  1. A quality 15" 4-ohm high sensitivity driver is needed. Often suggested are the various flavors of the JBL D-130, D140 and similar. I looked for those, coudn't find any 4-ohm, most of them are actually 16. There is a JBL model 2226-G 4-ohm that was suggested to me by a very qualified guy. These are available, but not cheap. You can check jammin' jersey or other dealers in new/used JBL for stock. jammin jersey used JBL page All things considered, the K-33 presently being sold by Klipsch is really pretty good, and the cabinet was built for it as far as internal volume and venting. Only $100 apiece including shipping at Klipsch, dirt cheap IMO. Tom
  2. I knew it was out there somewhere, found it by accident while looking for a 69 Z-28 manifold and carb setup. It's a Yamaha Natural Sound YP-211 with a Shure M95ED cartridge on it. IIRC, it's belt drive, the cartridge is/was almost new when I parked it around 1988. Worth fooling with? I don't think I own any records anymore, but there's a used record store not far from here. Icing on the cake, in the box were the original docs from my 77 Heresy's. Big clasp type envelopes, instructions, brochures, inspection sheets and even my half of the warranty cards. I knew I had to have them somewhere. It was only a few years ago I tossed the boxes, they had fallen apart completely but I think I spotted the styrofoam packing blocks in a big garbage bag in the back corner of the attic. Cool. Tom
  3. Yes. But keep in mind that there's a couple different types of these tweeters when considered from the electrical, sonic points of view. K-77-V is the older, alnico magnet version, has a round magnet. K-77-M is the later square mud magnet variety. Many claim that the alnico sounds better although the mud magnet series is claimed to go higher before pooping out. Tom
  4. Kai, Hit the link in my first post here, it'll take you to the auction, the guy gives the phn #, option to hit and part #, something like $21 per. Tom
  5. easyeyes, I just ran across a gospel CD that I think is cool, way cool. Believe it or not it's by a group named "Blind Boys of Alabama", formed at the Talladega School for the Blind in 1939. This is also known as the Helen Keller School. My wife's people live near there, so I recognized the cover. Hard to believe this group has been in continuous operation since 1939. Anyway, looks like somebody pulled them into a nice studio in California, brought in some really good session players and let them go. There's a track of "Amazing Grace" done to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun" that's really cool. The whole CD sounds kinda raw, like a live recording, but studio made. I'm really enjoying it. Some nice double-bass and steel guitar on there. Somebody up above mentioned Carlos Santana, I was really taken by his Supernatural disc, as many were. Based on that I just bought his new CD Shaman, but was disappointed by it till I got to tracks 9,10,11. Some really cool stuff there, lots of hard pickin. I don't know how he doesn't break strings on his guitar, he hits some of those notes so hard. Tom
  6. Well, I've got my known K-77-V in my Heresey to compare, shouldn't take too long to figure out. Tom
  7. Bally, I sent you an email via your profile here but haven't heard from you? Tom tmoble@earthlink.net
  8. OK, slap me around a little. I just bought these: EV T-35's To put in my DIY LS's. Mostly I bought them because they look exactly like the ones in my virgin 77 Heresy's. I have new K-33-E, old K-55-V and now these EV-T35's along with a set of home built Al K crossovers. Did I do the right thing? Tom BTW, I'm going to buy two new diaphragms so they'll both be the same.
