  1. Quote: "30 tube watts will allow your Cornwalls to plaster you to the rear wall" So Err- uhmm - the AQ1003 should light up my 30's <GRIN> ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  2. I am eagerly awaiting delivery of my Antique Sound Labs AQ1003DT having auditioned it along with the absolutely amazing Wave-8's. The deciding factor was that a a pair of Waves and a preamp came in at about C$200.00 less than the AQ1003DT and the 1003 offered a somewhat richer sound due to it's nearly quadruple power output. That said - I suspect that a lot of people who should be auditioning the waves will not because they will assume that a tube amp at U$119.00 must be a POS,(just as they would assume a U$750.00 30w/ch tube amp must be junk) - They would be wrong on both counts!! The sound stage on the AQ1003 is broad and deep. Localization of vocalists and instruments was extraordinary without any trace of the notorious "Stereo" effect. What was on the left was there because it was --well errr -- on the left "in the wild" as it were - as opposed to sounding as if the drums for example were placed there by the producer or recording engineer. Contrary to what many "experts" will tell you - you can get solid base from a tube amp. That amp was damned near rattling the windows on some (very decent) 92 db. speakers and I confirmed that there was no subwoofer tucked into a corner somewhere being driven by a high power amp. What I listened to was Willie Nelson and a small backup group. At no time was I listening to the amp,(except when I was listening for it). One of the hallmarks of this amplifier is that even though I was auditioning it with an eye to purchasing it - I frequently found myself wandering off target and simply enjoying the music and the performance. Bottom Line ?? - With any luck at all I will have it on Friday <GRIN>. P.S. This amp had been reviewed by Ultra High fidelity magazine and been well received but an essentially identical unit,(PAK i11) from Passion Audio Kits,(built in the same factory in China),had received a higher rating because it had better O/P transformers,(superior core), and attenuators,(ALPS,)- Which the reviewers clearly stated provided superior performance (albeit at a significantly higher cost). The current version of the AQ1003 DT features higher quality O/P transformers and ALPS attenuators. I can confidently state that the purchase of either an Antique Sound Labs AQ1003DT or a Passion Audio Kits i11K is money well spent for the audiophile without bottomless pockets.(Don't lose sleep over the fact that your new $750.00 amp sounds better than your buddy's $7000.00 per channel super monoblocks and $12000.00 preamp - He still has braggin' rights - Just ask his Mortgage and Loan Company ! <GRIN> AKA Give the Antique Sound Labs and Passion Audio Kit lines a listen. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE) This message has been edited by lynnm on 10-10-2001 at 11:35 PM
  3. Is it possible that your amp's protection circuit is kicking in ? Check your connections to ensure that you don't have a stray strand of wire shorting across the terminals at either the speaker or amplifier end. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  4. Take a look at this post. I don't know how accurate the cost you were quoted is but I think it sounds about right: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000162.html ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  5. Hello boomer9911 I hope you are able to sleep well at night considering what you paid for your first set of KHORNS. Those HORNS,(one capitalises when referencing Deities Old Boy!!)are even more efficient than my K30's thus I sure as Hell know where the name Boomer comes from!! My wife has chewed my hindmost parts about being able to hear them from a block and a half away when I have been driving them with a relatively small amount of power,(admittedly with a huge reserve available for peaks <HUGE GRIN> - They want it - I've got it I am not given to spiteful comment and if anyone says that I said I hope you blow an eardrum with those,(Wait for it!! Wait for it, Chorus of Angels HORNS -- Well dey nebber heard them before!! ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  6. The problems with duct tape are that it might grip too strongly and cause a tear when you removed it and would be likely leave behind a tacky residue causing your sub to grow a beard of dust bunnies over time. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  7. I second the "masking tape" suggestion. As pointed out the "dome" is nothing more than a dust cover,(a word of caution about tweeters: Some tweeters use the surface of the dome to focus the sound waves and the resulting sound may be affected by such damage). That said, your sub-woofer's sound should not be compromised by this injury. Buy a good quality roll of masking tape such as produced by 3M,(GOD you don't know it hurts to recommend a name brand household product - next I'll be saying that Saran Wrap is better than the NoName versio--Err Umm actually). AKA the 3M stuff is better suited than most for this task as it grips better and more evenly than others. I have never been a proponent of poking holes into any part of a speaker assembly as there is the,(admittedly small),chance of dust getting past the dust cover and into the gap between the magnet pole and the voice coil. If you have already employed that suggestion you should not lay awake nights because it would be necessary for a lot of dust to get into that area before there would be any noticeable effect and you are unlikely to have more than a miniscule amount of dust get in from such a small hole even with years of regular use. I Know!! can be such a nit-picker - Look there's a nit over there and one in my navel,(I was gazing again - Damn the doctors said If I only took those pills .... ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE) This message has been edited by lynnm on 09-25-2001 at 09:19 PM
