do I wait for the LS to run in a few hours get used to the lack of punch (perhaps add a sub at some stage although researching this seems a mixed bag) and appreciate all thats amazing or do I return them (limited time to do so)

a subwoofer will enhance the AL-5 or a Cornwall , subwoofers compliment all Klipsch speakers , but not all subs are equal ,  some are better

    Hello,

Have had a pair of Klipsch Heresy HWO’s for about 40 years.

Serial #172Y421. Anyone confirm what year these were made?

In 2021 I spent $280 to spruce them up…terminals replaced, caps replaced, pull out crossover.

They still sound great to me with an old NAD 3155 amplifier.

Anything else I need to do to speakers to maximize sound quality?

Are there different versions of Heresy…3 or fours? Do they sound better than my old HWO’s?

To maximize the sound quality of the 1983 HWO .

    - swap the K-53 for the K-55V 2 inch voice coil drivers

    - 2  plastic threaded 1 -3/8 horn adapters for the K-401 midrange horns

    -  Klipsch  / JEM capacitors for the crossovers with an E network configuration , if you want the Klipsch sound signature .

I personally doubt the tag can be read as Oak Clear . Btw , your speakers are spectacular  .

I believe the tag should be read as " Oak Lacquer " , or OL , it is the person's hand writing which gives the impression of the letter C although it's really the letter L with a rounded shape  .

The kllipch Belle with oak veneer were available in the oiled oak which is OO , the historical reference lists Klipsch Belles oiled as OL which is a typo ,

    - the second option , is OL or , oak lacquered and yes  , lacquer is a light clear coat .

How feasible would it be to sand the cabinets to get them back down to raw birch?  Are there products that could strip a finish?

The Cornwall plywood has an outer birch ply   - 50-50 mineral sprits with steel wool super fine 0000 can remove some of the dark stain , apply with the grain of the wood  , once you can no longer remove any stain with the steel wool , clean the surface with a wet cloth with dish soap ,  let it dry for a few days ,  sand with 600 grit   .

  7. one small correction .

-the Heresy 1,5 never existed officially   ,but the informal designation refers to a Heresy 1 with a  K-77 ferrite tweeter , a Klipsch made K-53-K mids driver mounted onto a K-701 composite horn with either a K-22 or a K-24 woofer + an E-2 network  .

    - the Heresy 1 refers to a Heresy 1st gen with the K-77 Alnico or ferrite  tweeter  , a K-55V ( Atlas ) or a K-52H mids driver ( Hepner )  mounted on a K-700 cast horn  + a K-22 woofer ,  the crossover version can be the E or E-2  .
