  1. I never imagined pa speakers could image. I didn’t know that was a thing.
  2. Thanks for the replies guys. Ha. Maybe mine got shot with some bed liner. Ah, I stand corrected. The 835P is the powered version, which makes total sense. I indeed had the passive. Westcoastdrums, that’s interesting that you got to listen to both the passive and the active and you needed to boost the high end. I probably wasn’t very clear about the resonance I heard. In my living room I felt the high end was actually a bit soft. What I perceived to be a resonance issue was an artificial overtone and character to sounds I was very familiar with in some of my favorite tunes: like coins hitting a hard floor or harmonics on mandolins. I was honestly amazed at how good they sounded for an application far outside of their design goals. I have to agree, I don’t think I could live with them in my living room stock.
  3. I had the opportunity to babysit some JBL SRX835 passive PA speakers. I made two speakon to five-way binding post connectors and hooked them up to my Luxman 550AX in the living room. For those unfamiliar with these speakers they are 15" three ways with a differential drive woofer, a closed-back cone/horn midrange and a titanium compression driver tweeter that is also used from 700 Hz up in some of JBL's cinema speakers. Quick observations: they seemed very well balanced with their stock passive crossover. They actually imaged really well. The bass was surprisingly articulate and lean (in a good way) when positioned out of the corners a bit, and the mids were well integrated and executed. I would think for pro sound they would be plug and play unless there were some super reflective or absorbent environmental factors. However, I instantly heard a problem with the tweeter that I would attribute to breakup in a frequency that was well within the limits of my old man hearing. For any critical listening the compression drivers in the tweets would have to go. Again, it seems an odd choice for JBL to use a driver they use in some of their cinema speakers from 700Hz up in the SRX835 when crossed at 2.4KHz. Plus, I was looking at large boxes with steel screens and truck bed liner sprayed on them. My take away from this little experiment was it would be interesting to see what would happen if Klipsch made a Cornwall sized speaker, with some of that technology (the DD woofer and the mid cone horn that covers 300-3Khz basically). I think there is potential there. Anyway, while you guys were doing productive stuff, I was playing with PA speakers in my living room. So there you go.
  4. Yeah, just sell them to me and be done with it. I will restore them to factory specs.
  5. I used the denim variant which seems to be working just fine.
  6. Chris, I am guessing this horn would not be a good candidate for a passive crossover and an Faital Pro HF146 (or similar). Would this horn need to have an active crossover?
  7. I suspect the sound of the diaphragm will be more important in your application. Is there a way you could try both drivers and see what you think?
  8. I am using the 10x18 zxpc. Not much power. At my chair, about 12ft from the speakers, I sometimes get to 105 db. I would think the horns are getting less than 5 watts peak.
  9. Randy reminded me that I had left the for sale notice in this thread. I have corrected that. They sold a long time ago. I should not have sold them. I am starting another project they would be perfect for d’oh.
  10. I would suggest that these work best from 1k up in a two way. This led me to use a different 15” (Faital) in my two-way with a flatter response above 1khz. That worked out pretty well. I believe Dave has more hours of experience with the N314x than I do. I hear the same issues he did when he was using them crossed as low as I am.
  11. I like the experimentation. I always thought the mids and tweets were a bit hot in my ‘78 Heresys too. Mine are definitely not 10db too hot though. Sure that’s the stock woofer? There is a thread around here describing moving the squawker and tweet down a tap (-3db) along with the corresponding cap change that always sounded interesting. An l-pad might be easier for experimentation I guess. Keep up the good work.
  12. Those are super cool. And as others have mentioned, if you had a 16ohm mid and went to an 8 ohm you’ll need a cap and coil change on your crossover and a different autoformer setting. Those speakers should be stellar.
  13. Can you tell how much attenuation is on the B&C with your crossover? And what is the value of the cap on the mid circuit? I’m not familiar with that crossover.
  14. I’m using the 3015lf_4 crossed at 500, and the zxpc 18x10 horn with a Faital ProHF146 with -12db attenuation courtesy of a 3636 autoformer with 1.2uf In front of the AF and 3.0mh in parallel with the driver. I get all the in-your-face mid presentation of my CWIIs only much more refined. I believe the speaks that avatar was selling were 4 ohms, going from memory. I’ve not used that compression driver before but you could experiment with an lpad and see if it’s a level thing.
  15. After experimenting with a pair of these new Eminence N314x compression drivers I bought another pair for additional projects. I don’t have time for more projects. These drivers are $700 a pair new. Selling these good as new, shipped to CONUS for $600.
  16. Dave, hope you are doing ok. Have you had time for more experimentation with this driver? The derecho that hit Iowa took the doors off my shop and damaged the roof. My OCD will have to be happy with experiments on my living room speakers for the near future. I do think you are on to something with the higher crossover point. Even at 1kHz 2nd order I think it sounds really good. Your idea of using it for a tweeter is a good one I think.
  17. I understand exactly what you mean here. What do you think the useable low end on the N314x is?
  18. I have had plenty of OCD issues with this two way. I would need therapy if tried a three way again. 😳
  19. What Edgar said 🤓. I talked to eminence about Re value at 1k mounted to a horn to get close.
