He´ s probably not that well known in the States/ Canada, but here on the old continent we kind of grew up with him.

Indeed he is very well known in Europe, especially to a bit older audience who watched his films.

I've found that any loudspeaker can be dialed-in over time to a room and listening positions, so getting equal time/effort in for each loudspeaker usually doesn't occur in these instances unless significant time with each is expended.

    Chris

I guess I could confirm that.

If a person is persistent dialing-in to a room could be done with more or less success, as I have experienced. When I purchased one set of used speakers, I have auditioned them first in the room of the person selling them. They sounded very good there.

Then I brought the same speakers to my much smaller room, and speakers being fairly large for my smallish square space, did not sound so good. I did not want to part with them, so I spent a few years changing their positions, experimenting with absorption and dispersion on the walls, bracing the cabinets and even updating crossovers. But with all that experimentation I have found that experimenting with positioning is worth the effort. I may not have the soundstage I would like to, but at least the speakers are now much clearer in their presentation and do not change much with the change in volume.

So it looks as if the only legacy "old" product you can still get is the XP-4080.

    Could just be so.

A year and a half ago I bought new XP3060.

It was just to be discontinued.

  4. Well, most of the gear I bought was on discount, not B-stock.

With a few exceptions that I payed full price 🙂

For example, my Beyers DT990Pro (250 ohm) were regular item on a local retailer shelf. Since it was sitting there for a long time, the shop decided to lower the price.

I usually seek such opportunities locally, where I ca try the item I am interested in. I don't have the nerve for shipping back and all the fuss.

  5. Keep working on it.

It is all good as long as there is fun in it. 🙂

I had an opportunity to listen the sound out of similarly designed speakers at audio show. Except the horn was Oris type and there were four open baffle bass drivers (two above the horn and two below the horn). The sound coming from horn itself was beautiful. Unfortunately the bass was not well integrated with the horn and there were serious deficiencies.

You are going to have to be careful not to feed this thing DC from a pre-amp, etc., but it would probably have to be broken to do that. Folks with loudspeakers without passive crossovers are going to have to take the most care because there's no capacitor to interrupt DC going to their delicate HF driver(s). I restored an old Crown DC300 to use on my bench to test woofers for rub & buzz and offset distortion experiments. One of the hassles with rub & buzz testing is the noise generated by the portion of the test that takes the driver near Xmax. What you can do with a DC amplifier is offset the driver near Xmax and then drive it with a much smaller signal AC test stimulus, then repeat using the opposite offset.

Which is what's gonna happen to your drivers without capacitors in series with them if you feed the NC400 with a mix of AC (music) and DC from a downstream component. Best case will be distortion, worst case.. Well you know.

Please explain how not to feed NC400 with DC from a pre-amp.

What to watch for, where and how to find parameters to avoid the worse?

  7. Hi Dave A,

is there any chance you could test the Super MWMs with the B&C DCX464 and ME464 in near future?

That would be really helpful for those that can not get their hands on K-402s.

  8. I was present at the Danley speakers/system presentation which wad held at the rock club. Closed hall, round or slightly elipsoid shape, maybe 30-40 meters diameter.

I mention this because an SPL meter was hooked up at the listening position.

85-95 dB was acceptable for listening.

When SPL meter reached 103 dB (may be a bit more but less than 110) briefly, the wooden pannels on the walls started to rattle and we could only endure it for a short period of time.

Where are you that getting K-402 sets are a problem? My understanding is Klipsch will sell you sets all day long. Replacement parts are an issue though if you are not an owner with serial numbers.

OK S-MWM #2 go for it! Mine has the 402 + 1132 driver and when you get done I can send you the Xilica file I use for mine.

    Europe.

I am in contact with Klipsch pro poeple and still waiting from them when a pair would be available.

K402s should come with the same driver as you got.

  10. Not a catastrophic but you should get the glasses to see well.

I am having much lower than that, and I usually drive without glasses just fine. Seeing numbers at the license plate on a car in front of me on autobahn is a problem, but who cares.

But when I want to see accurate the objects in the distance then I wear my glasses.

For example, viewfinders in my cameras are well adjusted for my right eye, which is also worse than my left eye.

However, you should wear glasses for one other reason and that is you could loose your sight much more rapidly then without them. At lest that is how my optometrist explained to me.

  11. Fishing just does not interest him in any way.

Smartphone is the source of many interesting themes and socializing with other mates.

If he had friends there on the lake involved in various activities of mutual interest, may be it would be a different picture.

As is, the smartphone is just more fun then staring into water and waiting for a fish.

Big question in my mind though ......Do you think the home market can really accept the size it takes to get  lower pattern control?

There doesn't seem to be any way to get around Keele's pattern control formula......making large size mandatory

Majority of home market probably not.

But there are always exceptions 🙂, which of course do not make money for the speaker companies.

As for me, I have decided to put a pair of SMWMs with K402 horns in my smallish living room, even my darling agreed to that. Bought the tools, Xilica is waiting in the closet for year and a half. Unfortunately it has been two years since I have been trying to get my hands on K402s through official dealership and otherwise, with no success.

  13. Producer from Norway.

    Pretty popular in Europe.

They have been around for some time. They have a reputation for a clean accurate sound with plenty of power for most home applications.

I never had a chance to listen a system with all Hegel components. But for a short listening session I used one integrated, actually just a pre-section of Hegel integrated when buying a Kenwwod combo Pre+amp. Wanted to make sure that Kenwood preamp is in a good condition.

Hegel produced just a bit cleaner sound with a bit more instrument separation, but that could be expected as Kenwood is 35 years old. 🙂
