  1. Hello, I wonder if you would be so kind as to provide me with the productions scans for Klipsch Music Reproducers # 242 and 1720 & 1721
  2. Well, that was the problem, these things sound amazing like they are supposed to now. Thank you for everyone's help Here's a link to a video of them playing
  3. Do you think the Klipsch Timeline PDF is a typo? Maybe they meant RP302? Also, I did find a problem in the original crossover, two of the spade lugs were slightly loose. I tightened them up and reinstalled the original driver and now it sounds like it's supposed to, bass and all. I am beginning to wonder if the bass dropping out probably was just a loose wire and not a crossover problem " The first three-way Klipschorn incorporated a Jensen RP203 tweeter. This tweeter came from the famous Jensen G-610 Triaxial 15" driver and required considerable negotiations with Jensen. It was not until mid-1952 that all Klipschorns were three-way. A two-way Klipschorn with response to 12Khz was generally adequate for program material up to that time. The University MID-T- 4401 replaced the Jensen unit as the tweeter of choice later in 1951. "
  4. Ah your suspicions are correct Also, very helpful information confirming impedance on the woofer for me. Looks like 8 Ohm on tweet, 16 Ohm on Mid and 4 Ohm on woofer. Interesting combination Anyone able to decipher the finish code 413F? I read through the ones listed on the PDF and didn't find it Wonder what the chances are of finding a vintage Jensen 203 tweeter anywhere Thanks Robin
  5. I say crossover upgrade project because that is what it was turned in, a project, ha! I rescued this single khorn in 2016 off Clist, brought it home and tried setting up a mono system with it. I sourced a couple mono tune amps, tried them and they sounded horrible. The 6V6 based tube amps sound sterile with not much base. I sourced a cool EL84 based mono tune amp (Madison Fielding Series 12)and it had moments where it sounded glorious, exactly what I was looking for, then the bass would drop out, almost like a bad connection. Ended up leaving it in the corner and not really doing anything with it until recently when I acquired my holy grail, a Lowther Music reproducer. Wanting to use this Madison Fielding amp I tested in on a Karlson I have kicking around and it works fine there. Ultimately, I took it in to a shop to be reconditioned and bought another amp ( Sherwood) to use on the Khorn. Bass was missing so i decided to finally remove the crossover and send it to Bob Crites for rebuild. Course he had me check the Ohms on the drivers and taht's where thing began to get squirrely. The tweete tested out at 4.2 which I thought to be low, The mid tested at 11.4 which confirms a 16Ohm Mid. The woofer tested at 2.6 which is also strange. So what I thought was going to be easy peasy now is getting a little more challenging. Now I have to disassemble the speaker and confirm drivers so I can get the correct crossover rebuilt, which is why this thread. This speaker is actually looking to be a true 1951 speaker, The serial number indicates it was probably the real 242nd Khorn ever built and it is in excellent condition so I think it deserves to have everything verified and I will use it to build a true mono hifi project around it, featuring a Klipschorn Sound Reproducer. Interesting name, sounds an awful lot like a Lowther Hegeman Music Reproducer of the same vintage. I think Lowther had about 400 of these delivered by them so Klispch would be catching up. I have done the research and have a lot of questions, for example, I wasn't able to confirm the finish and I'd also like to confirm what speaker components are used and the proper Ohms. I'd also like to confirm polarity for each component. The lamp cord used doesn't help. Seems all the terminals are marked 1 or 2 not - or +. The tweeter is an Electorvoice T35, with an Ohm reading of 4.2 whould that indicate 8 Ohm? The mid is a Univerity Model SAHF. It's labled 16 Ohm and tests at 11.4 so the is pretty straight forward The Woofer is a Jensen and I cma unfamiliar with it. It tests at 2.6 Hope you guys like pictures Thanks in advance for your help
  6. "I also have a fully rebuilt M200t that I may add in for the top end and biamp them." Now we're cooking. Here's an old video when I was playing around with my CF-3s
  7. I am sure your Stromberg Carlson sounds very nice. The OP was looking for suggestions so I shared my observations. I personally haven't had much success with SET amps and Klipsch speakers, just speaking from my experience. I think the Klipsch line is better suited to EL84 and KT88 push pull type tube amps. I had a Carver Cherry 260 with the KT 120 tubes in it. They sounded very nice on my hereseys and Cornwalls but I wasn't able to bi-amp them on the CF-3's. I had a buddy come over, TNRabbit, who is also Carver and Klipsch aficionado and listen to them with the Cherry 260 amps. I left him alone for about a half hour and while they did play loud he walked out of the room and wanted to know what happened to the mid range. He heard them on the Sunfire so he knew what to expect. I've also had a plethora of Carver amps and they sound nice but it's not about the loudness, but the quality of the sound. The Sunfire amp is a completely different sound which is why I suggest it. If you really want to hear what your CF3's sing. Try bi-amping or bi-wiring them. I think you will be surprised.
  8. I don't think you will be very happy. I had those speakers for almost 20 years. I sold them last year. They really want power to open up. I have several 300b tube amps and they just didn't sound good on any of my Klipsch speakers. The hot set up I had for the CF3 was a Sunfire tube preamp and the 2 x 600 Signature amp. This amp will let you hook up both the current output and the voltage output with 300wpc each. I ran the current to the tweeters and the voltage output to the woofers and the sound was unbelievable, kind of a bi wire set up. When I didn't biwire or bi amp these speakers it seemed like the mi range was missing.
