  1. Q-man, Have u evey heard a JBL 375 mid driver? This is suppose to be one of the sweetest mid drivers ever made. How did you settle on your Altec driver? There are so many? Here is a pic of the 288: http://community-2.webtv.net/hornvox/VINTAGEAUDIOTRADERS/index.html ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch This message has been edited by trader on 08-04-2002 at 09:07 PM
  2. Did u get a chance to do more testing on the Layne Audio drivers. The guy from Layne says they are a much better driver with lower distortion and more articulation. We'll see.....Anyone else try these drivers? ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  3. There has been some mention of BOSE systems here. Interesting enough I went to a concert the other day, at a performing arts camp, and they had horn loaded BOSE speakers. I didn't know they existed. I'll probably get slammed for this but my friend had a Scott amplifier driving a pair of vintage 901's, which was 20 years ago, and I thought it sounded very musical. My Father-in-law has the new BOSE system with a low end Yammy receiver and boy does it hurt your ears. He loves it......I personally don't like BOSE systems but it's amazing how many people want their systems. They have a very respected name (non-audiophiles) and a great marketing staff. I've been doing some reading on old Vitavox, Jensen and JBL systems. There are some very interesting vintage gear out there. I need a bigger house and cash roll.....for now I can still drool over my computer monitor for free. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  4. The first link shows another drawing of the lower section of a Klipschorn. But I'm not sure how accurate it is. The other links are just interesting reading about the Klipschorn: http://community-2.webtv.net/KerrB/VINTAGETUBEAMPHORN/page4.html http://www.audioimport.nl/klipsch/11a.htm http://www.stereotimes.com/speak080301.shtm ------------------

  6. If u look at the pic of the Klipschorn cutaway you'll see that the back plate is totally solid with vents on each side. My K-horn has an opening with a screen on the back plate and also has the side vents. Builder do you know why they changed the design? Was it a radical improvement or a slight modification? Also, do u have a better cutaway you can post?
  7. Has anyone compared a Klipschorn to a JBL Hartsfield? ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch

  9. Check this link out. Lots of great information about Alnico magnets: http://www.audioheritage.org/cgi-bin/gforum.cgi?post=759;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_expandable;guest=6021 ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  10. Q, When I pulled apart my tweeter the gaskets were melded together. I had to slice it apart but I didn't do a pristine job although I doubt anyone could have done a better job. After 45 years these things don't come apart that well. Did your gasket just fall out in two pieces or is one side of the assembly plastic so you only need a gasket for one side? I'm afraid that the gasket may be too thick and that the coil will not fit in the recess corretly. Anyway, how does his new tweeter sound compared to the old one with the stock diaphragm. I heard that QC is going downhill at EV. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  11. Q, I might have had a red slash (I shipped them back) but u would think they would simply use a marker to mark each side either positive or negative. The tech guy never mention that the slash is closer to the positive lead or anything like that. Anyway, did you use your old gasket or were u able to locate a new gasket? ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  12. HDR, They sound good but when you buy something that is almost 50 years old components start to go bad and degrade. Who knows if they sound right. My Cornwalls are definetely more lively but harsher at higher volume levels. My Heresy seem to be more articulate in the mids. I knew something wasn't right and found a blown tweeter in one of my K-horns( I believe I bought them like that). I think they can sound better but I also think that to do mae them sound better I need to change the crossovers and do some tweaks like getting rid of oxidized wiring and if the magnets are worn they need to be re-generized. If what the repair guy said is true and Alnico magents do lose power, after time, wouldn't it be a good tweak to re-magnetize the magnets. I like things to work right and I can't be sure that my K-horns are sounding right until I do some maintenace. Some people will settle because they don't want to be bothered, are too cheap or can't be bothered to learn. I'm not sure why you care if I want to tweak my speakers or not? I find this BB kinda slow. I'm sorry if I am posting too much. I'll back off but please don't tell me not to enjoy myself or to bring my speakers up to spec because you think it's a waste of time or bandwidth. I've contributed some good information to this board and I think your post is a bit out of line. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  13. No. I definetely understood the tech guy. I didn't see any marking for positive and negative leads. I guess I burned out the diaphragms with the battery. Also, the diaphragm doesn't come with the gasket and on newer K-77 I was told that there is only one gasket but mine has two. One under the diaphragm and when on top. I decided to let a speaker shop do the repair because if the gasket width is not correct the coil will not sit in the recess properly and I'm not sure what the results will be. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  14. Interesting stuff. I actually meant to type 1% a year which would make my speakers magnets almost 50% gone. My friend is an electrical engineer and he said that Alnico magents are less stable then materials used today for speaker magents. For 10.00 a driver the price seems right since I'm going to have two new diaphragms put in my tweeters. I was also contemplating sending them my mid drivers and woofers. Kenratboy-10.00 includes re-charging the magnets to changing them. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  15. I have a pair of K-horns from 65. I was told that Alnico magnets lose about 1% of their power per year and should be re magnetized every 20 years. Mine are long overdue, if this is true. Is there any truth to this? The speaker shop only charges 10.00 to bring them back up to speck. Also, is it possible to remove the phase plug on a K-55 with spring connectors? Thanks ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch This message has been edited by trader on 08-02-2002 at 08:16 PM
