlement that may afford me to get a C40 or a C30 in great shape. Hey!! Now that the Fed's are gonna return our tax money to us ($300 for me) it sure could inspire one to get a higher model!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! Just got a copy of the Carver C-1 manual in the mail today and it proves a lot of what others have been saying about Carver and Klipsch (being way too harsh). It says that using very efficient amps and speakers will render the top travel of the volume knob at about 10:00. Sure....now I hear this. 9. Just saw a C-40 on eBay for $885 so far (drool, drool). He's even giving a money back guarantee! Keepin' an eye out for it but I dought if the price will hold. Would be nice though.
  10. I'm not too far in front of you in this quest. I started a few months ago in search of just mildly improving my system that hasn't been used in 4 years (I moved out and it was still at my parents' house). O.k., I get the system set up to find that the eq is toast. Not too much of a problem, it was a BSR EQ-3100 (bout' $150 when new). Being tired of the cheapie boxes I went and got a dbx 1231 from a studio recording equipment store. Now where at $400 spent. Then I sent my Carver reciever for a good going over ($213) and new interconnects (RCA cables) from Monster Cable ($230). So now we're up to $843. Still not being totaly happy I went and ordered a pair of Klipsch KLF-20's in Mahogany ($1,100 with shipping)and those just made EVERYTHING sound different. Fried a couple of tweeters with all the eq settings at the levels for the old speakers. And messed with speaker placement for about three weeks to get the bass right. By this time I stopped asking my girlfriend if it "sounds right" after changing something. Decided the receiver still wasn't cutting it so I found a Carver C-1 preamp on eBay for $150. Using it as the preamp (duh) and the receiver as the amp only, found the amp section of the receiver was on it's way out. O.K......new amp. Heard some good things about Rotel being a nice match-up so I paid through the nose for an RB-1080 two channel (200 wpc at .03% THD). The C-1 still sounds really harsh so NOW I'm in the market for a McIntosh C-30 preamp (used but in great shape, about $1,000). By now the ol' Gusdorf 5451 cabinet/rack all this sets in starting to bow at the shelves pretty good. Found a cabinet from Studio Tech (model U-48 in Rosewood) for half price because they're closing out the old models (regularly $899 + $46 for casters). Then after all that it would be a good idea to get some sort of surge protector/line conditioner. I picked out one from Monster Cable (HTS-5000) which can be had on eBay for $370 + shipping. So now the grand total damage is $3,675 and will probably hit just over $5,000 when it's "done". So yes, this hobby can be very expensive and addicting. Have fun!! ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 (But want a Mac C-30!) 11. You guys have been great helping me through this. Thanks to Al "The Mac God" K's hyperlink I think a decision has been made. It's down to one of two, the C-30 or the C-35. I didn't see either one of them on Audio Classics but that doesn't mean they won't get them. I found another site that claims to have them, http://www.esper.com/macaudio . Any one know anything about these people? I'll have to wait a while before I get it. Just ordered the LAST U-48RW First Edition rack/cabinet from StudioTech yesterday. Half price mind ya! After that recovery we'll get the Big Mac!
  12. I'm not gonna try to sound sarcastic or anything of the like but....welcome to the world of Carver. I have a few of their pieces and this stuff is heavy duty, almost downright brutle. I just got a C-1 preamp for my KLF-20's and a nice Rotel amp and let me tell ya, that preamp is harsh to say the least. The fact that your Klipsch's are so sensitive only accentuates the "turn off POP!!". If it happens if you use the switch on the front of the amp that is just a spark jumping between the contact points of the switch itself. Although indignant, not to worry. If your using some kind of outlet strip and use the switch on IT to power down then it could just be the capacitors discharging. I don't think this is the case since most Carver amps turn off the speaker relays before the discharge happens anyway. But in a nutshell, your not doing harm to the ol' beauties. Don't get me wrong, I've been a Carver fan for about twenty years. It's just when I got the 20's that the topography of almost everything else in the system had to change. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette (maybe being mothballed) dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 13. Gee, this is going to be a major coin flip. The C27 or the C28. Life is too hard.
