  2. You were not alone, m00n! He went by "gangstarock" and started two threads with a total of three posts. Fortunately, no one bought his act and all took him to task as an unwanted species. Some of the posts protesting his invasion of this Forum were quite well done! It's good to see members of the Forum sticking up for "our" Klipsch community... and better yet to see our Webmaster Guardian has not lost his grip on the cyber-weed wacker! -HornEd
  3. If you mean, ygmn, do I agree that WDST speakers should remain in the marketplace for special situations... yes, not only do I agree with it but I have dozens of posts over the past three years that explain why. The part that I don't agree with is his suggestion that I am in a "camp" that would hold that there is only one monopole solution for all cases... that would be absurd. Do I think that, given a reasonable acoustic environment, that monopole surrounds will far outperform WDST surrounds in seamless and faithful reproduction of modern DVD's and multi-channel music? You bet I do... and so do the legion of Forum folk who have happily altered their listening areas to take advantage of my experimentation. In respect to an always rising to the occasion m00n and a host of others, I am getting out of the personal attack business on this Forum... although it does rankle me to have irresponsible drivel sanctimoniously tacked on to Forum questions... particularly newbies questions. -HornEd PS: If you come by your TauRus astrologically, you might like to know that I am a Taurus with a Taurus ascending. I am sure that will prove that I am a whole lot of "bull" in certain quarters.
  4. You might also thing about an RC-35 because the center channel configuration flanks the horn with a pair of cones whose angles will cover more of the sweet spot with less distance from the speaker. Horizontally mounted "bookshelf" speakers provide better monopole surround coverage. More later... -HornEd
  5. Whoa, fini, it's a good thing for him you are a master woodworker... and while you might make a cartographer it's not likely you will be one! -HornEd PS: Call C&S Shotgun & DitDah Supply... before you half-dome yourself out of a phat sale.
  6. Hmm, that'll separate the Garrards from the Fishers! -HornEd

  8. Ah, yes, after the Klipschorn was conceived in Hope... and is still being cloned a half-century later... tends to give those of us who have indulged in the ultimate "monopolistic" horn-loaded icon a sense of having "listened with the ear of God!" -HornEd PS: From ancient times in the middle east, perfection in writing was expressed as, "written with the finger of God"... well, the metaphor has been paraphrased to express various perfections... and certainly fits the epiphany of one's first properly set up Klipschorn experience. PPS: I'd like to comment on the license plate but I've given up trolling for Bass Ackward Audioviles. PPPS: Don't forget to corner your Khorn opportunities. All my best to your family... especially your gastronomically talented mother-in-law!
  9. The way to a troll's heart is to give him/her an in-kind response. Letting a troll know that we know he/she is one builds our camaraderie... and helps summon the Klipsch minions to remove the stench. -HornEd

  11. TauRus wrote: "Apparently, the truth as usually happens does not lie in either camp. There are situations when dipole/bipole/quadropoles/whatever-poles would be preferred to monopoles, and vice versa." Apparently, TauRus, you have not read many of my posts over the years... for if you would have, you would have known that recommending WDST speakers to cure acoustic, space or taste limitations. I believe t2k deserves his SP-6 fixation and has the right to spray his own ears... and toot his horn tweeter about it. But, his "a$$holier than thou attitude" toward my research... research that has helped many on this Forum of a wide variety of persuasions... tends to undermine my high regard for this Forum. I agree that there are many worthwhile audio insights in this thread... and I tried to provide some of them adjusted to the perceived needs of serious participants. But I fell into the big mouth bass trap of having my chain pulled in a way that limited socially redeeming value to the response. In past years, HornEd posts have brought well reasoned calm to many a flaming thread. I have let one person's vitriol sour my good natured Forum fun and knowledge/opinion sharing. And that is not fair to the many Forum friends and Klipsch employees that have exchanged so much of value over nearly three years. If I am to continue to post on this Forum, I must learn to ignore the routine "HornEd baiting" rhetoric that seems to be Keith's compulsion. I thought a little Forum humiliation might cause t2k to allow me to freely express my opinion on subjects not about him and for t2k to express his feelings about subjects other than me... but the comments of others on this thread show that didn't work either. I shall endeavor to consider the source and ignore further vulgar posts by t2k about HornEd and "sour grapes" remarks about audio experiments that seek to share audio truth as I know it. There are a lot of good apples in this Klipsch barrel... and I thank those who have helped me avoid being another rotten one. -HornEd

