  1. I still watch a few DVD's from time to time. I have many DVD box sets with full seasons of The Unit, Deadwood, Soprano's & 24, that I still drag out. There's a few movies that are still not out on Blu-ray yet, such as Brotherhood of the Wolf, my DVD copy still gets played. Luckily my player & display do a great job with up-conversion when needed. But, I've had Blu-ray & HD-DVD since 2006, & I always look forward to the next new release (edit: well... not with HD-DVD lol). I've probably been to the Movie Theater only once or twice in the past 10 years+, I prefer to watch a movie for the first time.... at home.
  2. No doubt an IB is a great approach to move some air with low distortion, but 2 completely different animals. Most Infinite systems require a custom wall, floor or ceiling install with many considerations for the baffle. Calculating free air volume/driver(s) ratios (10x Vas), displacement, venting, energy transfer & vibration to opposite rooms, Room EQ Planning for placement prior to construction/fabrication....etc. A free standing sub offers convenience & flexibility. Lots of good choices available to pair up with space & room size.
  3. This is always a good one. Great story. Great movie.
  4. I was looking at the FV15HP form Rythmik as well, pretty impressive. But right now (for my needs) still leaning toward the VTF-15 MK2 from HSU.
  5. Watching this later tonight. I swear you can burn calories just watching this fast paced, non-stop, adrenaline rush.
  6. People tend to view them as a toy, but the PS3 was/is a killer player. Sony actually lost money on every one sold. Those things are so powerful you can take several units and turn it into a supercomputer that will outperform some of the multi-million dollar setups. However, they went a step backwards with the PS4. They blocked the ability to play even simple store bought CD's, you can't use some streaming services, can't play MP3's, plus it is louder, and they turned the remotes into flashlights that cannot turn off. Really aggravating. I can only assume they were trying to promote the Sony streaming music service. Yeah I agree. The PS3 with the Cell processor is powerful hardware & does an outstanding job with graphics & processing. Sony even participated with the Folding Home program where it connected to thousands of personal PS3's (at home) to conduct research with protein folding to study the causes of Alzheimer's, etc. The Air Force even use them to assemble their own super computer the Condor Cluster. The $400 PS3 had the power of what would normally cost $10,000 for similar processing power. Plus, the initial (launch) PS3 was the only version that had the Emotion Engine, making it backwards compatible, I purchased 2 of them on day one. I've owned almost every gaming console from Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo — yet, I've not been compelled to get the PS4. Like you say they took a few steps back with the "4" , another example the PS3 plays 3D, last I checked the PS4 does not. If one was to use the PS3 exclusively for movies only (not gaming) it would be an excellent choice for HT. But they do tend to overheat (processing graphic-heavy content), & the loud fan kicks in; or worse dies with Red Light of Death. Once my first PS3 died from overheating... I grabbed the Oppo exclusively for movies & purchased another PS3 for gaming. I've heard the the Darbee edition was best suited for larger 100+ screens to take advantage of the additional VDP modes. But gadgtfreek offered that there is benefit with the Darbee, for even smaller displays. That upgrade certainly has me curious in terms of improved PQ. But bear in mind, back in the day, I also bought the Sony DVP-S7700 for DVD's, by comparison the Oppo is a very cost effective option. I like things to be over-built & to last.
  7. I like the PS3 it does a great job, but I also do lots of gaming. Play your standard session of CoD, GTA, Metal Gear, Gran Turismo or The Last of Us — then fire up Gravity on Blu-ray. The PS3 is louder than the movie (the XBOX is even worse, much, much worse. lol). Pro/Con of PQ has too many variables, display, connections, calibrations, source—so individual results may vary in that respect. For me the Oppo perfectly takes on its role; Movies. Plus, it will extend the life of my beloved PS3 & help stay off the Red Light of Death (already been down that road). Congrats on your new pick up. I hope it performs well in your system.
  8. Since we were talking about Guy Ritchie & Jason Statham... I had to break this out tonight. Craig before his Bond days. This one is a fun, crazy ride & it was never a breakout hit here in the US. Statham is replacing Daniel Craig for the upcoming sequel Viva La Madness.
  9. Excellent. Thanks for the heads up!
  10. Yeah, back in the day I had just seen Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels. It was the first time I'd seen Jason Statham. Then saw he was in Sn@tch & had to get it. It's hilarious. Guy Ritchie hasn't done much, but I always enjoyed those 2 movies. Although...Lock-Stock pretty much need sub-titles all the way thru (lol).
  11. Nismo

    Zero

    I'll do you one better.
  12. I gawrunte you can tell where you're from if you need subtitles or not:
  13. The Q&A is probably just smokescreen & all they do is check your IP Address while you're taking the test. (lol)
  14. Ahhhh... took me awhile as I was distracted by the Rear Elevation Speakers (Atmos add-on modules). Kinda obvious now, the front towers are the new Atmos Integrated Speakers (previously dubbed as the "Concept Reference Premiere"). That would make the front towers the RP-280FA's? Would love to have some specs on the RP-140SA Elevation Speaker. Still 2Q availability?
