New to this page are the RB-35's still for sale or is this an old post? If they available I could be interested.

    Thanks

Sorry that I missed your question. They have been spoken for, but we haven't been able to meet yet. I should be able to let you know something within a week.

  2. Typically, I do my fishing at Kroger for both my fish and dates. I'm usually fishing for what's on sale in the clearance section. Sometimes I have to pay full price, but regularly I've been lucky in knowing when and where to go.

The last fish I ate was salmon seasoned with bourbon and brown sugar that I smoked on a charcoal grill.

Admittedly I know nothing about the Belle’s. Are they the same internals as the La Scala just a different box design?
How would they compare in sound? I haven’t ever been able to listen to a pair.

    First, welcome to the forum.

As you know, good advice is free, and bad advice is costly.
To make sure what is said will be of real help, there is a need to know the basic how, where, and why stuff. Simple info such as: the use (home theater, stereo (music), public address, just to p!ss off the neighbors, garage, etc); room size; have corners; married and do you want to stay married; budget; music you will be playing, etc. I started with the Heresy and I didn't slow down until I bought the MCM1900, which might be another reason I am not married, but I doubt it.

In case you don't know, the Khorn are the ones to get for full-range sound, 'if' you have corners for them and a large enough room. The LaScala and Belle are, respectively, steps down from the Khorn and both are strengthened by adding a subwoofer. The Khorn and LaScala have the same size mid-horn and the Belle uses a slightly smaller one. In the period that all 3 were being built, they all three used the same woofers and tweeters. This is not a one-shoe-fits-all hobby. Some owners like to keep things stock while others want to add the 402 on top of their LaScala and use active crossovers.

A few reasons I suggested the Belle is that: The Belle sounds great. The Belle are, unquestionably, the prettiest speakers ever built. They don't come along for sale very often, especially at an affordable price. There is a fellow forum member who is selling a pair. I embedded a link in my first reply, in case it was missed >this is a link that will take you to that page where you can see them, their prices, and the backstory<

When I joined this forum, there were a lot more members who gave me great advice. Feel free to ask any questions you have.

I must say I'm a bit sheepish in that I've forgotten some of my musical theory regarding what is considered a whole note and a half note and can't be quite as accurate as I should be.

Let me set out what I recall. Larry C. will be able to elucidate. He REALLY knows what is going on.

The frequencies on the notes of the piano shown state what is called modern tuning. A4 = 440 Hz. It was not always that way and sometimes you hear recreations of older tuning putting A4 down at 420 or so. Larry will know.

In getting from a given tone, to its octave (C1 to C2), you double frequency (A4 is 440, A5 is 880, and A3 is 220 Hz). That has always been the standard. The octave is 8 white keys up. Hence "octave" or 8.

What we're looking at in the diagram is called "equal temperment." This answers the question of (in numbers) how to increase the frequency of the notes going up the musical scale within the doubling frequecies of octaves.

If you count the black keys (sharps and flats), we see that it takes 12 piano keys to get to a doubling at the next "octave" which is doubling in frequency.

In equal temperment, we want the relative change of frequency in each of the 12 shifts to be equal - - - so we arrive at a doubling in frequency after 12 increments.

    What to do?

We're looking for a way of getting a number which multiplied by itself 12 times equals 2.

For example, if we wanted a number which when multiplied by itself once would result in 2, we'd take the square root of two on a calculator. That would be 1.414.

If we needed three multiplications,we'd ask for the cube root of 2.

So what we're looking for is the 12th root of 2. However, checking out the keys on our calculator . . . it is nowhere to be found, and we didn't find a cube root either. But most scientic calculators and spread sheets will raise an X to the power of Y, or X^Y.

We must now recall some high school math. Finding a root is the same thing as taking the exponent of the inverse of the root. That means we can punch in 2^(1/2) to get a square root of 2. If we punch in 2^(1/3) we get the cube root of 2.

And, if we punch in 2^(1/12) we get the 12th root of 2. That number is 1.059463.

Now, look at the frequencies of the black and white keys on the diagram. Each adjacent one increases by a multiple of 1.058463. If you have to go down from one, you divide by that same number. A4 = 440 Hz is the standard and all others fit in by the math.

So, Gil, what is the point?

As Larry C pointed out the step from 40 to 39 is less than that 1/1.0584 to make it a step down. And I implied it was about a half note. However, I'm disagreeing that a half note is the fraction he reported. I'm just not clear in what is considered a half note. I can only talk to frequency and notes on the piano and math.

In any event 40 to 39 Hz is not worth anything in frequency response if our speakers are like a piano.

