  1. I'm very happy with my 3802 and it sounds great with the Legends. I also have a C-7 in the back center and it matches very well and has great output. ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  2. <<<On the top endcap im thinking of cutting it around 25 inches so it sits on top of the tube, on the inside of the top im going to put 1 piece of mdf>>> That should be fine for the top. On the bottome I would go with 3 layers of MDF, 2 inside the tube and 1 25" on the outside. No need to use the plywood & T-nuts, just pre-drill the holes in the MDF first and use some drywall/wood screws and hand tighten to avoid stripping them. Also be sure to add an extra 3/4" to the over-all length of the tube to compensate for the extra layer of MDF inside. Not sure about the tuning as Dan W. from Adire gave me the specs. Just post on the HTF and you'll get an answer. DEFINITELY use the DIY 1/8" pegboard circle jig since this will probably be a one-time project for you. The Jasper jig is over $40 & the DIY works just as good, and only requires a little math/tape measure work. Good luck...Mike ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  3. quote: and 2 different pairs of switchable rear surrounds of which only 1 pair may be used at any given time, not both at once) Just an FYI...the 3802 WILL power both sets of rear surrounds at the same time. I'm running KLF-20's & 10's as my rear surrounds just that way. ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  4. Have you considered doing a dual Tempest?? Not much more $$$ for lots more output.... ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  5. Harbor Freight Tools on-line has a kit for $40 that has 12 bits. That's what I used as it has all the bits you'll need. I used the 1/4" & 1/2" straight bits to cut out the endcaps & circles for the subs/ports. Then the round-over on the edges. As far as the endcaps are you going 2 or 3 layers thick? The bits aren't long enough to cut thru 3 layers so you'll need to drill a hole thru the center to flip it over and finish cutting it out. NOTE: Cut out the flush mount for the sub, BEFORE cutting out the circle as they don't make a 3/4" rabbit bit to do it afterwards. Found that out the hard way!! I used a piece of 1/8" pegboard for a circle jig. Worked perfect and only took 3 taper head screws to attach it to the router. There's a pic of one on the HTF. MDF is VERY easy to cut and if you do make a mistake at least it's only like $18 for a full sheet. I lined my sub with 1" blanket batting from a craft store and used 3M spray glue to attach it. Not sure if you planned on using any stuffing in yours. What's the port size/length and what tune will it be? Keep the questions coming...Mike ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub This message has been edited by Mlstrass on 06-30-2002 at 10:58 PM
  6. arfz28, I'd be glad to offer up the mistakes I made and tips I learned while building mine. Just let me know...Mike ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  7. There's also a BUNCH on ubid, so perhaps you could go in on a pair with someone else... ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  8. Just threw that one out there to lighten the mood. We Americans all know that babies in Canada are born with skates on!! Hell I didn't start playing until in my late 20's, and last year I hung up the skates and became a referee. Next you'll be telling me the Habs were a dynasty ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub This message has been edited by Mlstrass on 06-29-2002 at 10:15 PM

But you have NOT built a dual Tempest sonosub and that was the sub TG asked about. I have built one and offered up my impressions, period. Never said it was the best, or even told him to build one vs an SVS quote: I know well a sonosub can be built for under $1000 will oputperform(SPL) most subs under $5000 easy.No secret in this,as the tube costs under $100,conectors and endcaps $50 tops and the rest can go towards high quality heavy duty drivers. This is quite contradictory to all of the negative remarks you made earlier. quote: Theears oviously has EXTREME EXPERIENCE in this field and you all would be better off letting him have his opinion. OBVIOUSLY he has NO experience building a dual Tempest sub, which is sub in question. He's entitled to his opinion, but it carries NO weight when he has no hands-on experience with one. Besides Americans are better at hockey than Canucks, and The Great One was actually born in Chicago ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub This message has been edited by Mlstrass on 06-29-2002 at 07:25 PM
  10. Time for my Jerry Spinger "final thought" on this thread as it's going nowhere. TG asked how an Ultra would compare to a dual Tempest and he got a few responses. If you reread my response I said I had no experience with the Ultra, but told him "my" experience with the dual Tempest I built, plain & simple. Then theFoot jumps in with a VERY negative response to my post and all kinds of negative remarks about the sonosub, a sub he's NEVER built or heard. Someone please show me where he helped TG in any way at all with his remarks! Then we did a little verbal sparring and puckerboy jumps in to defend him. I'll ask you, how can I learn something from him when he's babbling on about a sub he's NEVER heard or built?? Everybody's entitled to their own opinion, but if you want to be respected at least have an opinion on something you're familiar with otherwise you end up sticking your foot in your mouth ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  11. JA is correct about the