  1. I wish I would have seen this sooner... I did a pretty involved project with these amps a couple of years ago.. Basically here is the skinny: 1) You need at least a 1amp capable power supply 2) The power supply cap is a joke... I replaced it with a 10,000uf cap (had to wire outside the case). This dramatically improved the available power for bass... prior to this there was hardly any. 3) Change the input coupling caps - I went with vintage PIO military caps. 4) Change the output inductors to quality toroidal models... 5) Bypass the internal trebel and bass controls - which also bypass the input stage op-amps, which also stops the power-on thump.. 6) Pull all associated, no-longer needed, componentry. I did a couple of youtube vids on mine... I'll see if I can find the posts that discuss all the required values for the caps and inductors. Here are my youtube vids... Sorry they are old and dark, I'll see about taking some pics... I was powering a pair of La Scala's with them and could blow you out of the room with little effort. This second video goes through the majority of the mods: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTZJeVKlh3w And this was the first video when I had only modified the input caps and power supply cap I believe:
  2. no fundage... If I had it, they would be mine - no doubt.
  3. Seller hasnt responded to my trade - but price was lowered in ad to $1k
  4. I'm actually in contact with the seller trying to broker a trade... Not sure if he will go for it... My Reference set for these.
  5. I posted up a trade feeler in the Garage sale area...
  6. I have a very clean set of RF3's that I'm interested in swapping for Heresy's... Anyone local (within an hour or so of SE Michigan) interested?
  7. Both actually - but I have a preference for 2 channel HD audio... thats the direction I'm moving... Planning on FLAC down the road...
  8. Wow... I had no idea about the PCB's in these guys... Glad all my amp and guitar projects had nice clean PIO caps with no leakage... I guess I wont be buying any more.. Thanks for the heads up!!
  9. Thats pretty much what I suspected.... Thanks guys!
  10. I'm basically giving these guys away... I need room (and cash) for more Klipsch goodness! Pics linked here: http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/ele/3720978941.html This is my ad... I have them hooked up to my main Marantz Sr5006 as the b-channel... very nice and laid back speakers. About as far from horns as you could get... hehehe... Everything is in great shape on these..
  11. 6.1 setup.... See sig... Infinity sub, unfortuately... but its doing its job for the moment... I can fit a second channel up front as a B-Set, which is the plan... My Marantz 5006 will do that quite happily... I have some of the funds, but they were earmarked for another project... but you know how it is, this vintage girls turn your head and you just cant look away! I'd likley side by side them with the RF3's for a while.... I'm just curious as to what to expect... I had La-Scala's previously - would you say they are more like them, or closer to the RF3's?
  12. As a Les Paul guy - PIO caps give LP guys that warm all over feeling.... aaahhhhh.... They are the grail in the vintage guitar world, next the vintage bumblebee's... Interesting to see the similar trend in my favorite speakers..
  13. There a few sets of Heresy's local to me - look like II's.... and Ive been tempted. Would it be worth looking into replacing my RF3 fronts with the Heresy's? If so, Why? I am really enjoying the RF3's, I just really really like the heritage line... and am looking for an excuse I think... But to do it I would have to sell the RF3's...
  14. Sorry for the ressurrect, but it would awesome for several members here to go together to this persons "challenge". I'd say - take a set of La-Scalas and NO amp - just run them off the headphone out of you iphone.... Probably still louder... hehehehe....
  15. Breaks my heart, but reality has set in... I just can't swing the refurb... too many competing hobbies and next to no disposable income... So - I just posted them in the Alerts.. I'm going to help the owner find a taker...
  16. I was going to pick these up, but any way I run it, I just cant afford the refurb. I have been in contact with the seller - and he was willing to give them to me for free since I'm so into Klipsch. I told him that I would help him find someone to take them. He has them listed on CL for $50, but I think he will give them away if you are planning a refurb and not trying to make money... he just needs space. They were DJ speakers, and the components were moved into another set. They are currently covered on the top and both sides with carpet... they are from the early 80's. He also has the crossovers - AL version he believes. If you are interested drop me a PM and I will get you his contact info.. Nice guy...
  17. Yuk Bruce - sorry your dealing with that - I know I'd be miserable if the wife had to be half way around the world!!! The eliptrac looks sweet - I was checking that out as well.. but out of my price range atm.. Good news on a couple of other fronts though - Bob got back with me lickety split... and he said to call klipsch again and find someone else who knows there stuff... so I'll call again... I also got a response from another gentleman who has a set of K400's and K55's at a decent price... Now I just have to get the cabinets and make sure they are solid enough to start this process..
  18. I'll send him an email... I already started send emails to folks who make aftermarket horns.. Thanks for the idea!
  19. Ok.. Lets try this a different way. Assuming you had empty cabinets and could go any way with horns / drivers... all while trying to keep it as cheap as possible.. What would you do? I'm open to a two way system as well... look at Selenium 2" Horns, I may be able to do a two way with crossover at 500hz... but not sure if the bass bin goes that high... from what I have read, the stock crossover is 400hz...
  20. No idea THe person I spoke to looked it up in the system and found the internal stock number for teh K-401, but showed none anywhere in stock... I'm confused, because, like you, I figured that since the LS-II is still in production, they would have them...
  21. Bummer.... I called Klipsch.. No dice on K-401's... they dont stock them anymore.. I'm putting feelers out - anyone have a beat up set? I'd love to do a Fastrack upgrade... but theres no way I can swing that at the moment.
  22. Sweeet!!!! Now I'm starting to get excited - I just spoke to the seller - his company has always owned these and they were used for DJing.. He has a set of Type AL crossovers he will throw in - saves me a couple hundred bucks... I'll just rebuild them. Its fun to learn some of the history on these old beasts - they are early 80's vintage.. pretty nice guy - He may buy our Churches old EV Sentry's that we arent using as well..
  23. I'm going to be doing a rebuild on some emtpy cabs and need parts... I have some other speakers that I can offer in trade. Polk RTA 12b's that I rebuilt the crossovers on - good condition and sound great. Sony SS-TL5 transmission line speakers - in very good shape - natural oak veneer. Very nice as well.. I'd be willing to give you both sets for some working parts... let me know what you have.
  24. Thanks guys! This will be a project over a number of weeks / months as I'm very limited on budget... I dont want to buy completed 'Scalas as that would be no fun! I'm thinking about doing the bass extension modification... Probably will use Crites Woofers... Possibly Crites CT125 tweeters as well, depending on how funding goes.. If I manage to get these cleaned up and looking / sounding good - they could possibly replace my RF3-II's as my fronts... the RF3's would go to fund the build. Not really sure how this is all going to pan out at the moment - the cabinets literally just fell in my lap. Planning to pick them up Sunday. As to crossovers - I'll likely build a set of Type A's to start with.. I think if I come up with around $4-$500 I can get this show started...
  25. Hi folks, It looks like I may be picking up a free set of LaScala cabinets... A local establishment just wants them out, so I'm going to do what I can to get them. I really dont have the funds for a rebuild, but I'm hoping I can do it over time... and this is too good a deal to pass up.. My question is this - I have found most of the parts for the rebuild - but I'm having trouble finding the Midrange horn assembly. I know I will need the K55 driver - but the only horn assemblies I see are from Heresey speakers... are they the same? Or is there an aftermarket horn that will work? Keep in mind I'm going cheap on these...