  16. I just bought a pair of K-horns and noticed that one of the tweeters is blown. I ordered 2 replacement diaphragms from EV for 24.00 a pair. They don't supply the paper casket so I had to be carefull not to ruin the one I had. Does anyone have any tips on what to do when u thrash the casket? After 40 years things don't come apart that easily. Anyway, the guy at EV said that each diaphragm has a positive and negative lead. When I asked how u determine whic is what he said that you put the diaphragm in the magnet recess and briefly hookup a 9 volt battery. I did this and I got a buzzing sound and when I reversed leads I got no sound at all. What was suppose to happen is that the diaphragm is suppose to move. If it moves up then the positive battery lead is on the positive diaphragm lead. When I called and told their tech guy that I was only getting a buzz I was told that I probably had an open diaphragm. Sure enough I put my ohm meter on the leads and it was open. I think I might have burned them out doing the 9 volt trick that the tech guy advised. Anyway, they were cool and said to send it back for a replacement. I wanted to know how I can find the positive lead without using the 9 volt battery trick? Also, he said to apply a little silicone under the leads to alleviate any buzzing I might get when the coil moves up. Because it will also move the leads which will make a buzzing noise. Another tip was not to pull the leads to tight. I also was wondering if I should replace both tweeters? The new diaphragm looks like the coil of wires is smaller and the material that it's made out of looks different. Has anyone did an A/B test once they replaced a new diaphragm compared to an older driver with a stock diaphragm? Thanks for eveyone's help. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  17. I'd ****** up the ones from 73 but I'm looking for a pair I can pickup in the tri-state area. To bad. Both pairs look good. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  18. Hi, It doesn't sound like you have a tube amp yet so why not by an intergrated tube amplifier like the Scott 299B. You'll get a great tube sound and have a great preamp too. I assume all u want to do is listen to 2 channel music? There are other great sounding intergrated tube amplifiers they you can get at resonable prices. Keep your Denon for movies. I remember auditioning the Denon before I decided on seperates. It is a good receiver but sounds a little flat compared to good seperates. I think you'll like the results of the tube amp. I recently auditioned tubes on my system. I have good SS equipment si I didn't hear much of a difference but when I plug in my old HK receiver I want to puke. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  19. Wes, Did your wife put you up to the thread topic. "My Last Upgrade." I just bought K-horns too. Mine are from the 60's and sound great. I'm replacing the crossovers, re-wiring out the zip cord and am debating about dampening the horn lend. Enjoy!! ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  20. Just found this and I thought it was interesting. Cornwalls are called Cornwalls because you can place them either in a corner, or against the wall! This was probably obvious to everyone but me. Enjoy. I'll try to post some more neat facts here if I find them. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  21. I hope the person who kept it did so to remember his dad. If so that would be nice. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  22. Al wrote (talking about crossover slope): Mine is 6 dB / octave on the woofer to squawker. 12 dB / octave on the squawker and 18 dB / octave on the tweeter. I'm still learning so bare with me. From my readings a 1st order crossover slope is 6 db and a second order is 12 db. Also, most higher end crossovers use second order because there is less of an overlap between the frequencies that each driver must produce. Al's crossover slope is 6 db, 12 db and 18 db. Does this mean his design would be considered a hybrid? Is the original type A a true 1st order? ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  23. When u buy something that all you take your chances. It could have gotten knocked around in shipping or it wasn't properly updated. Ebay has fraud protection. Perhps you can recoup some of your money there. Email Bill at archangele666@cox.net He's a tube head and repairs tube amps. He's very good. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  24. I'musing a Sherbourn amp. I recently tested it against a Scott 299B and the SS amp had a similar sound. We both ageed it was hard to tell the difference is sound. That says a lot for my SS amp. The great thing about SHerbourn amps (owner was president of McCintosh for 4 years) is that the 5/1500 are true monoblocks...All they share is a power cord. Therefore, you could buy just two monoblocks and then upgrade later to add more. Or you can just buy a used 5/1500a for about 1200.00 and call it a day. You'll get 5 channels of smooth power. Read the reviews the Sherbourn blew away ATI's amps, parasound, Acurus, etc. It was compared to amps costing my times more and rated favorably. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch
  25. Guy, Your ears are the end all. We all hear things different. If we didn't all speakers would be designed the same with the samde drivers and all you would pay for is a different cabinet. I wish you were local because I would love to hear the comparision. There are also many facotrs, amp, preamp, CD player, etc. That may make one crossover sound better than the other. That is not to say that in any combination the 1st order may be the best design. Or perhpas Al's crossovers are the end all. We will never know. Right now the consensus is that Al's crossovers are the best crossover. Q-man put Al's crossovers to the test and it was night and day for most of the crossovers he tested. He did say that the newer crossovers from Klipsch were very similar and not worth upgrading. He didn't use the Type A or a re-done Type A for comparison. ------------------ My Klipsch Page www.nyonline.com/klipsch This message has been edited by trader on 07-31-2002 at 09:14 AM
