  1. I know. Most of them do not even contribute anything, but they probably do that in life as well.
  2. I guess I won't get to 17.2k posts... oh well.
  3. I don't recall naming anybody's name. In addition, do you think I care if I get banned from a forum. I don't think so.
  4. We all are entitled to an opinion, but not entitled.
  5. Thank you for posting your measurements on the 18 x 10 horns.
  6. Yep. A joke of a human being and idiot.
  7. California is a beautiful state, but each state has its good and bad. I live 30 minutes (rural, but not too rural) from a big city away from the craziness. Love it.
  8. Skin-Effect is real and a lot of different types of wire have been used for speaker wire, but I believe stranded is the best. However, in this great hobby of ours, I would not be suprised if someone unrolled to separate rolls of aluminum foil and used that for a speaker cable.
  9. My impedance plot has a peak at 50Hz too, but the entire range is below 10 Ohms, so I'm not too worried about what amp I use to drive my LaScala's. I use both tube & SS.
  10. A polygon by any other name... However, turning it should still allow enough airflow thru the opening to let the enclosure "work".
  11. After reading all these good replies, no one should be confused about damping factor. Bottom line... Does it matter? Yes, but as soon as you insert the speaker wire and speaker into the output circuit of your amp (tube or solid state), the DF comes down to single digits (low double digits if you are lucky).
  12. Back in the early 80's, when I was not installing (car audio), I would hang out with the home audio guys and we would play T & F D minor on all the home speakers to "try them out". Only a few survived. Suprisingly, the Bose 901's sounded fairly decent. No super low bass, but you could hear everything.
  13. Try loading the ports to the rear next and see how that affects the low-end. May get better results.
  14. I am certain the K-402's will sound better, however, the cost difference is quite significant.
  15. Not yet, but now that you mention it, that will help.
  16. I prefer the Russian tubes after the USA NOS. Plus, I prefer vodka to fried rice.
  17. Yes, I have heard some of them, not all. However, in my opinion, new USA or European NOS small signal tubes are better than anything the Chinese are making today. The Chinese have definitely added "glamor" to some.
  18. Toccata and Fugue in D minor comes to mind. One of many favorites for testing speakers.
  19. Can you clarify this statement? You had your LaScala's sitting on top of the KP-480?
  20. Exactly, hence my statement. To keep growing and get to Pat's next goal, they need more sales.
  21. If I have given the impression I am against or do not desire a subwoofer, that is not the case. I started in the early 80's working in the car audio industry when it was in its infancy. Even though home audio was mature, nobody wanted to help or offer knowledge to the "car guys" because they thought we were nuts for wanting to put 10" and 12" woofers in the back deck or trunk of a car. T/S parameters were not known and a TRS80 or Commodore 64 computer sure wasn't going to spit them out. I spent many years building car audio systems that had extremely low (and loud) bass. It's actually easier in a vehicle with its small cabin and gain characteristics. Currently, I am contemplating my next subwoofer solution for my new basement layout.
  22. No, these are not the K510 clones, but the larger "generic" horns; 18 x 10. That is how they are listed. The PRV adapter below is what I am using, but they are ABS (only) and fairly soft, which you would expect. I think I'll get some aluminum ones since the PRV threads are already starting to get "boogered" up. That's a North Carolina term...
  23. It is a great combo. Glad your results are similar to mine.
  24. I've got the ZXPC 18 x 10 horns w/ K55v's on top of my LaScala's and they (k55V & horn) sound much more natural than the K400's. Typical audiophile adjectives that come to mind are more open, less veiled, less colored, etc. I know there are other horns out there that could be used, but for the money and sound quality, this ZXPC horn is a bargain and worth trying if you are in the market for a 400Hz mid horn. It has a thick casting and is fairly non-resonant. I mounted a JBL D250X on the ZXPC horn too and it measured great and sounds good as well.
  25. Claude, I fully understand what you are saying, but not everyone desires, wants or needs the latest and greatest. People love classic cars, even though a new Toyota Camry could probably blows the doors of some classic "muscle" cars in stock form. I could use a hundred analogies, but you get the point. A lot of people jump right into new technology, some are a bit slower (like me), but overall moving forward is the best option (in most cases it is not an option) unless you want to go the way of the dinosaurs.
