I built 2 subs to go with my Cornwalls for LFE in home theater. NHT-1259 12" drivers and Parts-Express 3 ft^3 enclosures powered by an Anthem MCA20. The volume of 3ft^3 is perfect for the 1259. These guys make your pants breathe during FX explosions in HT. What ever you do, dont sell the Cornwalls. When I was a kid(16) my first speakers were a pair of Electro-voice Arisocrats. They were a 3 way horn system very similar to the Cornwalls, but 12 . I traded them for a set of Bose 901s, buying into the direct/reflected BS. Less than one year later, I got the Cornwalls. I hope that explains something about Bose. Chuck

This past spring, I built a pair of sub-woofers to go with my 71 Cornwalls. I used NHT1259 12 drivers and pre-built 3ft^3(1 MDF) enclosures from Parts-Express. They are powered by a dedicated Anthem MCA-20 amplifier. All I can say is that it was worth every penny - for not only HT, but music too! This added to the Cornwalls makes for one awesome sound.

Builder, What Im thinking about is a center channel to go with my current Cornwalls. Considering that the pictures of your La Scalas are just gorgeous, I would want something just as magnificent. That would include mitered corners and oak veneer. Beyond that Im open to you suggestions. Since the top of a Cornwall is too narrow (and too high) for a good-sized TV, this speaker would need to be put on its side to serve as a stand. Do you see any problem with re-aligning the drivers (see jpg) so they are aligned on the opposite axis to a standard? What would you suggest? Chuck

What are you going to charge for a Cornwall cabinet? Just ballpark!

The Volume and the Port are the mechanical equivalent to Capacitance and Inductance in an electronic circuit. Put them in parallel and they resonate at a certain frequency. If you change the Volume, you must change the Port to tune the box to the same frequency. The shape of the box does not change the tuned frequency, although a way out of proportion box can have other ramifications. Check out some of the speaker design software that's shareware. The Radio Shack book by Weems is a good introduction, if they still publish it. A very detailed book is the Loudspeaker Cookbook by Dickason.

Further evidence that Bose is engaging in a gender based kickback scheme! LOL! Im sorry to hear that they have to go. I fully understand. At my house, my Cornwalls are referred to as the Woodstock Speakers.

Whoops... I thought something was wrong. I'm still intrigued by the concept of a direct radiator design with this level of efficiency.

John, I got the T/S specs for the JBL 2123J from the JBL web site and calculated the F3 as > 100Hz for a flat alignment. Am I missing something or would you intend to use a sub with this driver? Chuck

On the solid state side: I run a Bryston 2B-LP(60W/ch) on my Cornwalls. Over the years (30) these speakers have had a lot of amps connected to them: Crown, SAE, and others. The 2B has the most solid low end and best definition of any I've used. You can sometime see this amp on EBay for around $300.

Myke99, Ive often wondered what a set of Cornwalls would sound like in exactly the type of enclosure that youre contemplating. Im sure that things like rounded corners to minimize edge diffractions and offset drivers on the baffle would improve the imaging of the drivers. The later point is one of the reasons that I believe that the earlier Cornwalls with the vertical horn orientation sound better than the horizontal. Klipschguy has a cool idea about getting the drivers measured for their T/S specs. Id love to see that info posted! Have fun and keep us up to date on the progress of your project! Chuck
