  1. In person is of course the way to go.  Recording oddities, youtube compression, playback system oddities and headphone or speakers variances etc have an effect on playback.

However I find it at the least an interesting diversion.  I can certainly hear a difference on my headphones.

You got me thinking about the DeanG network tweaks, but then my RF-7II are for multi-channel movie, so then they would likely not match up as well to my 64ii center.

  2. Jeez, what a messed up family!  I guess they like to cause drama.

On a side note - getting on a cruise ship holds zero appeal to me.  Though I did watch the love boat and gilligans island growing up :D

  3. Yep.  What @dcbrown88 said.  The R-115SW reviews fairly well but there is always a "but"...

What turned me off of buying one is that it seems to be tuned to have a bit of a boomy hump.  I'd prefer as flat a response as possible.  I think that hump is part of what makes it a fun, chest thumping sub.  However, as one reviewer put it, no matter what they did they could not tune out the boominess tendency.  Initial impressions were good, but as they brought in more subs to compare the other options pulled into the lead.

I haven't owned one or even heard one. It seems like a "fun" sub, but that's not always desired.  I have a place for that in my garage...if my current garage sub kicks the bucket I wouldn't mind putting one of these in to replace it.  That's what the garage is about.  Me wrenching on the car or the bikes, fun music easing my busted knuckles.

That said, who knows...unless you're directly comparing multiple brand subs you'll never know or care of the differences.    From what I gather it is quite capable and refined enough to do a fine job in a home theater and music.

  4. grr.  getting amp envy right now :)

I'm enjoying my Forte II with what I have, NAD C372.  But I have that nagging need to hear other amp pairings.  Would like to have a nice warm sound for their use.  I'm not dissatisfied with the NAD, but...

I "got" the pipe and slippers reference, it brought to mind sitting in a nice warm den, and the kind of sound you'd want in that environment with a nice single malt scotch on hand.

OK.  If the bone is more than 10%, you have a different cut of meat than I am used to using.  It's still a roast, though, and it should be fine.

Just cook on low.  If you go that long on high, you will ruin it.  I had a couple of friends try, but they burned it that way.

For a 5.6-pounder, 7 hours will probably do it.   This last one I did was probably 4-5 pounds, and I let it go 6 hours.  It's hard to find them around here under 7 pounds, and so I cut them in half for 2 uses.

    Enjoy!

It was pretty good, and family approved.  The bone turned out to be quite small.  Tons of meat...we had our third meal of it tonight and still had leftovers, which are now in the bellies of our happy dogs (3 days in a row, we're pulled porked out).  For the first day I made a mustard sauce as part of the pulled pork slider concept.  I enjoyed it.  Pretty much anything on a sweet roll is a win :D  Mustard sauce was: Mustard (duh), fresh garlic, honey, a little mayo and ketchup, cider vinegar and cayenne.

Cook time was close to 7 hours I'd say, I might have gone a little too long as I let it get to about 184F.  180 was probably about right.

  6. I went with 4x of the 5800's, I wanted to tonally match the front stage as much as possible.  Honestly I'm not sure if there is much advantage vs going with the 5650's, since they both have the 1" titanium tweeter and cerametallic woofers, and they stay crossed over at 80hz.  But bigger is better right? :)

For the kind of watching we do, most of the time I don't notice much if anything coming from the ceiling speakers.   But once in a while I'll be surprised at audio content in a movie and I'm glad I put them in.  Regardless, I would do it again.

@Fenderplayer Roadie.com has "fits in a pickup" from Knoxville to Houston for $248.  Fits in a hatchback or SUV is $223.  If I could get them delivered to me by someone in an SUV instead of being tossed round in a  truck,  for $223, that would be a no brainer.  RF-7, RC-7, RS-7 for $1,350? Hell yeah.

I think the 1100 for the set price is without the RS-7's.

Ha!  I just made some 2 days ago and am still enjoying leftovers.

Boneless vs. Bone-in?  I have had some chunks which had a small, slender, flat bone.  If that's bone-in, it doesn't make a difference.  The stuff falls right off the bone.

Warning:  It's not just 5 minutes prep.  At the end, you need to pull it all apart.  That takes a little time.  I takes me about 20-25 minutes to pull an 8 pound (uncooked) roast.  But it's mmmmm.... mmmm.... good!

Hah nice!  Just curious about cook time with the bone, I suppose it's about the temperature of the meat anyway.  The butt I got was only 5.6lbs, which so happens to just fit in my smallish crock pot, hopefully it turns out.  It's hard to find fajita seasoning without a lot of MSG in it, but I did find one, I was about to just mix up my own.

Yeah I wasn't counting pull time!  Also will be making a quick cole slaw and some fries.  Hawaiian style sweet rolls to eat as sliders or just because.

    That would be potassium nitrate.

If you want to enjoy pulled pork, buy an 8 pound Boston Butt Cut pork shoulder roast.  They are always on sale around here for $1.49 per pound.

Make 1.5 cups rub out of 2 parts brown sugar to 1 part each of Fajita Seasoning and Lowry's Seasoned Salt.  Coat the roast in yellow mustard like the video.  It will not affect the flavor, but it will make the rub stick.

Put the whole thing in a crock pot with no water or any liquid.  Cook on low for around 8-9 hours.  When finished you can take out the roast, put it on a baking pan and start pulling it all apart with 2 forks.  It's fall-apart tender.  Once it's all pulled, add whatever BBQ sauce you like in whatever quantity you want.

