  1. I haven't heard either of the amps, I'm mainly following the recommendations of individuals on this board. Sometimes this isn't easy to do because you have people in different camps who love their piece. It will boil down to the best price for the condition of the amp. How does the Scott 299 pair up against other Scott series? A lot has been said about the 222 series and the A/B of the 299. A seller contacted me off line about a 299 (No Suffix) and quality/sound wise what type of amp is it? If there is a "best" amp in the Scott series what would it be, which one has the most powert and best sound? Appease me if this is redundant, but there are so many of them to choose from--I want to get the best bang for the buck. NOS mentioned different brands in an earlier thread but he did not go into overkill describing them. EE
  2. Advice taken, I will not look at it again.
  3. NOS, I thought that you were a "Scott" Man only and now you are making pitches for Eico. Just kidding, the prices for the decent scotts are through the roof. I'm considering an eico myself, I will track them to see what they are going for. How many watts is eico compared to scott? Both of them have great reviews though.
  4. ... I am __8____ feet away from the speakers. ... there is a _patio door behind my head ... I sit up______ ( ... I am _always straight or tired____
  5. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1941770957 I'm looking for a scott 299C tube amp, while cruising ebay this is what I saw. Can some explain to me exactly what this is? Has this been modded or is this still considered a tube amp? EE You are bidding on a vintage H.H. Scott model 299-C StereoMaster Integrated Tube Amplifier. Circa 1963-4. Forty watts per channel. Response: 20-20,000 Hz. Has Tape, Tuner, Extra, and dual Phono inputs. Left/Right channel balance and Bass/Treble controls. Polished aluminum faceplate, chassis and matching knobs. Output speaker taps for 4, 8, and 16 Ohms. Has the H.H. Scott TRA8-5-4 Output transformers. This is a Parts Set or could be restored. No tubes included. Someone added a external cap to replace one of the metal Filter caps. The output and power transformers test good and could be used to build a custom amp. Buyer pays shipping via UPS Ground for 35 lbs. & Insurance from New Jersey. I accept Checks, Money Orders, PayPal, and BidPay. Please check my Ebay ratings buyers are always pleased! Thank you.
  6. Dean, I did not answer your other question - I have two friends who have the 30s like me but they are in the HT arena right now. The other friend has some $20,000 SS set up that does not include horns, he's the one giving it to me. I've listened to his system and it sounds really nice, but that's too much money for me to invest. He's always talking about his friend in Colorado who has a pair of K-horns connected to some quick silvers. Colin, after reading your response I felt some what over stimulated, but that's good. What I can understand I'll take it, and the other I'll ask questions about it. EE
  7. Dean, right now I'm living in the UK. This is making it difficult to try equipment before purchase.
  8. I'll start to look at the used audio places.
  9. No LPs and no plans to in the future, strictly CDs.
  10. What type of Scott 299 should I be looking for? If I'm not mistaken, there are several available and they are not all the same. What do you guys recommend?
  11. NOS, Without listening to tube gear with my setup I would like to keep the price under $500. Most guys with tubes listen to classical, jazz etc, but I listen exclusively to Gospel to include some comtemporary christian music. Gospel is mostly laid back and vocal, not a lot of instruments most of the time and some tracks are somewhat bassy. The only time I put in something else is around Christmas time and then it's some Ella Fitzgearld and Mahalia Jackson. I really need some advice/encouragement on making this plunge. I have audiophile friends who are stuck on expensive SS. Their systems sound really good and they are not giving me any help. What will the mods/upgrades of a scott or other unit do for the bottom end, highs, mids etc.
  12. Since wpc isn't much of a concern with Klipsch speakers, what should I be looking for in a vintage tube amp? In the SS arena I would look at current, what are the key areas with tubes, ie, tube type, manufacturer, maker etc? On this board I see the debate between Scott and Eico, are these the two leading names of vintage gear? Just for discussion sake, if I purchased a used Scott, Eico or other piece of equipment that was in working order but in need of repair, what type of repairs would I be looking at. If these units are stock from years ago, what kind of upgrades/updates are available to improve the sound? Are there newer tubes now that can enhance the bottom end? Last question, what does it mean to bias your amp? EE
