  1. The DSSF3 Light version at $83 is not a bad deal!
  2. This company YMEC makes a number of different sound analyzer products. At work we used their RAL product to determine the frequency harmonics of a squealing brake system. Great product! http://www.ymec.com/products/dssf3e/outline.htm#list
  3. I built 2 subs to go with my Cornwalls for LFE in home theater. NHT-1259 12" drivers and Parts-Express 3 ft^3 enclosures powered by an Anthem MCA20. Not a cheap solution, but I've been very happy with the results and it was a snap to put together with the pre-built enclosures. 1259: http://www.madisound.com Enclosure: http://www.partsexpress.com
  4. Tom, The NHT 1259 can be found at: http://www.madisound.com $150 each The Parts Express enclosures at: http://www.partsexpress.com $193 each Part# 300-732 The Amp at: http://www.anthemav.com paid $900 at local dealer Model MCA-20 $1596 Total The cool thing is that all you have to do is drill the holes for the drivers and terminals and fill the box with dampening material. The volume of 3ft^3 is perfect for the 1259. These guys make your pants breathe during FX explosions in HT. What ever you do, dont sell the Cornwalls. When I was a kid(16) my first speakers were a pair of Electro-voice Arisocrats. They were a 3 way horn system very similar to the Cornwalls, but 12 . I traded them for a set of Bose 901s, buying into the direct/reflected BS. Less than one year later, I got the Cornwalls. I hope that explains something about Bose. Chuck
  5. This past spring, I built a pair of sub-woofers to go with my 71 Cornwalls. I used NHT1259 12 drivers and pre-built 3ft^3(1 MDF) enclosures from Parts-Express. They are powered by a dedicated Anthem MCA-20 amplifier. All I can say is that it was worth every penny - for not only HT, but music too! This added to the Cornwalls makes for one awesome sound.
  6. These seem very similar to the Fostex horns also from Japan. http://www.fostex.co.jp/int/pages/sets/prodset.htm
  7. Builder, What Im thinking about is a center channel to go with my current Cornwalls. Considering that the pictures of your La Scalas are just gorgeous, I would want something just as magnificent. That would include mitered corners and oak veneer. Beyond that Im open to you suggestions. Since the top of a Cornwall is too narrow (and too high) for a good-sized TV, this speaker would need to be put on its side to serve as a stand. Do you see any problem with re-aligning the drivers (see jpg) so they are aligned on the opposite axis to a standard? What would you suggest? Chuck
  8. What are you going to charge for a Cornwall cabinet? Just ballpark!
  9. The Volume and the Port are the mechanical equivalent to Capacitance and Inductance in an electronic circuit. Put them in parallel and they resonate at a certain frequency. If you change the Volume, you must change the Port to tune the box to the same frequency. The shape of the box does not change the tuned frequency, although a way out of proportion box can have other ramifications. Check out some of the speaker design software that's shareware. The Radio Shack book by Weems is a good introduction, if they still publish it. A very detailed book is the Loudspeaker Cookbook by Dickason.
  10. Further evidence that Bose is engaging in a gender based kickback scheme! LOL! Im sorry to hear that they have to go. I fully understand. At my house, my Cornwalls are referred to as the Woodstock Speakers.
  11. I built 2 subs to go with my Cornwalls for LFE in home theater this past Spring. NHT-1259 12" drivers and Parts-Express 3 ft^3 enclosures. Does require a power amp too. I've been very happy with the results and it was a snap to put together with the pre-built enclosures. 1259: http://www.madisound.com Enclosure: http://www.partsexpress.com
  12. Whoops... I thought something was wrong. I'm still intrigued by the concept of a direct radiator design with this level of efficiency.
  13. John, I got the T/S specs for the JBL 2123J from the JBL web site and calculated the F3 as > 100Hz for a flat alignment. Am I missing something or would you intend to use a sub with this driver? Chuck
  14. On the solid state side: I run a Bryston 2B-LP(60W/ch) on my Cornwalls. Over the years (30) these speakers have had a lot of amps connected to them: Crown, SAE, and others. The 2B has the most solid low end and best definition of any I've used. You can sometime see this amp on EBay for around $300.
