  1. A guy on the board here has a single K-400. His name here is something like "bigdnfay." IIRC, he wanted somewhere around $150 for it. He had sold the other to somebody for a center channel project. Look him up, he was wanting to sell it not long ago. Tom (later) found his email address in my email folders. email me at tmoble@earthlink.net if you want it. I wouldn't feel right about posting his email here without asking first.
  2. There will be plenty on ebay between now and then. set up a search deal on ebay that sends you an email every time something named "lascala" or "la scala" gets listed. I did and I was amazed at how often they came up. Tom
  3. Gil, www.google.com May it reign forever! Tom
  4. Gil, you might try this: http://www.electrovoice.com/Electrovoice/EVFiles.nsf/speakweb?Openview&Restricttocategory=datasheet at: http://www.electrovoice.com/ Tom
  5. doesn't really sound all that low rent to me.... Tom
  6. You might try digging around on this site, they have an amazing amount of stuff and I think they're a JBL dealer. Check the used section too. Lots of stuff on there. http://www.jamminjersey.com/ Tom This message has been edited by Tom Mobley on 06-14-2002 at 09:02 PM
  7. I bought a pair of Heresy's HDBR new in early 78, undoubtably these were built in fall/winter 77, came with the rectangular logo. Have K-55-V's dated Sept of 77. I was at the dealers when the boxes came in, the logos were already on them. $460 as I recall, used to have the original receipt, can't turn it up just now. Tom
  8. TPD, Thank you very much Sir! You gave me courage to tear apart a K-55-V that I recently acquired. It had white mineral build up in the screen, looked like it been left a little too close to the bathtub or something. Got to looking closely, I could see a hunk of the white stuff loose, flopping around in there. Emboldened by your demo, I tore it down, unsoldered the diaphragm, lo and behold: the area around the phase plug (I believe it's called) was plugged with the stuff. Very little on the front of the diaphragm, though. Whisked it off the diaphragm with a soft paintbrush, cleaned out the plug area with a brass brush with some high pressure air, and back together with it. Coolness. The two halves of it are located by long dowel pins, can't hardly get it wrong. The pins guide the halves together while assembling so the voice coil doesn't get smashed. It's not very big. Fire it up tomorrow in one of my Heresy's, they're about to lose their virginity. Untouched since I bought them new in Spring '78. Thanks again for posting. Tom BTW, did see ATLAS cast into the inner housing.
  9. Well, there's stuff in your post that I don't really understand. I'm not an EE, just an "almostaME." At any rate, I ordered the K-33's from Klipsch today. Discovered they have the little brackets for the back of the K-400's too, got them also. We'll see what shows up. Thanks for taking time to reply, Tom
  10. Thanks, John. I guess I'll order up the K-33's on Monday morning. Last of the Solen caps they shorted me came in yesterday, I've got the K-400's and some other stuff from a member here, the boxes are supposed to be shipped from Chicago, this deal might actually happen soon. One thing for sure, I could have bought some cheaper, lots cheaper. Oh well.... Tom
  11. John, Thanks for taking time to reply. I thought I was taking djk's advice. It appears to me that there's some confusion (probably mine) or poorly understood stuff about the K-33/3" slot combo. I thought the perceived increase in impedance was due mostly to the 3" slot, others seem to think it's the result of being horn-loaded, possibly it's due to to some poorly defined interaction of the two. In any case, I was planning to go to a 6" slot if using a JBL driver. I thought this was the whole point of going to a different driver, to get rid of the 3" slot. It would certainly be interesting to do an A-B comparison of the earlier and later KHorns with the two different driver/slot combos to get a little better idea of the difference. Now I'm sort of dimly starting to understand that the bass response of the LS's I'm putting together is really determined by the horn length/mouth size combination rather than the quality of the woofer as I had previously supposed. I'm still fairly new to this whole deal and had gotten the impression that the reason the 3" slot arrived on the scene was to allow the use of a less expensive driver while still retaining acceptable response. I thought, "OK, get a better driver, go back to the 6" slot, get better tunes." Looks like it's not that simple, too bad. Comments, anybody? Tom
  12. Brett, Frans Thanks for your replies. Brett, We posted at the same time to the minute. I had found the current model deal for the 2226G, looks like a good choice. Thanks for the link to Jammin' Jersey, that's an interesting site. $200 apiece, ouch. Frans, do your LaScala's have the 7.62cm or 15.24cm throat? I wouldn't expect a speaker that sounds good in one to also sound good in the other. If the K-33 worked in your boxes, I expect you have the 7.62, right? I'm going to enlage the slot to six inches in mine, if I do this deal. Hoiwever, it's not looking good due to expense. Thanks for your time replying. Tom
  13. djk, Looking through the JBL obsolete website I don't see the 2226. I do see the 2220 and 2225, they're both 8 ohm. The 2220 has an SPL of about 101dB @1w/1m and is 8 ohm. It's been suggested that it matchs up pretty good, does it sound reasonable that the 4 ohm increase in impedance would lower it's output by about 3dB, making it quite close to the K-33 at 96-97? JBL mentions that it's designed for use in horns, high effiency, all that. The 2225 is about 97dB SPL, but again 8 ohms, going by the guesstimate above it might be around 2-3 dB down to a K-33, not the right direction at all. What do you think of all this? Any validity to that theory about the 4 ohm difference equating to about 3dB in SPL? I've seen it written that 3dB is just aboout enough to hear? Any comments from Al, Gil, John, HornEd, et al? Tom <Later> OIC, it's not an Obs model, it's a current model. Duh. Those seemingly standardized JBL performance graphs are kinda nice. Anybody know where there's a graph like that for a K-33? djk, got any idea whether the horn loaded response curve looks like the plain curve or the vented box curve? The vented box curve on those looks pretty good. Need acrobat viewer, but: http://www.jblpro.com/pages/pub/components/2226.pdf This message has been edited by Tom Mobley on 05-29-2002 at 03:46 AM