  13. Thus spake the bipolar cowherd Keith, "I'm tired of responding to your elementary bull. Sorry, big t2k guy, I did not mean to challenge your educational level by pushing you up to elementary... no wonder youre tired! You think your tired... the rest of us are laughing so hard we need a break. So, do the Forum a favor, don't respond! -HornEd
  14. I've met fini and he is definitely a ladies man... why I've been told that he lives with a whole houseful of sweet young things! And after living in France for years, I have some define "French Maid" audio experiments. As for having my Swiss Miss cavort about the house in a French Maid's outfit... I think I'd rather watch her race up and down this mountain as she does now naturally. I'm having a bulldozer clearing the trails so I can keep up in my all terrain modified gas golf car. I mean if she's keeping up with my Klipschorns, I gotta find a way to keep up with her. She used to be a marathon runner... hmmm, no wonder she caught me so easily! -HornEd
  15. Oh, the Mug (m00n) Shot of course! Maybe a little programmer chic with a shot of the earth in space and m00n's head shining down in reflected glory. Or even m00n as a direct radiator... a head shot with a burning candle affixed atop to show the m00n as a unique source of illumination. With your skills, m00n, not even the sky is the limit! Thanks for being here. -HornEd
  16. And in his sagacity, t2k opined, "The only way to avoid relection is to live on a cloud." You got me, Keith, I thought you may be living in a cloud... but what is it you are trying to get "relected" to... I didn't know that you had been elected Forum Dictator. Checked out your reasoning in the round room... bit the good news is that your reasoning wasn't circular. Seems it tests out as a downward diffusion spiral. I know that you believe that big mains, little centers and side sprayers with mostly different woofers, tweeters and such, and all different cabinet volumes can find peace when ears are inundated with a mess of diffused sounds... and you can go right on "relections"... but upon reflection, maybe you can clear your head and edit your post so we can have a clue about what you really mean! Peace should not be diffused! -HornEd Thanks, Keith, I needed a good belly laugh today!
  17. Clipped & Shorn scribbled, "Meanwhile, I am comparing dipole designs..." Hmm, is that the answer to the age old question of, "Why did the surround sound speaker guru cross the road?"... or are you hamming it up on antenna designs? -HornEd
  18. My vote also goes for DTS... although Dolby seems to be creeping up. IMHO, the key to great HT is having a front array that has a center equal to the left and right mains. I have run tests on the Gladiator battle with Dolby and DTS... and with the factory recommended center and the HornEd "horizontalized" main for a center... and the superiority of DTS becomes far clearer when you have your best speaker in the center! =HornEd PS: The second key is 121.5 dB @ 20 Hz... and that takes quite a subwoofer array!
  19. Georgie... how right you are! After decades of looking (and sampling) the joys of extended togetherness (sometimes with license)... I had given up hope... and started building over-the-top Klipsch experiments. Suddenly, a sprightly redhead who had been guests (along with about 40 others including her boyfriend!) to a screening of a new DVD... She made it a point to introduce herself and express her thoughts on the theater. Over the next six months, she magically appeared one place or another... often just about meal time in the restaurant of my mountain retreat. Then, one evening she called her boyfriend to say that she would be staying with me. We are to be wed on May 2, 2004. I am in the process of building another over-the-top Klipsch experiment... Kassandra (my fiancé) went with me to pick up another pair of Klipsch Belles... it was her first time to hear a Heritage. The next week, Kassandra went with me to see about buying another pair of Khorns and a Belle for $2k. After an audition, I pronounced them adequate... and she whipped out her check book and bought them for us. What else could possibly be a finer verification of the right person for the likes of old HornEd? =HornEd How sweet it is!