  8. Bummer Dude !! I suggest replacing both drivers with a properly matched pair as been suggested by a respondant in another post. In any event you are only a few hundred bucks away from audio heaven! Those La Scalas are gorgeous and might even make Bee Gees disco stuff listenable ---Err Uhmm NAAAAAH!! ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  9. Thankee Folks!! I went to Home Depot and bought a 12x12 tile of granite about 5/16" thick and had it cut into 4"x4" pieces. I then drilled a small depression into each one and used "Fun Tac",(Same idea as BlueTac),to glue the squares to the floor. At first I was a little disappointed because it seemed that I had lost some bass but the more I listen - the more I like the change. I also made some isolators to place under my CD player,(sacrificed an old rubber mouse pad) and realised a further major improvement. The strange thing is that everything except The Bee-Gees disco stuff sounds great - even their non disco stuff. Do you think I need a new amp? ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  10. I agree with the suggestion that you consider building your own machine using an AMD CPU. If you elect to go the pre-built route a couple of recommendations: Avoid the following like the plague - Hewlett Packard Pavillion Compaq Presario Emachines Tiny PC (A popular brand in the UK) HP's and Compaq's (other than the model series mentioned above)are worthy of consideration. The Presarios and the Pavillions are highly proprietary and can be extremely expensive to upgrade. They also jam way to much stuff into cases that are way too small and tend to overheat and are also, because of the case size, a proper pain in the patoot to work on. Emachines are extremely inexpensive but are prone to failures related to the fact that in order for the manufacturer to meet its low price target a lot of corners need to be cut. That said,Emachines can be good value for some users so long as they have reasonable expectations regarding performance and reliability. If you do not feel comfortable about building your own computer buy a prepackaged machine - subject to my comments above - which has a minimum of memory and then have a computer shop upgrade the memory. Why? - Because the price of RAM is extremely low at present and most computer shops will include installation in the price or charge only a nominal fee for the instalation. Major makers on the other hand will offer to sell you a PC that has been upgraded from 64 Mb. of RAM to 128 Mb. of RAM for about US$ 100.00 I recently bought 3 128 Mb. RAM modules to install in a customer's PC's for a total of C$ 105.00,(C$1.00 about US$ 0.70). A good option is to find a good mom and pop type computer store and have them build you a machine. The cost may be slightly higher than buying something like a Presario or similar but you will wind up with a PC that is superior in performance and upgradeability. The odds are however that you will spend less and get more. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  11. That looks like a RAM issue to me: Have you tried reseating the RAM? If you have access to different RAM I would suggest trying different memory modules. I have seen diagnostic programs pass bad memory and incorrectly flag good RAM as being defective. Diagnostic software is generally pretty good but as I have said it is not infallible. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  12. I hate to confirm the bad news but yes that is entirely possible. I am curious about your using the plural "speakers" - Are you having this problem on a pair of speakers or on only one unit? The centre pole problem could occur because of a severe physical jolt to the speaker such as having been dropped or perhaps having been whacked by a forklift in the warehouse etc. or might be the result of a manufacturing defect such as a bad weld or a bad press fitting as the result of uneven pressure from a press. Has this speaker ever worked for you? ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  13. I got to thinking and it occurred to me that perhaps your video card may be intermittently radiating excessive heat onto the CPU. This would not be evident to the temperature probe on your motherboard unless you happened to check right at the point that the video card was going thermonuclear. Try moving the video card as far as possible from the CPU. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  14. LOL I got lucky for once!! My dealer had only one pair of KLF 30's available in mahogany and said he could supply them in oak but otherwise I was "stuck with the reds." My house is a 100 year old bungalow with Red Fir Floors and my coffee table and end table are finished in red mahogany and the trim on my sofa and chair are reddish brown. I whinged for about 0.3 seconds and said I would live with the "Reds" ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE) This message has been edited by lynnm on 09-14-2001 at 12:17 AM
