Nice. I have never played around with a dynamics expander in a hifI system.   If implemented correctly without having a sound signature of its own, I can see the usefulness of such a device.

DBX has none IF you have a good ear and learn to set it just right. Some find it easy, some take a while. In my case I've used them so long if an adjustment is needed it's a matter of no thought and just doing it. In most cases I already know what I want and when it's off I recognize it immediately.

I just wanted to say and I hope it makes sense, it definitely makes recordings sound different. But it is an improvement not an impediment. And if adjusted properly it is subtle. But to me that means it has a sound signature.

I still have my original 117 and it still works great. 4BX in my main system. I can hardly listen to LPs without one unless they are in the top couple of percent of pressings, and even then they will be compressed unless it's chamber music or something of limited dynamic range to start with.

As mentioned, I think it sad no one has brought this wonderful tech back for the modern resurgence. Once you have one and learn to set it properly, there is no going back. I keep hoping someone will duplicate the functions in realtime software. It would be nice for stuff on music servers.

If I were a DSP wizard I would pursue this. I've got the chops for the analog I/O but not the DSP. What a fun learning experience it would be.

I understand trust me.  Sarcasm.   Strong work on the mods. What were the results?

Taking first unit back home tonight, it appears to perform on bench as envisioned. I'll hook back into system over 3 day weekend(yea). I am suspecting it will behave just as before except now its got balanced I/O as an option.

  4. Well the first unit is done and passed the smoke test last evening. Now to run some tests.

Added balanced inputs using Jensen line input transformers, balanced outputs matching the impedance on pin 3 of XLR with the impedance on pin 2. Balanced or unbalanced operation is selectable by rear panel switch. Another rear panel switch selects mono/stereo operation. I did not want to have to add a Y cable externally to get the level detectors to work in single channel mode. Added nice gold plated RCA connectors for the unbalanced main I/O. I really do not care about the tape loop RCA connectors(who uses that sheet anymore?) so I left them as is. Also added DC power inputs so I can run unit from a remotely located power supply(I hate transfomer hum)

I did this in the late 70's with my original pair of Khorns. I mentioned this to Paul W. Klipsch, the day I met him. Let's just say he didn't pull out a Bullshit button, but he was NOT convinced and told me so without harsh words. So I moved on to another topic.

Yea but did he try it?...there are way too many papers on acoustics that suggest ( I hesitate to use the word prove) that what people claim to hear when drivers are time aligned are really hearing something. You yourself know this of course ClaudeJ1.

Okay, after getting a deli meat lover's pizza, I topped it with the usual (olives, shrooms, sausage, bacon, tomato, cheese and shuch) but I have a tough time with the cheese falling off of the side(s). Oh well, I got over it.

    Connecting other speakers in series?

Parallel. You can hook your amp output to either of the inputs and then daisy chain the other connector to another speaker. You will increase the load(decrease the impedance) that your amp is working into.

They should teach their children to be good human beings -- mainly by modeling good behavior, empathy, and thoughtful citizenship.

Respect for authority can be overdone.  Teaching respect for fellow human beings, including those we disagree with, and doing them, the nation and the world a favor by engaging in dialog while listening carefully, and speaking thoughtfully, rather than staying quiet, would be good.  Children should be helped to be analytical.  They should be helped to use rationalism, empiricism (including science), follow up on intuition, maintain openness (one of the ancient definitions of faith), and to evaluate authority.

I respect authority mainly. Being in "trouble" just ain't worth it. After all this is a temporary situation we're all in here. But when the "authority" are doing things that are unethical, immoral and possibly illegal(in my humble estimation) I question their authority.

It's not the unions.  It's not the teachers.  It's not the government. It's the parents not teaching respect for authority and overall not teaching their children how to be good human beings.

My Mom always said she tried and tried but her children all ended up being human beings anyway:)