  15. Myke99, Ive often wondered what a set of Cornwalls would sound like in exactly the type of enclosure that youre contemplating. Im sure that things like rounded corners to minimize edge diffractions and offset drivers on the baffle would improve the imaging of the drivers. The later point is one of the reasons that I believe that the earlier Cornwalls with the vertical horn orientation sound better than the horizontal. Klipschguy has a cool idea about getting the drivers measured for their T/S specs. Id love to see that info posted! Have fun and keep us up to date on the progress of your project! Chuck
  16. The key to altering the box dimensions is box volume and port tuning. If you maintain the same box volume and tune the cabinet to the same frequency via the port, the output characteristics of the woofer should remain the same. I suggest getting a copy of The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook SIXTH EDITION by Vance Dickason. I consider this book a bible on loudspeaker design.
  17. Schematic sent to me by Klipsch (Today) of the Type B Cornwall Network!
  18. The schematic of the B Type does not show the polarity of the speaker connections. I believe that the B is non-inverted on all three drivers, while the B2 had the horns inverted? 1971 Cornwalls with rebuilt B Crossovers
  19. 1. What Heritage speakers have you owned, currently own, or want to own? Cornwalls, New in 1972 ($369/each RB) 2. What was your age when you first purchased a Heritage series loudspeaker? 20 3. What is your current age? 50 4. Why did you choose Heritage loudspeakers over another Klipsch model? Cornwall was the most I could afford in 72 5. If you currently own some Heritage loudspeakers, and could purchase some more Klipsch speakers(new or used), which ones would you purchase? Why? Id like a single La Scala or Belle for the center 6. Do you think the upcoming Jubilee should become part of the "Heritage" line, since it was also designed by PWK? Yes
  20. Lynnm, Yep, loose screws and a high end thats probably dead above 17kHz. Ive got Ziggy Stardust to thank for that, along with the blown tweeter in 72! Chuck
  21. They have only been opened 3 and 4 times over their lives and all for good reasons: once for a blown tweeter early on, once for inspection, and twice for crossover cap changes to Hovlands. I dont have parties and say Guys why dont we have a few beers and open up the Cornwalls. I can detect a couple of screws that dont fit as snug as they once did and was just looking for suggestions. Ill probably just use a slightly larger screw the next time I need to open them for repair.
  22. I have removed the backs off my Cornwalls so many times that I fear that I will need to go to larger screws the next time I remove them. Is there a better way to do this? Something like a threaded mounting stud fit into a pre-drilled hole and then a hex screw?
  23. Thanks, you gave me the missing piece of the puzzle. I admit that I never knew that the original Cornwall was horizontal. I had always thought that the Cornwall II was the redo into the horizontal with the original being vertical. If the II was a failed experiment with a reversion to the original, it all makes more sense.
  24. I have no doubt that the verticals were available, but let me amplify on what I mean by choice. A dealer, given the choice to order the standard model or a special order model, is going to order the standard. He is also, in most cases, not going to give up demo floor space to have both types. In time, knowledge of the older model fades. I dont call that a choice, except to the enlightened. The question I would like answered is whether the horizontal horn Cornwall was intended to be an improvement. Or, was it done for other reasons. PWK could have designed the original that way. And my point is: Why didnt he?
  25. I can agree with you that horizontal dispersion will be greater with a horizontal horn, but with the horns only 20 or so off the floor, with the speaker on its side, you will be just as far off-axis from a sitting position. Over the years Ive tried the speaker on its side and it stinks by comparison. The vertical horn imaging is by far better. The fact the older vertical model had a shorter production run is by no means a measure of higher quality in the newer speaker. Popular implies that there was a choice, which there wasnt. Top-Heavy? Even on casters, as mine are, it would take a truck to tip them over! The bottom line Id take either over 90% of whats out there and I hope to keep them running for another 30 years.
