  1. I built a pair of DIY LS bass bins before. We are not interested in trying to build Klipsch clones. The Klipsch la scale and k horn is a lot of work. I'm still trying to refine the cornscala. ;-). I wish someone had the la Scala dog house to build from. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Consultation with ALK was the primary reason. The horn/BMS will be more linear than the 15C. The horn some the collapsing polar responses above 4500 if I recall (as I was told). The ES4500 will have the HF take over. The contrac can easily handle being crosses at 4500. The BMS driver can handle incredible power at 300hz. The 3 changes should make this a one of a kind with unique results. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I have heard the older CT tweeters... amazing replica of the K77 but not for me. I liked the idea of picking my drivers. The Eiptrac tweeter has been a game changer. I used to believe the Contrac was the only real upgrade, the Eliptrac tweeter seems to match the performance of the Contrac at 1/5th the size which helps being the cabinet size down without sacrificing performance. I think its pretty amazing that there is such god data for all these tweeters.
  4. yeah... not much demand but its the same math... The Grills are sourced from dave as the owner wanted the woofer recessed in. After speaking with ALK and learning some of the characteristics of the Eliptrac 240, the crossovers and mid driver are changing. The owner will order a ES300 and ES4500 from AL. Additionally we will be using the BMS 4591. Should be pretty cool to hear a cornscala crossed so low.
  5. These are getting an awesome bass that will be bolted to it with big casters... in a flat black lacquer. Should be pretty amazing... I could never fit in my own home but can't wait to get it a listen when done. All the parts are coming here and Ill handle final assembly.
  6. I was asked to help with a massive project. This will be a true one of a kind. Ive hooked up the 240 horn and say it does through a larger sound stage and seems more expansive. The Speaker with be Fastlane Eliptrac 240/B&C DE750, Fastlane contrac with B&C DE10 and ALK ES networks, Kappa 15C. Cardis bining posts and some fantastic wire for hookup. The whole project should wrap up in a few week and it will be shipped to NYC.
  7. I'll post a pic of the Rogers Fedelity. When time is no object that style of building is my fav. PCBs keep everything repeatable in ways ptp wouldn't have for us. Thanks for all the kind words. indont think anyone is being Malishious.
  8. Some boards are sourced directly and others are under lic. Ive never portrayed myself as a tube circuit brain trust, but a hobbyist who has assembled an awesome team. I do pay a lic to him. Shannon, my technical and myself worked out circuit changes we needed to build the amps the way we wanted. Shannon's designs as are Peters are incredible and offer those wanting to build their own amps a proven roadmap.
  9. Th idea with the 300b project was for simplicity... placing in series wasn't what I was aiming for... but getting large enough caps was hard... Either the batch we got had a defect... total sucked, had played out on turrets. I know why some combine axial and can caps and what not.
  10. Hey guys, On a few notes. I do think there are changes to sonic sig of an amp with rectifier changes. I make this statement as a personal belief, not one intended for debates. The Stereo 15 is setup to run 5AR4 and 5U4s without issue. I prefer 5U4s for the decreased B+ which is kinder to the less reliable new EL84s. Additionally, I have lost many a new 5AR4s, the NOS 5U4s are very accessible/high value and provide the user with a reliable US NOS tube. Re: PtP vs PCB. For me the choice was for repeatability. We have 3 people here wiring things up… I was seeking the ability for each to come out exactly the same. The PCBs used are high quality, thick, double sided with heavy traces. I find repairs/changes to be really easy as you can decoder/wick the solder out easily and replaced with the value of the part labeled below the part. Ive seen a lot of really good PtP wiring… cant calm to be one capable of doing it. However, Ive also encounter problems with PtP wiring too. Several years ago we did 3 300b amps hoping to prototype and start building. The circuit was super popular and well thought out, but we encounter a hum… spent 20+ hours trying to figure out what was going on. Ultimately, the power supply caps were faulty. Getting certain values in axial was difficult and I let go of the project. Getting consistent parts has been significant easier when intended for PCB. The style of construction I hold in the highest regard is via turret board. Rogershighfidelity does this… Marantz, quad and Mcintosh did this… The build time would significantly increase which would make the amps unsellable… least by me :-) Re sonic… Im not sure PCB aren’t the quietest method. If all things are equal there shouldn’t be a difference, but as always parts, circuit and builder effect implementation.
  11. Thanks guys. Working at it slow and steady as they say.
  12. Let me know if the sale falls through. I get you're selling the orig copies.
  13. Though I have a VPI prime for serious listening my Pioner plx1000 is completely bad *** and I love it. I had a sl1300 mkii and it was ok. Arm was rewired and all the cool stuff but it was no better then my rega p3. It was cool but not a performer. maybe I had a lemon. The Pioner is the same awesome platform will the the best tweaks and it is some much better than my Orig SL1200 ever was. If you want a awesome SL1200 get the Pionner. The New SL1200 is not an upgrade of the original but a complete reimagining. I have a pipe dream to take my Pionner, get the tone arm adapter from eBay, and use it to install a SME V. That would be amazingly cool.
  14. The crossover are ALK ES500s and are probably the nicest set of crossovers Ive ever seen. I have a 2way cornscala I hope to do the upgrade to early next year... Mind glowingly good.
  15. I was initially not a believer. A customer decided to take the leap ahead of me and asked me to aid in the install. I heard his top hat on a bass bin I had just completed... it was pretty stunning even at 1AM. A call to ALK and 6weeks later I had them in my arms... hards would be to small. These are mammoth, ~20lbs each. I can't say I did an apples to apples comparison... I added thread certs to my cabs to secure the back panel. That said, the difference was incredible... not like oh, NOS tube but like crap amp to the best amp you've ever heard... like box speakers to headphones. Separation, imaging bass depth and control... all improved. I get no discount from ALK... just really believe this was a great upgrade.... Parts used... Cornwall cab (6.3cu ft) Fastlane audio Eliptrac 400 and Eliptrac tweeter, B7C DE750 (highly recommend), Eminence 15C and secret herbs and spices. I have a similar cornscala as a 2 way with same driver compliment and ALK AP12-500... the ES is a night and day improvement.