  15. Haaa, guess you can't type this on the forum. Too funny.
  16. Aside from Fight Club & ******, I just never found any of Brad Pitt's performances to be believable. I'll have to check out Fury sometime. For me, this has been my go-to-standard for war/soldier epics. Best to binge watch it, just gotta find the time to get thru it over a long weekend.
  17. I have to agree. For me the movie played kinda flat (almost apologetic). I have the book, read the articles & saw numerous interviews with Chris Kyle (long before the movie was made). His story is far more powerful & sadly more tragic than was portrayed in the movie. Kinda weird because you don't watch this type of movie to be entertained (it's about service to country), but I expected it to to have more intensity & more emotion. I was expecting Black Hawk Down, Lone Survivor— not a Lifetime movie. But still glad Clint shared the story of Chris Kyle.
  18. I see your vessel... and raise you with Olympic-Class Ocean Liner. (sorry, hate to use the word "raise" when referencing the Titanic).
  19. Did you hear about Titanic?? At the end, the boat..... OMG you're a jackass. there's a boat??? thanks for ruining that one.. Ok my bad... I stand corrected. I meant to say Ship.
  20. Did you hear about Titanic?? At the end, the boat.....
  21. One does not need an "Atmos" specific speaker to take advantage of an Atmos track. You don't need to replace your existing speakers to get Atmos at home. You can use the RB's firing downward (or any speakers) as your "heights" with Atmos—for that matter any existing ceiling speaker can be used as well. Although, bear in mind with a typical (home) ceiling height of 7, 8, or 9'... the sound will only have a short distance to travel from speaker to ear, thereby the sound will not have a tremendous amount of space to disperse & move about above you. For home use, the ceiling or wall mount approach will still offer positive results, but it will act more like a traditional "channel" fired directly at the listener & thus it will have a narrow or more pinpoint path. By contrast, Atmos authoring is the opposite of pinpoint or channel based sound design. Atmos takes advantage of object-based sound design (not traditional fixed channels) where the sound engineer designs the path & movement of sound overhead. A movie theater has traditional overhead speakers, however they also have the advantage of 25'+ ceilings & may have 10-12-14 or more ceiling speakers in use. That configuration allows for object-based Atmos sound plenty of space to travel & move about overhead. The home environment is far different from a movie theater & its not practical nor realistic to be able to translate that configuration/benefit at home. What makes an Atmos Speaker an Atmos Enabled Speaker— is that it is upward firing, reflects off the ceiling, then cascades down over the listener. For example, if you have a pair of upward firing Atmos speakers as front height & a pair of upward firing Atmos speakers in the rear... you get 3D sound traveling up, reflecting down around you 360° (whereas a traditional speaker will fire directly at you). Over the past 8 months, I've played with 4 different speaker configurations & I personally prefer the upward firing approach—the sound field is encompassing. The Atmos authored tracks fill the room above & around you more than the same track offered in DTS HD, NEO:X , A-DSX, etc. If one chooses the upward firing Atmos approach, right now there are only 2 types of Atmos Enabled Speakers. 1: A traditional Tower or Bookshelf speaker with an integrated Atmos Speaker 2: Separate add-on module designed to sit on top of your existing towers (Klipsch is calling their add-on modules: Elevation Speakers) Good luck with your speaker mounts, enjoy the overhead sound. Here's a good link with covering some FAQ: http://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/dolby-atmos/dolby-atmos-enabled-speaker-technology.pdf EDIT: Naturally an AVR or Pre/Pro with Atmos decoding & Atmos authored media is required. In lieu of such options, one can use alternative codecs such as NEO:X Cinema Height or A-DSX Height
  22. The new Reference Premiere? Hopefully the 280's are pictured, not the 260's. The 280 (is only slightly smaller in width than the RF-7) at 10.5" wide vs. the 260 at only 9" wide. Still give a good sense of scale for the modules. Depending on the towers pictured, that would make the modules in the range of 10" x 17"... or 8" x 16" & that would fit nicely on my RF-7's. Tough to tell, but the woofers only appear to be around 5.25". Those are not RP-280Fs. Close, but a different model. But you are correct that they have dual 8" woofers. I'll let you guess what they are given what's sitting on the rear channels. My only interest is the Atmos modules (not the actual towers). Based on the picture, my dimension estimates were trying to evaluate some initial specs of the Atmos upward firing modules. If I knew the rear towers, I could determine the size of the Atmos modules. Pretty sure the woofers for the Atmos modules are not 8", although it would be great if they were.
  23. There's a few more I can think of, but they're so terrible... I don't want to post them for fear of having the rotten tune stuck in my head. (lol)
