I usually see through deans work for people that he uses different brand caps for mids or tweeter mostly due to most people wanting cheaper brands for the tweeters and more expensive for the mids. I don’t know if for me it would be important to have the same brand. I know my ear isn’t that critical enough to hear it. Not sure if I’d even hear the difference between Crites sonicaps or some other higher cost/reputable cap. I know I heard Deans crossovers in khorns and La scalas versus my stock la scalas and I was blown away by the difference. It was like a veil was removed. Like the singer had a hand over their mouth with the stock and with deans, that hand was removed from the mouth and everything was so clear and you could place every instrument. I was extremely impressed...but then I got alk clones with cheaper Dayton audio and audyn caps and I wasn’t so impressed compared to that same stock al-3 which I know is typically viewed as the worst crossover Klipsch ever made Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So Crites Chorus crossover would be same result for the bass? I certainly can’t afford some massive north creek 8awg air core inductors. Perhaps that’s what really helps bass. So most important thing really is just high quality caps for the mids and second most important thing is caps for the tweeters? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I did regret selling both and have been craving a pair again. I love the K43 pro woofer. Had a very beefy lower midrange. My issue might not have been the k400 but the alk crossovers. Maybe A or AAs with high quality caps for the mids would help. Though I did read others having the issue with the k400 and its bottleneck type of build. I remember DeanG saying the A55G solved that issue with the K400. I think he later said new diaphragms in the K55 brought them to the same level of the A55G which would make things a lot cheaper. I’ve read some people mention fabric spray paint which is light enough to not alter the weight but I’d be too scared to try it and I’m not sure if that was only for the passive radiators or works on all woofer cones. The 2s are precious to me. I kept them over 2 pairs of la scalas, but size was a factor(and the k400 at loud volumes hurt my ears). Overall the larger tractrix mid horn is much smoother and airy and the passive radiator with 2.5oz added really digs deep. Right now I’ve got titanium diaphragms for the tweeter and mids. After a long time of reading negative reviews of the Ti mid diaphragm and initially being too loud, they’ve broken in and smoothed out and I’m really enjoying the crystal clear sound. Still though, it’s very unforgiving to bad recordings and a lot of music can just sound bad with Ti diaphragms. The phenolics lacked this kind of detail but had a warmth I kind of miss. Felt more emotionally involved with the phenolics and too clinical with the Ti diaphragms if that makes sense. The Chorus I right now have only been used for movie/tv duty. With what little music I’ve listened on them, they actually sound a lot better than I expected. I owned Forte Is before and thought the exponential horn was too forward and a bit harsh compared to the larger tractrix Chorus II horn- got rid of them pretty quick but these Chorus I came up for a good deal and they sound sweet in a large room. I’ve been playing with position-deep in corner, out and toed in or out and facing forward with no toe in- I think I like no toe in best for soundstage and not having that exponential horn directly firing at your ears which could be harsh. The bass is there but you don’t feel it in your chest like with the Chorus II but it’s a very large open living room so I think even the Chorus II would need a sub in such a room. Apparently you can add 7” tube ports to dig as deep as the Chorus II but i haven’t gotten to it yet. I can imagine with the tube port mod and refreshed caps, the Chorus I can get close to the IIs but the larger horn always wins. Might ultimately put the Ti mids into the Chorus I for movies and get new Crites phenolics for my Chorus II for music. I wonder how close the Chorus I modded with Ti diaphragms and new caps and tube port mod can sound compared to the Cornwall III? I’ve read many reviews where the Chorus line had more similarities to the Cornwall line than dissimilarities so using the Cornwall IIIs own Ti diaphragms might bring it pretty close? Maybe mine is just faded a lot which is a shame bc I wish it were dark like in the ad or on my Chorus II. It’s one of the reasons I’ve been too lazy in restoring the finish by stripping the veneer and new black paint on the front motorboard and horns and hardware. No that’s correct, I have both the 1s and the 2s but I was asking specifically about the woofer. It looks exactly like the woofer in my Chorus II. My Chorus I have a grey woofer as seen in this photo Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sorry to get off topic, but those woofers look like the same ones in my Chorus II. MyChorus I have very old grey looking woofers. Did they use different woofers in the later years of the Chorus line or are those Chorus II woofers in a Chorus I cabinet and are they interchangeable? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I too found this to be my solution as i added Titanium diaphragms for the mids(from the Heresy III and Cornwall III) in my Chorus II's and a slight cut at the upper mid frequencies as well as a bigger cut at 7k(necessary for me since i dont have the bandpass yet to roll off the Ti mid that keeps playing at full volume when the tweeter is supposed to come in at 7k where the original phenolic dropped off). Burn in(have had them playing non stop since last Thursday night) and that slight eq from 2.5khz to 7khz has really helped and i'm actually on board now with the Ti mids and i've yet to even refresh my caps either. Haven't tried a boost to the upper treble/tweeter, but i'm definitely going to give it a shot tomorrow night.

