  1. Thanks. The band director and the kids in the band like them. I considered adding aluminum to the front edge (the peak pf the dog house roof) but decided against it. You can buy right angle pieces but the angle on the edge is 60 degrees. It would be possible to attach one side and then carefully hammer the remaining edge down from 90 degrees to 60 degreees. Since those edges were about the only clean lines on the speakers I decided to leave them alone.
  2. Yes. These were very rough bar speakers. I added the aluminum (from Home Depot) to avoid having to rebuild every corner and edge. To avoid rattling, I buttered the edges wiith black silicone and let it squeeze out when the aluminum was screwed down. The excess was cut off after it cured. That trim will not come loose, buzz or rattle. Some captions could be: No more being intimidated by rappers in vans at intersections. or "But officer, I didn't hear your siren." or "She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored.[1] There are plenty of possible captions to this photo. 9. Gosser was my only taste. My only trip to Germany and Austria was as a chaperone of a high school band. We agreed, appropriately, to abstain from alcohol during the trip. Therefore, I got no opportunity to sample the local brews, with the exception of Gosser in Leoben, Austria (Arnold S's hometown). As a reward for helping to convert a local recreation hall to and from a band venue, our host, the local hotelier, offered each of us a glass of Gosser. So as not to insult our host, the band director issued a special one glass dispensation. The Gosser looked and tasted like beer, e.g., Bud, Miller, etc., so I guess more exposure to German beers might have been wasted on me.
  10. They're done . . . sort of.[1] I'm waiting for some new caps from Bob Crites to fine tune the networks. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> The improvement in the bass was immediately apparent.[2] The predicted increased relative loudness of the squawker was also immediately apparent. As of now, I've taken the advice of Bob, Dean and djk and dropped from tap 4 to tap 3 on the autotransformers and placed 15 ohm resistors across the squawker leads. The attenuation of the squawkers seems nearly perfect. When the caps arrive, Ill eliminate the resistors. So far, the bass seems to go lower without sacrificing any of the fast tight bass that Ive always liked with La Scalas. It will be interesting to see if the difference is as apparent when the speakers are returned to their perches on the tops of instrument lockers. Cutting into the La Scalas was easier than expected. One, theyre not mine and two, their rough history as bar speakers for decades removes them from the furniture category. In the unlikely event that anyone wants to restore them to stock operation, it would be easy to again seal the dog houses and return the networks to stock Type AA. I dont see that happening though. In Bass Reflex Mod For LaScala? Mowtnbkr asked about the need for damping material. Right now there is none. Unlike doing the boxes below the speakers where some stuffing could be placed on the floor, there is no easy way to add damping material in this configuratrion without it falling inside the dog house. If you read this djk--or anyone else with pertinent experience--what do you suggest? Michael Colter has trained me not to take flash photos of black speakers. The daylight is failing fast. Pictures will be taken and posted tomorrow. [1] Two 4 x 7 PVC ports Gorilla glued into the ¾ plywood cover for the backs of the tops. The networks will be mounted upside down to the inside of the tops, to clear the ports and the squawker. Right now the networks are outside the box connected via leads to the drivers passing through a port to allow easy experimentation without removing the new backs. I also added braces to the bass bins. [2] Of necessity the auditioning is being done in a closed two car garage. Not the ideal listening environment. H/K 430 receiver.
  11. They're done . . . sort of. I finally decided to open the tops of the dog houses, seal the tops and port them out the back. See Ported La Scalas? for details. mowntnbkr that's a good question, that I have pondered also. It's addressed in the Ported La Scalas? thread.
  12. Rick, You were going to send a poster board template. I'd be grateful and would reimburse you and/or pay it forward, whatever your pleasure. Thanks
  13. Dean, I have ordered the caps necessary to make the change from 13 uF. I'll also try the 15 ohm resistors becuase they're inexpensive and I want to compare them with the cap change. I expect to use the caps as the permanent mod. Thanks again for a prompt and informative reply. I still would like to understand how and when to "float the ground."
  14. After studying the AA schematic, I was certain that tap 0 had to stay grounded and that the lead into the autotransformer from 13uF should stay in place at tap 5 (sounds like a Brubeck song). Alas,I confess ignorance. How would I "float common" and "swamp the autoformer" as you suggest ? Please recall that these are used in a band room, not in a home 2 channel system. What is the simplest and least expensive way to attenuate the squawker, if necessary? Thanks Dean.