  9. Nice pics everyone. Here's one I took the other day of my 300b amp, please pardon the dust.
  10. I've had these in the closet long enough so I guess it's time to move them. I bought them new and they look good and work great. There is one water ring on one speaker but it's not very noticeable. These are the version 1's. When I bought them they didn't have the port tubes installed and they didn't have feet so had to buy some from parts express and only found 4 inch tubes. Based on the consecutive serial numbers they are the version 1's. I am looking for $700. I am in Fredericksburg Virginia and about 10 minutes off I 95 so it's pretty easy to get to my house. Local pick up only. Best way to reach me is email tinpanatmedotcom
  11. I have a couple pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers that are collecting dust. If you are in the Washington DC area these are some nice classic heritage speakers. Pics are here: http://public.fotki.com/Tagginbac/stuff/page57.html pics begin on the page linked above and continue to the next page Light color HBR finish with the cane grills. They are a little knocked around but still look and sound very nice. One corner has a ding, one of the cane grills is coming undone, but still presents well. It's nice enough I didn't think they needed to be redone.Made in 1985, consecutive serial numbers$400 obo Dark color HBR finish but it looks like someone later added a nice walnut stain. They came out very nicely. There is one chip in the veneer, but you can't even see it unless it's pointed out. Made in 1985 $425 obo
  12. That's too bad it didn't work out for you on your first attempt. I have the CF-3's version 1. When I got mine they didn't have any ports in them and they sounded, well...mhew. Eventually i read bout these calling for 6 inch ports, unable to find any I did locate 4 inch ports and installed them. That is when the bass showed up. Originally I had these on a Carver TFM 15 and later on a Yamaha receiver. After I got the ports installed I also acquired a Sunfire 600 x 2 amp. I biwired the current source to the mids and tweeter section and the voltage source to the woofers. The speakers sounded unbelieveable. I didn't even need a sub with that set up. Currently I am running these with a pair of Carver Cherry 260 tube amps. The sound is ridicilous, bass one of the best I have heard. In hind sight these speakers didn't perform well on an integrated receiver. They need power. If you aren't experiencing the wow factor with these then I would suggest something is not in order. I'm in Fredericksburg VA if you are local you are welcome to stop by.
  13. I have a really nice pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers for sale. They are the HBR finish but it looks like someone later added a nice walnut stain. They came out very nicely. There is one chip in the veneer, but you can't even see it unless it's pointed out. Nice opportunity to pick up a nice classic pair of speakers. 14. I think you and I listen to similar music. Here's a play list I am listening to right now: Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Eva Cassidy- Live at Blues Alley When Sunny Gets the Blues- Charlie Rouse You Haven't Done Nothing Yet- Jen Chapin Nick of Time - Sunny Sumpter Alberta- Whop Frazier Mellow Saxaphone - Chuck Brown Fish Out of Water- Lhasa Black Sheep - Martin Sexton - Live Wide Open Moon River- Jacinta 11:11 - Rodrigo & Gabriella Are you familiar with any of these guys? I had a Bottle Head 2A3 and I auditioned a bunch including Audio Note, Synthesis, Deja Vu and Border Patrol. I also listened to a few 45 I just didn't hear the sweet spot untill I heard an Audio Notes 300b amp. That's when I heard the sweet spot. I use these amps on Lowther full range drivers and a couple Altec A7 and EV horn systems I have. I am a die hard Klipsch nut like everyone on here. My other allegiance is to Lowther full range drivers, although the Altec A7 VOTT is the best sounding speaker on SET amps I have. I know a lot of folks here swear by SET amps on Khorns, I just don't see it. Mine seem to prefer push pull amps like an EL 84. The 300b would produce more bass than a 2A3 and it wasn't enough to drive that woofer. Khorns have such sweet bass I don't think that can be over looked. And btw you are cheating if you are using a subwoofer on your SET amp ..lol. Shhhh... I won't tell anyone.[]
  15. Thanks Cut throat, funny, I didn't like the 2A3 but love the 300b. So, you are using a sub with your Khorns, interesting Thanks Tinpan
  16. " I am down to about 3 for my Khorns now. All SET amps. a 45, 2A3 and a 300B." Colin, I'd like to hear a little bit more about your experience with SET amps and Khorns. I tried 2 different 300b AN kit amps and I didn't see much in the way of bass. I did when I put a Carver EL84 push pull amp on. Interesting
  17. Or you could look at a Rythmik Sub. That's what I use Atta boy on getting the Lascalas, great choice
  18. I am using the Caver VTA 20 to driver my Khorns. I have all of my music ripped to AIFF on a NAS, but it could be a PC or Mac. I also have a wireless network and I use the Sonos as a wirelss music connection to my NAS. It aso serves as a preamp. Here's a close up of the amp and Sonos controller. Very clean set up, high WAF factor Here's an earlier shot with a different set up, but you can kick back in your favorite sofa or in my case chair and use the Sonos wireless controller to serve up your favorite playlist. There are many ways you can go, vinyl ( requires a preamp and phono stage) CD's ( you have to get up and change them and you probably need a preamp) , but for what you described, this is my concert hall. I bought these Khorns to flip and I tried a few different amps that just didn't work right on these Khorns. When I put the Carver on there it screwed up my whole house. I had to move the A7's a 300b set up to a different room and that made me move my Lowthers and so on.These Khorns and this amp are so nice I decided to keep the Khorns. This is the only corner I have in the house so that's why they stayed there. Even my SET buddies like this set up and acoustic oriented music sounds wondeful. Very minimum type set up but the sound is just there.
  19. Hands down one these: http://www.bobcarver.com/vta20s.asp I have two of them, one of them is driving my khorns and is the first amp I have tried that makes the bass sound like its supposed to
  20. Cool, thanks, that is exactly the information I was looking for. I thought these were worth a little more than the normal 20 year old Lascala price. He started at $3,500 a few weeks ago on CL and recently dropped to $2,250, so he isn't far off. I didn't want to pop his bubble and tel him $1,000 or $1200 if I wasn't sure. Thanks again Tinpan
