  1. I was thinking of buying the Heresy replacement woofer and replacement horns from Layne for a center channel. I am wondering if anyone here has done this and what was the result. For the price I could get a set of used Heresy and have 2 center channels. But I thought it would be cool to build a custom cabinet with the dimensions I want ( with the same cu.ft as the original).
  2. Hi, It's just interesting to note that all though the Heritage speakers share many of the same components as the K-horn the real difference (besides the bass horn) is the size of the driver lens. On the Khorn they are almost two feet long. This would definetely change the sound from the driver and give a more fuller sound and wider soundstage. I've never actually heard a K-horn but they are huge. They stand almost 5 feet tall and are almost 3 feet wide. I think the actual width is closer to 31 inches and the height around 52 inches but that is one big *** horn speaker. And I thought my Cornwalls were big.
  3. DTS wins every time. DD is a very good close second. I would love to hear how the newer formats compare: SACD and DVD-A.
  4. A good digital coaxial cable is around 15.00. You can spend more but I doubt if you could hear the difference. For 20.00 why not buy a better cable with more shielding.
  5. Justin, Why not go buy 4 Klipschorns and a single Heritage speaker for a center. I think you'll be happier then the newer stuff from Klipsch. Add a Rel sub and you'll have an amazing system. I don't really like the sound of the newer two way Klipsch stuff. Just my opinion. You have so many options with that kind of cash. For any amp I would consider the Parasound 220 watt amp or the B&K 7250. I think you could pay a lot more for an amp but not get much more in performace. My money would go into the speakers which are the most important components. A good processor and CD player also helps. I like the reference 30 from B&K. Good luck.
  6. Thanks shape shifter, It's a fun hobby. I have two corners as you saw in my pics so K-horns are a possibility. I'm not sure I would gain anything because I have the sub. Also, the K-horns are huge speakers. Maybe someone without corners would like to trade for the COrns and cash. Who knows. I posted to more shots I forgot I had. These show the sub with the cover off and also the grill which is made from Klipsch cane material. I bought it for 20.00 a yard right from Klipsch. It's fun to look at other setups. Do u have any links? The SHerbourn amp is my latest addition which I like a lot. I wanted the B&K 7250 but it was out of my price range at the time.
  7. Hi, I bought my Corns new and unfinished. The wife insisted on a red mahagony finish. I didn't complain since she was giving me the nod to keeping them. She really loves the sound too. Anyway, many years later her tastes changed and she wanted a natural bond finish. This was not realistic because of the original stain. I bleached the hell out of the finish and then applied a coat of clear poly. The results were unexpected and the wife was happy once again. The finish looks like mesquite wood. I really love it. I've posted the results here and also a picture of a DYI sub. It weighs in at 250 lbs. Double walled, braced and has a hand made 15" sub driver that has made my listening experience much more satisfying. I never know the sub is on until I shut it off and then the wife comments on how the music doesn't sound as good. I never thought I needed a sub with the Corns and their massive 15" woofers but the sub makes all the difference. 8. Hi, I have Cornwalls that were produced around 1985. They have k-79 tweeters. The original Cornwall used the K-77 tweeter. I was wondering if anyone has listened to these two drivers side by side? I'm wondering if the sound is that much different? Thanks
  9. HMMM, All great posts. It sounds like the main difference in the Khorn vs. the Cornwall is the horn loaded bass. Horn loading the bass requires that the speaker fires into the cabinet and resonate through a transimssion line configuration. Please correct me if I'm wrong but that is my understanding of this? I would think that the bass would sound muffled and roll off at around 50hz. I'm wondering if a viable mod would be to close the port holes on the Cornwall and replace the woofer with one that is made for a sealed cabinet. This would give the Cornwalls the deep solid bass of a sealed cabinet. The driver would have to match the other drivers and the cabinet would have to be braced better. I myself wouldn't do this because I want to keep my Cornwalls stock. When I first got my Heresys the edges on the cabinet were not finished. In other words you could see that the cabinet is made out of plywood. I almost hot ironed on stripping but then decided not to because they wouldn't be stock anymore.