  14. ALK, Thanks for the heads-up on the C28. I saw one on eBay for $600 and was this close to getting it. I just saw a C27 on Audio classics for $650 in mint condition. Sound like the best one so far? This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-17-2001 at 05:55 PM
  15. Just to throw something out there, but, do you have an AC line conditioner? It may explain some or the line noise. 16. If your talking about inverting the phase of the speaker (swapping the + and - terminal connections) then there is a real good chance you'll lose a lot of bass. The air (soundwaves) will be moving in the room but are being cancelled out by the other (woofer) driver. If your just turn the cabinet upside-down and the tweeter/midrange is closer to the floor, then the accoustic responce will depend on what kind of flooring you have (carpet, hardwood, vinyl, etc.). Carpet will probably "suck" up the HF pretty good and anything hard would have to rely on reflection in order for it to reach your ears. This is all taking for granted that your not lying on the floor when listening. 17. Thanks guys for all the input and keep it commin'. I do have to through in another criteria though, this systen is definitely not going HT, TV? yes. But not HT. The room it's in won't allow for it. The input really is great, KEEP IT COMMIN'! Sal, How 'bout the C27? This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-16-2001 at 10:48 PM
  18. sunnysal, Thanks for the suggestions but $1800 to $4000 was bit more than I have to spend. The C15 is looking like a possibility.
  19. Much like what HORNED is asking I need a new preamp. However my buget is a little more limited and I'm interested in an SS unit. I'd say $1500 TOPS, and even that's a strech. My needs are as follows: Inputs: 1 Tape loop (preferably two) 1 CD 1 Tuner 1 Aux. 1 Phono (MM) External Processor Loop Outputs: 1 set of Mains (two would be nice if bi-amping later) 1 for each tape loop Other Needs: Loudness switch Tone Controls not necessary Headphone jack would be nice but not crucial ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette (maybe being mothballed) dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 20. Perhaps a McIntosh C15. It's not a tube rig but it does have tone controls and 2 switchable main outputs. MSRP is $1500.
  21. You should be able to get just the plug. I take it your talking about the male end attached to the grill itself. 22. O.K. so I didn't make a very good decision with the preamp. I did some poking around on the net and another one did spark my interest. A McIntoch C-15 has most of what I needed. At MSRP of $1500 it's gonna take a number of months to save up for this one. Until then I'd like to get some feedback on which ones to pick from. It'll be strictly two-channel only, no HT is possible in this room. I'm open for and encourage suggestions. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette (maybe being mothballed) dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 23. I was yelled at once before for turning the Klipsch site into a political forum. Sorry I did it again I will not comment to any responses Really? Is your argument so weak it cannot stand rebuttal?
  24. About 16 years ago I worked for a local stereo store that sold these God-awful things. The Life Style systems weren't out yet but I do remember the 301's, 501's, 601's, and 901's. At one time I actually considered getting the 601's 'cause they looked neat with the grilles off. The 501's looked and sounded like some sort of room dehumidifier. There was a young man that would take three busses from across town to my store just to hear Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" on the 901's backed up by a dbx 20/20 eq. while using a Yamaha M-80 amp. Aaahhh, the days of having all the demos going through Audio Authority switching bays. If anything needed an eq it was/is the 901's. Bass? Some. SPL? Little to none. He would ask me to turn on the signal generator just so he could feel the air moving from the ports. I thought it felt like the exhaust from my grandmother's 60' Ford Falcon (about as effeciant too). It was really hard to try to sell those things at $1,200 when they sat next to a pair of Yamaha NS-1000m's, NS-500's and Celestion 444's. 444 was an interesting piece, 4 1/2 foot tower with a 12" woofer, 12" passive radiator, 1 mid and one tweeter. Looked a lot like a KLF-30. But then again that was the first tower I'd ever heard. I don't think Klipsch even existed around here yet. I first heard about them from a friend my brothers'. He just came back from being stationed over seas and had heard them there. That was back when I wasn't even worthy to say the name "K*****". One thing I haven't heard anyone touch on was Bose's marketing stratagy. What I'm refering to is that you don't buy their product ANYWHERE at a discounted price unless it is the same price at ALL stores everywhere. Now that's arrogance! ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany Carver C-1 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette-on the fence weather to mothball or not dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 25. Well, I got home from work this evening after putting a new battery in the Talon (figures, just when $900 went in to the amp ). Turned the bass up and the all the treble is flat. I think it may take a harder push of the system to get THIS amp to clip as the Receiver did to fry the tweeters.