    = = = =

I diverge here. Equal temperment is somewhat of a cludge from more ancient standards. In classical temperments, the third whole note note up from the fundamental is 1.25 of the frequency. The fifth whole note up is 1.5 of the fundamental. If you take a very close look at the equal temperment scale, they're off by a few percent.

Some of this comes to mind because of the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". There the scientist were attempting to communicate with the aliens with music. You hear comments of "up a third" or "down a fifth" or the like. I wonder which temperments were being used (equal or otherwise) and whether the aliens were using one or the other.

The truth is out there. Perhaps someone can explain music and temperments better.

    Gil

I sure do miss you posting here Gil.

    Yes you did.

I wonder if any of you know how the motor board is attached to the box?

I do not know how they are attached, nor would I remove them. I might be wrong, but I do believe that you will have a lot less trouble finishing them without removing them, let alone putting them back.

A man goes to church on Easter Sunday and returns home with two black eyes.

His wife asks him how he got the black eyes.

Man: Old Ms. Johnson was sitting in front of me during mass, when she stood up I noticed her dress was stuck in butt crack, so I reached out and gently tugged it out. She spun around, was really mad, and punched me in the eye.

Wife: That explains one black eye, what about the other one?

Man: I figured she must have liked her dress stuck up in her butt crack, so when she turned around I stuffed it back up there for her.

Finally if I converted the back panel to a 5 way post and wired for bi amp, would like reduce the resale value?

The 301 are ready to be bi-amped. There is a jumper wire inside that needs to be cut or removed. No need to fabricate anything.

  9. Hope that I don't offend anyone, it's only a joke.

Three lawyers and three engineers are traveling by train to a conference. At the station, each of the three lawyers buys a ticket while the three engineers buy only one ticket.

"How can the three of you travel on one ticket?" asks a lawyer.
"Watch and you'll see," answers an engineer.

Aboard the train, the lawyers take their respective seats while all three engineers cram into the restroom and squeeze the door closed behind them.

When the conductor comes around collecting tickets, he knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please." The door opens a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.

The lawyers are impressed with this clever idea. On the way home from the conference, they decide to copy the engineers' technique. At the station, they buy a single ticket for their return trip. To their astonishment, the engineers don't buy a ticket at all!

"How in the hell are you going to pull this off?" asks a lawyer.

"Watch and you'll see," answers an engineer.

They board the train. The three lawyers cram into one restroom and the three engineers cram into the other restroom.

Shortly after the train departs, one of the engineers leaves his restroom and knocks on the other restroom door. "Ticket, please!"

  10. Things people that were actually said in court, word for word:

Q: Trooper, when you stopped the defendant, were your red and blue lights flashing?
    A: Yes.
Q: Did the defendant say anything when she got out of her car?
    A: Yes sir.
    Q: What did she say?
A: What disco am I at?

Q: How far apart were the vehicles at the time of the collision?

Q: So the date of conception of the baby was August 8th?
    A: Yes.
Q: And what were you doing at that time?

  11. Most of my arguments with my wife usually end with "Don't Say, I know what you are thinking!" Obviously, I have a wife who can read minds.... The other day I did some stupid sh!t and got hurt (just some cuts and bruises), and she started yelling at me, "What were you thinking??!??!"

    I give up.

I agree, I do enjoy some of the old school people that pop up every now and then.

As you know, this forum used to be the go-to place for help. I'm not saying that there haven't been the periotic squabbles, but the tons of help from friendly people such as best practices for restoring cabinets; answering why my KLF30s were rattling; what Y does or doesn't sound best with what X; the members who worked with Klipsch to put the Pilgrimages together, and more. I bought my Belle, MCM1900, RB75, Forte, and many other speakers from fellow forum members, let alone an untold amount of money @opusk2k9 helped me spend.
Hopefully, someone will see what the problem is and turn things back around.

  13. I know that I will regret this, but I am offering my Heresy II Walnut Oil here for sale. I have owned them since ~ 2014 and have been impressed with their looks and I have enjoyed their sound. They have the ~ 1" risers, new seals, and new Jantzen capacitors. They are missing the back labels but one can see by the veneer that they are consecutively numbered. The cabinets are in good condition and the grills look to be flawless. Prefer local pick up or if need be, they can be shipped. <edit> P.S. Because this place used to be so helpful, I am offering them here first and will list them on FBMP later.

If it helps, I have plans to travel a loop from Lexington, Louisville (or Cincinnati), Indy, Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, and then home.

I did not mean to roll a grenade into this forum. Holy cow what just happened?

You did nothing wrong. There has been a troll who has crapped in countless threads and it had been tiresome for WAY too long. There is a little more to the story, but you had nothing to do with any of it.

I sent you a PM earlier. Did you see it?