  10. HDR, I would classify the Heritage speakers a little different. The K-Horn is a Mercedes, the Cornwall would be a BMW and the Heresy is a Cadillac. Granted that the crossovers are different for each speaker and that the Heresy is more of a shelf speaker. However, the Cornwall is designed very similar to the K-horn. The Khorn uses a folded bass horn for tighter bass and rolls off at around 45-50hz. While the Cornwall uses a ported design for the bass and can reach down to about 35hz. I would think that the sound of these two would be very similar with the Cornwall. Obviously the K-horn costs more because of its design, however that doesn't make it a better sounding speaker. I would still be interested in hearing from Klipsch fans who have both speakers and the main differences in the sound (a very difficult thing to put in to words.
  11. Hi, I own Cornwall 2's and am very happy with them. They have a sweet spot when the volume is medium and the source is well mixed. The music is dynamic and beautiful. I have them in a small room so I guess that the sweet spot is different for larger rooms. In any event the K-horns used many of the same drivers and the Cornwalls. I also own Heresys and notice that the sound is very similar to the Cornwalls with much less bass. The Heresys with a sub sound very good. I would think that the K-horns would sound close to the Cornwalls. I've read that the bass is a little tighter. However, I think the bass is very tight on the Cornwall. I'm not looking to start a fight but am interested in how the K-horns sound next to a Cornwall. Has anyone actually A/B them? The reason for this thread is that I've been thinking of trading in the Corns for K-horns??
  12. I guess I should have mentioned that money is a concern. If I didn't care about saving money I guess I would dump 450.00 on a pair of heresys and call it a day. Parts Express sells pro driver horns for 40.00 and up. Layne sells then much less than Klipsch too. I was looking for an inexpensive solution. Layne Ausio also sells the crossovers for around 35.00. Any ideas are appreciated.
  13. Hi, I'm trying to match Corwall 2 speakers. The cetner channel I want to build must be 3-way and sound good. I'm not that concerned with a perfect timber match. I don't thin kit's neccessary. I'm not sure it's a viable project. However, I could custom build the cabinets in the finish I want and to the dimensions I want which is very attrative to me. Parts express sells Selenium horn drivers http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?DID=7&WebPage_ID=3&Start=2&CATID=49&ObjectGroup_ID=279&sm=1&so=2that look interesting. Layne audio claims to have replacement drivers for Heresys that are a close match. I think they sell the mid and tweeters for around 69.00 each. Layne also sells matching woofers and crossovers. However, I would love to hear from someone who actually used their parts. Am I just better off buying Heresy speakers and using one for a center channel. They wouldn't really fit my sizing needs but I do like the sound of the Heresy? Thanks
  14. Hi, I would like to build a 3-way center channel and was wondering if anyone has fooled around with pro horn drivers sold by Parts Express or drivers being sold by Layne Audio. If so has anyone built any Klipsch clones and if yes how did they sound to other Klipsch speakers? PS where do you buy ALK crossovers? Thanks
  15. I'm a proud owner of CW IIs and I love them. Do they always sound terrific no!! SOmetimes they sound awful but it must be the mixing because when I put in CD that has been mixed correctly the sound is incredible. Over synthesized music is not a CWs friend. In any event I'll get back to the original question. Yes I would love to see the CW made again. However, I doubt Klipsch will do it because of the girth of the CW and the wife factor. I don't like Bose at all. My friend has a Bose sytem and it sounds horrible but Bose makes small cube speakers wich appeal to many people. I think that is why the Heresy is still in the lineup but not the CW. Maybe I'm wrong. I would love to see the CW sold as a kit with raw drivers and plans. That way I could construct my own original looking cabinet. Fat chance of that happening.
  16. Hi, The reason I posted this thread is that I don't have any way to compare the speakers side by side. My friend is out of state and is coming for a visit so I need to make a deciscion fast. I think I'll keep the Cornwalls. They are a classic and I love the sound so why gamble on another speakers. From what I'm reading they are not worlds a part but the CW may be smoother. The 30s probably have more bass but that doesn't matter because I'm running a home brewed sub. The upgrade bug is hard to get rid of. I would love to hear the newest stuff from Klipsch compared to the CWs. My amplification is a Sherbourn 5 channel amp. I also have Heresy speakers and will be using a B&K amp for those. The Heresys are the older version but sound very close to the CWs in the upper mids and highs. With a sub with is a killer setup. Now I need to buy another set of Heresys and used each speaker for a center channel. Right now I'm using a C5 center that is adequate. I also have S5 sorrounds which are also adequate.