Super easy, and it makes a lot.   It's great on toasted buns.

Do you use bone in or boneless?  I grabbed a regular bone-in to give this simple recipe a try.  Weekdays are a pain in the butt with kids and jobs and after school appointments etc to make a decent meal for dinner.  I love stuff that is either quick prep and quick or hands off to cook so this definitely qualifies.  5 minute prep and all day slow cooking.

  10. If you don't mind me riding the coat tails of your thread - I have a more simple ask for my Forte II, I don't want to refinish them or whatever, but I would like to know what I can do to clean them and ... oil them?  Wax them?  They look a bit thirsty.

I don't mind imperfections, I like a little character in my things.

  11. Crutchfield also.  So it goes, new old stock has to go.  Now imagine a 7or 9 channel setup of all RF-7II  :D

I was just listening to my RF-7II in 2.0 for some fun music testing.  Man I forgot how much they rock on their own.  I didn't realize "extra bass" was turned on when I flipped to 2.0, and they sounded bloated / crappy bass with some music, which was disheartening.  Turned that off, then added a touch of bass for the room.  Perfect.

One song I stumbled on for "test music" (James Blake - Limit to Your Love cover) had a lot of mid to low-ish bass (around 40Hz me thinks) that was vibrating things in the house.  The open glass fireplace door was moving with the oscillation of the bass notes.  Hadn't quite heard/felt that much bass energy before from these beasts.

I've often wondered if I humidify a room to higher/denser than normal if I would achieve better sonics... perhaps negative pressures would yield better results also.

If the air is more dense/higher pressure like at sea level, it seems to me sound reproduction would be somewhat effected vs. high altitude thinner air.  Would it be audible to the human ear?  I dunno.  That's kind of hard to A/B test :D

Maybe one of those altitude chambers that athletes train in...

  13. I'll never know what I'm missing.

I'm actually using lamp cord in the office to power my Forte II at the moment.  Just happen to be out of decent speaker wire.  It sounds great, and I doubt I will hear a difference when I replace it with better speaker wire.

Old friend of mine took part in a blind listening test with a group of audiophiles, part of this test included high end speaker wire vs ramex solid copper wire. *edit - the short of it was, trained listeners during this informal blind test session in a home could not differentiate what speaker wire was in use.

I think there is some merit to using well designed interconnect cables (and speaker wire) with good materials, but I'll never buy "better" than what I consider affordable offerings from monoprice and blue jeans type places

OK, let me just throw this out there. How many of you have had coconut ice cream? Because I have had all of your kinds, well except squid, so I can definitively  say that coconut is the best. If you have not had coconut, then just go on enjoying your insipid vanilla.

I love coconut ice cream, but I like it less sweet than it's usually prepared.  My preference is still a good coffee ice cream.

One of my other favorites is a simple Haagen Dazs swiss vanilla almond.

  15. A close friend of mine was Airborne in the 80's.

The Warthog with that 30mm gatlin must be a welcome sight on the battlefield (for the good guys).  The F-4 Phantom lead sled did some good low level stuff. F-111 Aardvark was pretty good at that too.  High speed  terrain following, loaded up with the HAARM missile to knock out those sam sites.  What a crazy job that must be.  F-111 and F-4 were still active when I was in.  F-111 would come back from a sortie missing most of the paint from the leading edge of the wings.  Too much friction from the dense air down on the ground at speed :D  Maybe it was just crappy paint haha.

I'm glad as a weapons puke I didn't have to work on the A-10.  Way too many weapons hardpoints, it would probably take me all day to fully load out a 4x sortie.  I almost went for a job on the spectre, even though I would have been shoveling brass pretty much the whole time it would have been interesting.

I hear you, who knows if we're making the right military choices, I hope we never have to find out.

Yeah I agree. Just thought I see what it would do.  Think I am gonna try and order a PB-1000 and see if that is any better.  One of my problems is the PB-12/plus 2 is so darn big it is really hard to find a place to fit it.  I had to put it in a corner and gave it about a foot on each side and tuned it to 18 hz.  I put the SB-2000 in the front in between my center and right channel.

Can you run the SB-2000 in near field?  To heck with tuning it for the room, just put it on your lap and feel the bass... :D

I recently moved my SB-2000 up to my theater and have a SVS PB-12/plus 2 already in there and I think I made a mistake.  It does not really go as low as the other one, I know the other one has two 12s and is much bigger by volume, and I can't even tell it is on.  It sits about 7 feet from me, the sb-2000, and the pb sits about 6 feet away.  Think I am going to move it back to the music room and maybe get something else.  Was really looking for something that would take care of that midbass.  The PB has the sub-20hz locked down but missing that kind of slam. Any suggestions?

Glad you like the sb-2000. It is really musical and fits right in with my other speakers.

I think it can be pretty challenging to integrate a ported sub with a sealed sub, at least to get the results you're looking for.

Probably would want to use something like REW (Room EQ Wizard) with a good mic and something like the miniDSP to get the room and the subs really dialed in to your satisfaction.

  18. So many good options out there these days and good advice given already.

I'm a fan of SVS, and too lazy to DIY.  SVS, HSU, Rythmik, PSA, REL, etc all have great options that would do a great job for your use case.  I've got a SB-1000, and a SB-13 Ultra.  I love a sealed sub for music, even for movies I'm happy with the Sb-13, but might add a second one.