  14. I just can't get myself to like the K-33 with 13x3 slot deal. Some point out that opening up the slot to 6x13 allows (requires) use of other woofers. Mentioned are the JBL D-130, D-140, the 2220, Trusonics I can't find or afford. JBL characterizes the 2220 as a high-effiency driver. I also see some nice 2225's on ebay, but JBL seems to think they are high power handling models, the effiency is not mentioned. I'm currently ready to buy woofers, and I'm just plain having a hard time believing that a K-33 playing through that small slot is going to sound as good as a nice JBL or similar playing through the 6" slot. Substituting is attractive, but one of the things I don't see being mentioned much is the impedance differences. I've seen the K-33 characterized as a 4-ohm driver, looks like all these others are 8-16 ohms depending on the exact model. Is any of this right and if so, how does this affect the deal? Anybody got any wisdom here? Just stick with the K-33 and forget about it? One guy here mentioned using a Pyramid 15" driver, it does close to 100dB at 1 watt, but not one of the names usually bandied about. Thanks for any time and thought given, Tom
  15. On most of them the bottom comes off, turn one upside down, see if there aren't a bunch of screws. The whole bottom plate comes off revealing a hole shaped right to get the woofer out. On a few there's some way they come out from the top, I haven't seen this style myself. Tom
  16. Dude, I see you're not easily intimidated. You are kicking some serious wooden butt there. They look great. Look better than great. I hope I have the guts to do that some day. My wood-working buddies don't owe me that many favors, I'll be doing most of it myself. Tom
  17. DizRotus, Gil sent me a jpeg of the schematic for an E network earlier, I forwarded it to the email address in your profile here. Tom
  18. I think this is a set of crossovers for the industrial LS's: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1352998343 Looks like bi-wire-able or bi-amp-able or something like that. Tom
  19. Jeez, my tax return just showed up yesterday. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1352398931 Original owner offering 2 KHorns with free Cornwall center speaker for the "buy it now" price of $1750. Criminy. Let's see, I-10 to I-5, I-5 to Portland, I've driven it a few times.... (edit) And here's a single Cornwall in SFO, pick it up on the way. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1352167835 This message has been edited by Tom Mobley on 05-12-2002 at 01:41 AM
  20. Belle's fans, check it out. Not perfect, but not bad. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1352390649 I'm in PHX, could probably be talked into/bribed to go pick these up for somebody on the right coast, SLC is not that far. Tom
  21. HDBR, yeah I realize that the intrinsic value is there, but these speakers were listed with an initial bid of $999, high bid was $1,009, not close to $2000. This is the second time they've been listed and not drawn significant action. At the end of the day, stuff is only worth what it'll sell for in a marketplace. And ebay, with all it's failings, does constitute a marketplace. Claims of value above marketplace price are largely theoretical. Actually, (and I'll admit that I've not been following Khorn stuff in detail all that long) the highest I've seen a pair go for was about $3K. Obviously, there may have been sales I didn't see. Of course, all of the above is just my opinion, anyone else may have a different opinion. I'm so tempted to buy those, but I live in a small house and it's just not practical. My interest in that pair was mostly based on the possibility of re-selling them for a profit. Based on recent action, that doesn't look all that promising. Tom (BTW, your Heresy's are just gorgeous)
  22. His reserve was in the $2K area, too much. I think he was thinking about re-listing them with a $1500 reserve, still too much for me. I would give $1100-$1250 for them. I think he'll just sit on them, they've been in his garage for about 20 years, go for another 20? I'm going to contact him again, he only lives a couple miles from me. Are you interested at those prices? I could ask him if it's OK to give you his phone number. You know, I think these things are really pretty nice for what they are, but the theater model deal detracts value, they're not very nice looking with no tops or sides. this stuff could be built as HDBR points out above, but I wonder if would be any cheaper by the time a guy was done. I dunno. Tom
  23. Hmpf. Hadn't thought about 8ohm--4ohm deal, must be why I posted here. Nak amps are really good though, might be ok anyway. Probably be a 25w/side amp at 8 ohms though. Think I'll drag a set off ebay, see how it works. I can always use them in the computer room or something. Tom
  24. fini, you apparently haven't been driving in the morning rush hour in Phx. Routine to see drivers eating breakfast, reading the paper, fixing hair and makeup, etc. Although, I was thinking about KSB1.1 in this particular case. kenratboy, I've got a Nakamichi 50W/side amp. Probably drive it with a Nak CD deck or tape deck. I'm up on that flying speaker deal, friend was injured back in the early 80's, had a pretty nasty head injury from a flying speaker. It's 70 Chevelle, my daily driver, currently equipped with original AM radio and center dash speaker. Anybody got wisdom on using ksb1.1's or pair of Quintets? Quintets are quite a bit smaller but the 1.1's go down into the 50Hz range, Quintets quit at about 100Hz. Got a feeling the 1.1's would sound a lot better. Tom