  17. I have a pair of older Heresys and a pair of Cornwall IIs. The little Heresys can hold their own with the Cornwalls if you use a good quality sub. They are very sweet. The Corwalls have better imaging and obviously more bass but with a sub the little guys can hang with their bigger brother. Good luck and enjoy!! PS Good amplification will make a huge difference. When I first brought my Heresys home I used my B&K amp with a good processor and they sounded great. I then installed them in the bedroom and hooked them up to an older HK receiver and they didn't sound as good. Get a good Parasound or B&K amp to drive your new speakers and a descent processor. Receivers really do suck!
  18. Hi, I have a pair of Cornwalls that I bought new. I am very happy with the speaker. However, I heard that the KLF30 was a much improved horn speaker compared to the Cornwall. I heard it was smoother. I was wondering if anyone had A/B the two sepakers and compared the sound. The reason I'm asking is that I have a friend who wants to make a trade. Opinions are appreciated.
  19. First remove the original finish. Next, sand with 220, 320, 400, and 600 grids. The best too you can buy for this is an orbital sander. Now use tack rags to rmove all the dust, etc. Tape a cutout of the woofer, made from carboard, to the driver and use tape to cover the other drivers. Buy some water based poly in an aerosol can. Spray several light coats letting each coat dry for about 40 minutes. Sand with 600 and give one more final coat. Next, apply Johnson paste wax and you're done. Poly is a tough and durable finish. Linseed oil will not hold up well.
  20. Well I started out with a Lafayette receiver and speakers. They sounded ok but I knew there had to be better. My next upgrade was a receiver. I fell in love with a Luxman receiver but ended up with a HK receiver. The HK reciever sounded beautiful and was melded with a Denon 1500ll CD player. However, the ultimate goal was total sperates. This was accomplished when the stock market handed me some cash. I took my profits and bought a B&K AV5000ll amplifier, Sherwood NewCastle Preamp, and of course Klipsch Cornwalls. The Cornwalls were bought new and came delivered in a crate. These boys were big and bold. My wife almost **** herself but heard the sound and agreed that these speakers helped warm the soul. I'm in heaven each time these suckers fire up. I first auditioned Cornwalls in NYC. Harvey Electronics had a large shop with two a gigantic listening room. I tested many award-winning speakers that day using the A/B method and the Corwalls screamed out above the rest with an open airy sound that was dynamic clean and beautiful. I was totally blown away by the Cornwalls. The only other speakers that I would consider today were the B&W Nautilus or Magnepans. I'd like to have three different systems in my house but can only afford one so Klipsch gets the honors. Other upgrades include a Denon 1500ll CD player, monster cable, banana plugs, a KSF C-6 Center and KSF surrounds. The new Klipsch speakers are really a disappointment compared to the older stuff. The plan is to replace these with older Heresy speakers. The most important upgrade was a dedicated amp, great speakers and a good sounding CD player.
  21. I just bought a pair of Heresys with a k-22 woofer, K-53 mid and K-77 tweeter. I was wondering if I should upgrade the mids to a K-55 and the woofer to a K-24. I will also be running these speakers with a sub. Also, does it pay to dampen the drivers with clay or rope caulking? Thanks This message has been edited by trader on 02-08-2002 at 10:22 AM
  22. Malcom or anyone who knows these speakers: I'm looking at a Heresy speaker with: tweeter is a k-77 Mid is k-53-k and woffer is either I or K-22-K. Serial #8424867. I was wonderng if I will be unhappy with this woofer and mid compared to other Heresys? I would appreciate your opinion. Thanks
  23. How long did Klipsch use this mid range squawk and did they use it in any other Heritage speaker? Does anyone know if it sounds similar to the K-55 in the Older Heresys? Should I stay away from Heresys with this driver. Is the K-22 woofer any good? Thanks in advance
  24. Hi, I'm looking at an older pair of Heresys with a K-77 Tweeter, K-53 Mid and K-22 Woofer. In my research it seems that the K-53 Mid sounds quite different then the original and later mids used in the Heresy line. However, I'm not sure if different means better, about the same, or much worse. I would appreciate advice on anyone who has heard the Heresy with this driver. Also, how is the woofer in this Heresy? Serial# 8424867 Am I better off buying a differnt model Heresy? Thanks