Only listening at mid-low volumes for a bit here after leaving it playing for a few hours earlier and only testing with ambient music such as Vangelis. Not sure it really needs the cut at 7k at this volume, but i went ahead and did a 3db cut-nothing detectable right now. I can definitely pick up much more detail and clarity from the TI's at this volume but overall i'm not blown away as i expected to be. I'm generally a mid volume guy so maybe it will open up more the louder it goes. What i am happy about at the volumes i've listened to is that i've been either impressed or neutral. No "love it or hate it" factor here as with most. I seem to be in the middle right now. Of course things can change when i get up to "my" loud levels tomorrow. It could end up being too bright as some have said, but i don't think so. It's just nothing drastic and instantly noticeable for me. The only time i was ever instantly blown away by the difference was going from stock diaphragm to Ti tweeter in a KLF-10. Perhaps it was much more noticeable due to it being a cheap poly diaphragm to Ti where as the phenolic is far superior to the poly so the difference won't be as noticeable? I'll have more thoughts by the end of the weekend.

Yep. Thanks. I’ll get to it later if I decide it’s truly necessary or I just need a 2 or 3 decibel decrease at 7k. For now I’m going to let them burn in for a good while with movies. My only issue so far is the wire connector is too small for the large positive polarity on the diaphragm. I don’t want to cut the original off and crimp a larger connector in case I want to return to original diaphragms. I listen to more music with the Chorus II so I might eventually put these in the Chorus I which have movie duty but wanted to test with music on the Chorus II after burn in Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I just tried the cardas calculation and it wants me to pull the speakers 7ft from the rear wall and 4ft from the side walls which would put the speakers a couple of ft in front of me. Am i supposed to feel like i'm getting a lap dance from the singer?

I just did this very same thing with my Chorus II and Chorus. I've always had them in the corners facing either right in front of me or right behind me. A few days ago I tried both speakers 15" from the rear wall and facing directly forward and about a foot from the side walls and i'm loving the sound right now. I feared loss of bass but that's not the case at all. I do remember a review way back that I don't recall completely, but it was a Forte I or II review and he found the best position was facing directly forward as well instead of toed in like most recommend. I'm going to try that cardas room calculator when I get a chance. Thanks! Waiting on my hate em or love em Titanium mid diapghrams that you have in your Cornwall IIIs.

Would you be better off getting original La Scalas shipped to you at a fraction of the price and having room to spare on some premium parts in a new crossover? I've never heard the LSII and don't know much about the newer crossover(i assume that's the only difference other than aesthetics/thicker MDF? and i guess fresh diaphragms?), but i owned 2 pairs of LSi splits and that k43 woofer added a very meaty sounding mid bass that i loved, just not as low reaching as the standard k33. Overall the bass was tight and accurate. Instantly recognizable after listening to direct radiators(in my case Chorus II's). In the end, i needed cash and sold both pairs and kept the Chorus II for overall balance and size, but i regret not keeping 1 pair. While ugly for home use, the LSi split makes it easy to move to Jubescala in the future either with a K402 on top or a K510 in the top bin motorboard cut out. You can always have it professionally veneered in the future. Just a thought. If you can afford it though, hard to pass up on the LSII beautiful veneers and the split top with grill-VERY SEXY.

Well if those are the actual photos of the speaker. I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m 99% those were CF-4s. Of course I withheld this information for my own benefit but now that they’re officially gone...if you look at the woofer size, they touch the horns, so those are 12s of a CF-4. CF-3s have dual 10s and they don’t touch the horn like the larger 12s. Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong.[mention=58280]wvu80[/mention]

He hadn't logged in since he posted them for sale. I checked every day. Today(few hours ago) they were updated as sold. SO upset. Really wanted them, but got no responses to all my messages saying i was ready to go pick them up for cash. Anyone here get them?

Maybe he had reservations about selling them and didn’t like the low ball offers or just the offers he was getting and said they were sold but actually kept them? I’ll admit I’ve done the same before. I’ve had my Chorus II up for sale and I grew frustrated with so many low ball offers and weird trade offers(trade for guns) that I just kept them. I was only selling to fund Forte III's but was convinced to stick with the Chorus II. Now I’d probably only trade them for CF-4s or trade plus cash for KHorns. Possibly La Scalas. The Chorus I I don’t really have an attachment to so in a moment of curiosity I offered them for trade for the KLF-30 hours after the ad went up on Craigslist and he didn’t even respond.

I've always imagined the Forte I was a big Heresy, and the Cornwall or Chorus I were roided Heresys. Apparently the KLF series don't really have a heritage sound, but apparently closer to the RF series. Could be wrong but I do believe I've seen several posters here make that comparison.