  9. Allan said: "I've seen early 70's vintage Cornwalls with mud magnets on the woofers, so I think the change from Alnico on the woofers must have been in the late 60's or early 70's?" It seems that Klipsch went to mud magnet woofers much earlier than with the mid's and tweets. My 77 Heresy's for example, look to have mud magnet woofers while still retaining the Alnico mid's and tweets. I've never seen a K33 with a round magnet, maybe too much is read into the round vs. square shape of the magnets? I'm not aware of any square alnico's? Anybody see a square alnico magnet? Tom Edit: spell "Allan" correctly
  10. Don't know about K-33-B's, most La Scala's seem to be K-33-E's which are available from Klipsch directly for $100 apiece shipped. hard to beat this deal. 1-800-klipsch Tom
  11. Erik, I also sent an email via the option here on the forum, but have not received a reply or an error msg? Maybe you are out of town? Tom
  12. New K-33's are only $100 apiece including shipping from Klipsch. I bought some recently, sound good to me. Why bother with all that other stuff? Tom
  13. You can still buy the grilles new from Klipsch, part #104015 they're about $26 apiece, as I recall. They'll be covered with black cloth, but there's lots of places to get grille cloth. I've never seen a LS with any other than black, FWIW. Tom
  14. Herd rock maple? Never have seen those. I could really get ionto a set of Blonde maple K-horns. I didn't even jknow they offered maple. Tom
  15. Hmpf. I did the BIN on a pair of tweeters for $60, but the guy hasn't answered my emails yet. I've got a bad feeling abpout this.... He has two others up as singletons also, wonder about that. Tom
  16. kinda funny, there's another guy on there with 4 for a BIN of $395. Sorry. Tom
  17. two of them just went very quick. As soon as I saw them. EV T-35's These look exactly like the K-77-V in my virgin '77 Heresy's. $60 for the pair? Sold now. I can get a diaphragm. Just in time too, I sold the K-77-M's I've been using, need to ship them today. What are those red ones on there? Tom
  18. Looks to me like it's getting more and more obvious that Randy has some axe-grinding deal going here. Give it up, there's nothing there. Al helped me to build his networks when I didn't buy a single thing from him. Even I with my damaged ears can plainly hear that Al's nets sound better than the stock AA's. Schematic, plans, layouts, pictures and parts list with vendor info, help when I had trouble, etc. The suggestion that he's on here pushing his parts is laughable, IMO. And Randy, what have you donated to the community here? Such a nice little pic of Frank Zappa and small-minded criticism of somebody who is actually doing something positive? Thanks but no thanks, I'll pass on that. My 5 year old son came in and wanted to sit on my lap while I was reading the forum the other day, great, we don't see a lot of each other during my work week. He's observant, guess what is the first thing he spots and wants to know all about? Better yet, guess how you turned out in the ensuing explanation about the picture of the guy sitting on the toilet? Any trouble figuring out where the WAF is on that? Tom
  19. title pretty much says it all, I need the the V series for the stuff I've got, have M's. The M's are supposed to be better up top, but I can't hear anything up there anyway. These are pretty nice looking, will trade. Tom
  20. Erik, I have a set of DIY La Scala's and both the factory AA's and Al K's on hand. Even to my non-audiophile ears the difference is clearly audible. I built mine with Al's lower-cost option, it was more of a PITA than anything else, if I had it to do over I would use the Hovlands. My advice: don't be in a hurry if you're buying from Solen in Canada. Tom
  21. another view, amp right side up for once. It sounds the same either way, I've discovered. Edit: bummer, no pic. try again later
  22. the whole shebang, notice the bag of auricaps in the back in front of my old Yamaha CR-620, Klipsch and Al K. crossovers, new 40 watt weller iron, at the very bottom are the disc coupling caps I pulled out along with a couple 716P orange drops.
  23. Here's what mine looks like so far, I've got the Sprague's in and went to 716P for the coupling caps. Those four black ones in front are Pyramids, I also noticed that the orange 30uf PS caps had a tiny little pyramid logo on them, but no brand name. I've got a bunch of Auricaps to replace the Pyramids and the ones on the phono preamp, but looks like I'll need more. As you'll notice, my digital camera is a POS. Tom
  24. They are the two AX-7's on the left, looking down from the top. Make sure they are AX-7's, when I got my Eico it had a phono AX-7 and one of the AU-7's reversed. Didn't work so hot. They look a lot alike so it's easy to make this mistake. Tom