  13. Lynn, What type of amp are you using to run your 30s and how does tubes sound with them?
  14. Thanks for the responses. Jeff and I are thinking on the same lines, my next questions would have been "what are the other choices for a good, starter tubes"? I do not want to pour a lot of money into tube equipment considering I'm really new at it. Reading all of the tweaks and soldering that some are doing and have done somewhat deters me. I do not want to purchase something that I'm constantly have to work on unless it's that 1976 Duece and a Quarter that I want to purchase when I return to the states. Mobile you mentioned that there are better equipment to be had, what can you and others recommend that sounds good without having put a lot out initially? Did you say this because Jolida is an integrated? Is this the best way to go or do you recommend separate amp/preamp? Nos, if wish that I can take you up on your offer, but not being in the CONUS makes it difficult for me. I want to drive in the tube direction but not being able to hear before I purchase is the way that I will have to go. That's why I'm depending on the input from the board members. Is it possible to get a real nice set for $800 or less? I'm quite sure that this will be used, I do not have a problem with its purchases as long as it's in good working condition. Thanks EE
  15. Is anyone using the Jolida 801A? Just want to know how it sounds and your review/recommendation of the product. Most of you are using K-horns/Belles etc, I currently have KLF-30s, will the speakers make a difference in the sound paired with tubes? I must admit that I'm still very apprehensive about using 70-80 wpc to push the four 12s on my speakers. How many watts do I need to push to high levels. I must admit that I mostly listen to music at low, conservation levels, but I also want the ability to crank them if the need arises. For some reason I cannot shake the sound of the tube gear that I recently heard at an audio show. I will not reply tonight because I have something to do with the family, but I will reply tomorrow when I log on. Thanks EE
  16. From reading the responses most of you listen to classical, jazz, rock etc, does any one listen to Gospel? Gospel is my genre of music. I like some of the newer artists but I really prefer some of the old commissioned days with Fred Hammond, Keith Staten and the guys. Also, I listen to the early Winans, their music sounded great then. Who can forget Mahaila Jackson or James Cleveland and not to mention Sam Cooke in his gospel days. I'm not trying to proselyte any of you, but gospel sounds good emanating from Klipsch.
  17. Does anyone have any experience with this preamp? This used to be sold by Galen Carol but has been bought out by another company. I've heard that in its day this was one of the top ss preamps available. A few have shown up on audiogon at a reasonable price, but I would like more info on this product before considering a purchase. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks EE
  18. Saving Private Ryan is really a good movie, but When We Were Soldiers is really good also. If I had to rate them, I would say that the latter is the best IMO.
  19. Craig, First the HK is for sale now the 2 amps, what are you trying to do? Were you able to sale you HK without biting the bullet? You still have not let me know how the outlaw sounds! EE
  20. Craig, Send me a message at work if you do not get any prospective buyers.
  21. Has anyone heard of a tube preamp called the "seer"? I talked to this rep at the show and was told that they are very popular in the states. I've done some searching on the net and I haven't seen a review of it yet. The selling price is about 1,000 british pound, dollar equivalent should put it around 1,500. EE
  22. I do not remember a bullet shape, but I do remember that the speakers were of an odd design. Most speakers are rectangular, this was toward the base but up to there was jagged edges like a rock formation. Not the most eloquent way to explain it but this is what comes to mind.
  23. I cannot remember the name of the speakers, it wasn't not a common name. Was it a Lowther design, I'm not sure? When you go to shows like this every rep ensures that the point out the pieces of the system and the cost of each item. That info was volunteered, I usually would not ask questions such as this. I looked through all of the literature that I picked up from the show and I did not see a mention of the speakers.
  24. Malcolm, At a high-end show like this, every speaker that I listened to was extremely expensive. Listening to speakers equal to or higher in price played through solid state sounded good, but the tube sound was different in a better way to me. The sound wasn't as fatiguing to the ears. EE
  25. Finally, I was able to listen to some tubes for the first time and I am thoroughly impressed. I went to a Hi-Fi show down in London on Friday. I cannot remember the the speaker name but they had a single 10-inch speaker with a price tag of $9,000 plus. The playing device was a combination CD player and preamp in once case called a Capitole CD Player and the amps were 40w class A prestige monoblocks. Needless to say this was top of the line but the sound was awesome. My friend and I spent a lot of time in that room. Now, I better understand all the hype of tube technology. I haven't heard as many systems as some people, but in my short listening span, this was the best music that I've heard. Chalk up one who is leaning toward tubes. EE