  15. I realize that many combinations to achieve many levels of squawker attenuation are possible and that finer adjustments could require reworking the network. That is not my present concern.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> At present I only need to know what to do with the existing common ground at tap 0 and the existing connection of tap 5 to 13 uF. If, as djk suggests, I move (+) from tap 0 to tap 2 and move (-) from tap 4 to tap 5, are the existing connections of tap 0 to common ground and tap 5 to 13uF maintained?
  16. Thanks for the prompt response. It's not -4.6 dB per se that I'm trying to achieve, but rather one step down from the present squawker setting of (+) to tap 0 and (-) to 4 (See attached Type AA schematic). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> One of the original proponents, if not the original author, of the LS bass reflex mod, djk, suggests (+) to tap 2 and (-) to tap 5. Dean G[1] also suggests that the stock setting produces -3.8 dB and that the setting suggested by djk results in -4.6 dB, but neither indicates if tap 4 should remain grounded and neither speaks to the existing connection between tap 5 and 13uF. [1] See Dean Gs Autotransformers for Dummies (or the Mentally Deranged) attached to the next post.
  17. I decided to go through the roof . . . of the dog house, seal the back of the top and have the ports face to the rear. The added 10" height from the boxes would have been unacceptable in this application. In the unlikely event that the band director is not pleased with the results, it would not be difficult to again seal the dog house and go back to normal. I'll post pictures and an evaluation of the results. First I need to solve a riddle regarding the autotransformers addressed in the thread linked below. Autotransformer Taps Questions?
  18. Taps on the Fourth of July seems appropriate. Is the common ground (tap 0)[1] on the autotransformer always connected to ground? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> After a diligent search of the forum, Ive located several charts that indicate combinations of squawker connections to the taps on the autotransformer to adjust the attenuation of the squawker, but I cant find the answer to the question above. Currently, the autotransformer in the Type AA network has the following connections: 0 to common ground, 4 to Squawker (+) and 5 to 13 uF. Apparently that attenuates the squawker 3.8 dB. I want to go to 4.6 dB attenuation, which calls for connecting squawker (+) to tap 5 and squawker (-) to tap 2. Does tap 0 stay connected to common ground? Does tap 5 remain connected to 13 uF? I am in the process of completing the bass reflex mod to the La Scalas that I restored for the high school band. I decided to do the version through the top vented out the back. In the unlikely event that the band director doesnt like the change, plugging the new hole in the bass bin would not be too difficult. Pictures and an evaluation of the results will follow. I expect to need to adjust the attenuation of the squawkers, i.e., the questions regarding the autotransformers. [1] ALK Squawker level and the transformer instructions, page 1.
  19. Somewhat similar to the posed hypothetical is a live performance outdoors or in a large auditorium. Without on stage monitors facing them (or headphones/earpieces), the performers cannot hear themselves; it can be very disconcerting.
  20. Michael, "So I guess I'm now a minor folk hero among Russian Klipsch Fans!" There's nothing minor about you. You're major all the way!
  21. EDIT: 7/7 The plan changed, they're done & they sound great! I plan to build two of the boxes necessary to effect the bass reflex mod to La Scalas that has been discussed many times on this forum. The thread titles and links to many of the threads are included below. If you have any experience with the mods or can point to other threads it would be appreciated. 22. Hi Michael,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I originally shared your concerns about the locations on top of the instrument lockers, but buzzing/rattling has not been a problem. The lockers are made of MDF-like material; only the doors are metal wire cages. Theyre deeper from wall than the depth of the La Scalas. The speakers sit on 1.5 dense foam and are tethered from the back to the top of the lockers to discourage toppling forward and/or theft (neither of which seems likely, but it made the instructor feel better). Im inclined to make the basic rectangular boxes for the reflex mod with the ports facing forward. The downside is that the approximately 8 of additional height will only exacerbate the top-heaviness already present. The advantages are easier construction than any angular variation and they would be more readily transferable to other La Scalas if the director is not pleased. Now for something completely different. As a photographer you might be interested in the article at: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/issues/2006/july/indelible.php which described the history behind the attached iconic photo of the Babe.