relationship between enclosure size, port length/size, & specs of the chosen driver. I would suggest doing some research over at the HomeTheaterForum under the DIY section before you decide to build your sub. There's a lot of knowledge to be gained that will help you succeed the first time around. Good luck...Mike ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  12. dafish, Pucker-up baby In all seriousness, since theEars has not built a DIY sonosub is he really qualified to comment on them?? I have not heard an Ultra and stated that up front. I only offered my experience with the sub I built, and then he jumps all over me. He DOES need to get a life. I don't doubt that he has some knowledge in the sub arena, but DIY isn't one of them so he should have just left it alone as he had NOTHING to contribute to the thread, so NO *** kissing coming from my direction. ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  13. I built a big sub because it doesn't require a lot of power and it easier to get more SPL, but I shouldn't have to explain that to a "self-proclaimed" expert. Again, your only valid point is that a DIY sonosub is bigger than an SVS or commercial sub. Obviously the people building them don't have a problem with that. So who the f*ck cares what you think. To me you're still a tool....... ------------------ KLF-30 - mains KLF-10 - center channel KLF 10's/20's - surrounds KLF-C7 - back center DIY dual Tempest sonosub
  14. arfz28, Good luck on the sub. I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. It's almost hard to imagine how a low priced sub, a cardboard tube, & some MDF can sound SO good. If someone doesn't have the $$$ for an SVS then DIY is a viable alternative irregardless of how they may compare; size, specs, & price wise. We both know this isn't a competition, but others seem to have a real problem with that... Don't forget to rent the crane to get it into your house
  15. Obviously theFoot has issues with large cylinder shaped objects, are we feeling a little envious So far your only arguement has been that the sonosub is BIG compared to an SVS. Who cares if it's in a dedicated HT room and fits in. Personally I like the reactions I get when people first see it, and especially when they hear it. If you don't believe my measurements who the hell cares, sure not trying to impress you as you're NOT the sub authority you think you are. I built this sub to impress ME! The guy asked a question and I answered, why do you have such a problem with that???? If he's not worried about building a big sub and wants the most performance for the $$$ then DIY might be the answer. Wondering if my "chimney sized" sub is as big as theFoot's ego
  16. I've got 8 Legends in my HT: 10's, 20's, & 30's and the sub blends in perfectly. Between the pounding bass and loud/detailed horns I couldn't be happier. Never heard the K-horns so I really couldn't give you an answer on that one. The bass is very detailed/accurate on my sub and goes very low, so I would "assume" that it would work out fine. Just build one and find out This message has been edited by Mlstrass on 06-29-2002 at 01:23 AM
  17. My 3 & 5 year old sons love the "space movie" as they call it. Even at low levels the bass is incredible and shakes the walls.
  18. While not a "monster" JPII had Dino bass
  19. Opening scene of Lethal Weapon 4 is also pretty good.
  20. I can't speak for the Ultra but I have a dual Tempest sonosub. Cost was about $900 to build including the Hypex amp which was $500. You can get less expensive amps if on a budget. I'm only pushing 250watts to each driver and here's the specs I've measured @ 1 meter. 16Hz = 110 20Hz = 117 31.5Hz = 127 45Hz = 125 Sub is very tight and accurate whether playing quiet or VERY loud. The depth charges on U-571 LITERALLY shook my neighbors windows 2 houses away! I couldn't be happier with the way this sub turned out. If you're near Chicago I'd be glad to give you a demo. I'm more than willing to put it up against a pair of Ultras as win or lose I still know my DIY sub kicks major ***!! After reading the post by theEAR all I can say is he needs to change his name to theFOOT since he's gone and stuck it in his mouth again This message has been edited by Mlstrass on 06-28-2002 at 09:20 PM
  21. Got my 8 Legends cranking an old WBMX hotmix I downloaded last night. At -8 on the 3802, all I can say is AWESOME!!! I'm only about 3 hours from Indy so drive up for a listen
  22. Just checked it out...too much money to me considering I picked up a NICE pair of 20's a few weeks ago for $500. I still want a 20/30 for a CC, but don't want to go over $250. I only paid like $125 for 10 that I converted as it was a scratch & dent. Still looking....
  23. I'll second the 3802. Plenty of options and drives my 8 Legends with no problems. I don't see myself upgrading it for several years...
  24. Head level while standing? Is this your normal viewing/listening position vs sitting? If so I'd probably build some platforms out of 2x4's & some nice stained wood. Make sure the base is wide enough as you don't want them tipping over. Good luck...Mike
  25. The Tempests are available directly from Adire Audio on-line or Acoustic Visions (Kyle Richardson is the guy I think) You can find LOTS of info on the HomeTheaterForum about the drivers and DIY subs. I "believe" my dual Tempest sub goes lower/louder than all but the top SVS sub, but don't quote me on that. Some guys on the HTF have done some testing and compared results but I don't remember off hand the exact details. I can tell you that a dual Tempest will be all you'll ever need/want in a sub.