  20. Avman, you are 100% correct! As I understand it, the KLF-C7 was a different design that was pressed into service as a Legend center rather than a speaker that was designed from scratch to match. Before building my Legend Theater, considerable time was spent in research... including phone calls to Klipsch. Sadly, the design engineers who did the Legend series were long gone from Klipsch when I made the inquiry... but Trey Cannon was invaluable in his assistance. It was my dissatisfaction with the KLF-C7 to meet the task of being the primary HT speaker that led to the technique for changing the motorboard to provide maximum benefit as a center. From there, it was just a natural thing to modify the three KLF-30 rear array to be idealized monopole surrounds. In the current set up, the room is circular and 30' in diameter. The front array is flat and the rear array speakers are attached to the curved walls at about 5'. Now for the KLF-C7 part... the timbre difference between KLF-30's and KLF-C7's is so great that I only use the KLF-C7's as Front Effects speakers... and at that they are excellent! They are mounted about 5' on either side of the KLF-30 Mains at the same height as the rear array. The RC-7's do very well as surround speakers because they are mounted horizontally... and that makes a wider array to cover more of the sweet spot. For example, if m00n would note the taper of the cones on his RC-7 and then extend a line from the taper of the left hand woofer to the other side of the room... and then extend a line from the taper of the right hand woofer to the other side of the room... he would be able to visualize the zone of ideal coverage. Doing the same to an RC-7 on the other side of the room and then a third RC-7 in the back of the room will create an overlapping area of complete rear array coverage that should include three rows of seating. Of course, the speakers should be set up with an SPL meter and a set-up disk (preferably Avia) to assure maximum advantage for the money and effort that went in to building such an ideal theater. Avman, you, moon and I, have the pleasure of having outstanding home theaters we share not only our info with our fellow Forum folk but also our desire to build something better and that means admitting where are shortcomings are. And, even if we get something just about perfect there is always that desire to go one more step. I am glad that Klipsch has a place for people like us people who want to chase my hero, Q-man, to the pinnacle of Klipsch Theatre Sound with the crisp honesty that only monopoles can fully achieve in light of current DVD technology.. HornEd PS: ygmn you are right of course voices seldom come out of the rear arrays but when they do they will be clear enough demand your attention. The RC-7s have a tapered array that shuts down one woofer when frequencies in the human vocal range are detected. The idea is to have more intelligible speech. But since, as you correctly pointed out, human voices are rarely heard from the rear array, both woofers are working full time and the full benefit of their horizontal spread over the sweet spot makes them ideal surround companions to the RF-7 in smaller width rooms. The ideal Klipsch Reference Theater IMHO would be to have seven R-7s with only the right and left mains mounted vertically. The R-7c center would be horizontal with a woofer tight by either side of the Tractrix Horn. The R-7s surrounds would also be horizontal with a woofer tight by each end and the Tractrix Horn in the center. That would create the closest timbre-match, create a tighter front center audio image and provide the widest surround coverage for a home theater sweet spot. Or so my experiments would indicate. Thanks, ygmn, for your timely concern. H.E.
  21. Max, my friend, I remembered our correspondence from a few years ago... including the acoustic challenges of your listening area... and the potential for building marble Heresy replicas. On seeing your positive sig line and remembering your floor plan... I was moved to do a little Athenian "daydreaming" (actually middle of the night here) on your behalf. -HornEd
  22. Max is right on as usual... and from his disclaimer in his sig line... I expect his "jealous as hell" statement to be refuted tomorrow by a Khorn acquisition to fit his magnificent new living space. (Oh well Max, I can dream good audio thoughts for you and yours can't I?) From the lovely quilt on the wall... it doesn't seem like that room is a TV place and once the Khorns are properly tucked in, you ought to have two-channel joy that will make C&S drool uncontrollably. I am proud of you and especially proud of your wife and daughters for supporting the man they so admire. The bonus is that once tucked away, those big ol' horns will delight them for years on end. Sometimes courage brings really nice things into your life and those whom you love best. -HornEd PS: I hope C&S gets a shot of your ear candy as compensation for his dit dah shotgun services. PPS: Pierce, I feel the excitement of your Khorn anticipation. For my sixteenth birthday I bought, with funds earned from odd jobs, a used Oldsmobile from an elderly fellow and a used Klipschorn from an original beatnik who got in a financial bind in San Francisco's North Beach area... home of the original Beat Generation coffee house crowd. Believe it or not, I was far more stoked about having the horn-loaded monaural jewel than I was the mobility of the car. Lots of 16 year olds score a car... but damn few had a Khorn just six years after it was patented in Hope, Arkansas. The Khorn didn't disappoint me... and you have the opportunity to double the fun that I had in my youth. Enjoy!