  15. Damned if I can see how that would make a difference...but post back and let us know how it works. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)

  18. There are a number of excellent forums where you will be able to find help. Try these as a start: Http:\\www.virtualdr.com http:\\www.cybertechhelp.com http:\\www.helpfromtechs.com http:\\www.sharkyextreme.com http:\\www.google.com - (use support forums as your keywords) Good luck!! PS> If you are getting random reboots - Your PC is probably overheating. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  19. Hello Dere Spontaneous reboots are usually the result of excessive heat in the case. The following is some advice directly from AMD: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/cooling_guide.pdf The Athlons have a tendency to run hot.Your motherboard likely has a temperature monitoring utility. Check the documentation that came with your motherboard and CPU to determine the acceptable operating temperature range. As a rule of thumb try to keep the temperature below about 55 degrees C.That said I have seen them run up into the 70's and work well. Remember that the hotter the chip runs the shorter will be its life span. Check to make sure that your CPU fan is working properly and that the fan in your power supply is moving enough air. The interior of you case should also be free of dust bunnies. In addition, I recommend routing your ribbon cables etc. in such a way as to avoid restricting air flow across the CPU. If your PC is near a window ensure that there are no curtains or drapes up against the back of your PC obstructing air-flow. Always run the PC with the case cover in place as the cases are engineered to direct the airflow so as to maximise cooling. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  20. I have a recently acquired pair of KLF 30's. I cannot use the spikes as my listening room floors are 100 year old varnished Fir and I really want to stay married,(my wife as always is considering her options)! I thought that creating a pair of bases that the KLF's would stand on with their spiky little feet would improve their already fabulous sound.WRONG!! After about 3 hours of mucking about,(including finishing), I tried my KLF's. Obviously the 3/4" plywood platforms I so lovingly created damned near totally decoupled the KLF's from the house's structure and made them sound almost as good as the pair of bullhorns that a friend of mine tried to use for stereo speakers many moons ago. Suffice it to say that they are back on their silly little vinyl feet and will be staying there !! OK!OK! - I lied - anyone got a use for some really loud bullhorns ? ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  21. I second the suggestion that you try a different CD player. I have a pair of 30's and found them a little overly bright and somewhat harsh on occasion but then I picked up a Nakamichi CDP 2A CD player at a second hand store and they now sound much smoother. In addition, I notice that the sound is more defined. In other words instead of hearing a vocalist andapianoandatrumpetandabass I now hear a vocalist and a piano and a trumpet and a bass. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)

  23. I am still inclined to suspect that the problem was to do the signal to the speaker rather than the speaker itself. Generally speaking problems with speakers may be seen as being either mechanical,( eg. misaligned voice coils rubbing against the armature, torn cones, hyperexcursion causing speaker components to impact upon other devices in their forward or backward travel) or environmental,(eg. the speaker is operating in an environment which is incompatible - acoustically or physically with the speaker). In either of those events the problem is unlikely to be intermittent. If a speaker sounds like hello for either of those causes it will always sound terrible when the conditions that led to the poor sonic quality are replicated. The issues you describe are almost certainly related to the input signal. For speakers like computers the old acronym GIGO applies: Garbage In = Garbage Out. Keep us posted. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  24. Thank you all for the warm welcome !! If you ever need assistance with computer issues I can point you to a few great resources or perhaps offer a bit of one on one. I will not be the least bit shy about asking any of you for your input regarding audio. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
  25. I would be wary here!! The woodgrain surrounding the Klipsch label does not appear to match the plywood to which it is glued. In addition, the edges of the Klipsch label appear to have a "Selection frame" ie. a dotted line all around the supposed label. Last but not least the label portion of the photograph appears to be different in colouration than the backboard to which it is affixed. It may be that there are factors that would explain these issues. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca. 1304 BCE)
