  1. I'm thinking that damping and related impedance issues are the key to understanding the benefits of bi-wiring. But hey, i'm just a kid.
  2. Wow... Man... Geez... I don't know what to say. It's all still just theory, isn't it?
  3. I really don't have any specific plans for it other than sawpping it out between several differing component compliments. I'm just fishing for a general idea of where it stands in the grand sceme of things. Let's say, by comparison to an Adcom GFA545 or B&K St2140. Regards, John.
  4. Great review, Tom. I enjoyed reading it. I've been running my '57 Khorns with my Jolida 202A for about 3 months. Though i've opted for pre-conditioning the sound with an external EQ before the Jolida, the end result is extremely pleasing to MY ears. Heck, since i've been running this set-up, I haven't had the urge to swap components and try something else. Too me, everything else fails by comparison. Regards, John.
  5. Hello all, I have a chance to trade, even up, for one stock Hafler DH-200. The value of which would be approx $150-175. Having read mixed reviews of these particular pieces around the web, I'm now having second thoughts about going through with it. Heh.... Truth be told. The appeal of trying something "new" may ultimately win me over. It's my nature. But...i'm not completely without control. I still don't want to waste money/good gear on box of inadequate parts. Who does? So....I ask humbly to those in the know.....is it worth a try? Regards, John.
  6. Have you sold either units, yet? I haven't been able to link to either of the auction sites to see what the selling prices were. If you would be so kind as to let me know what you're asking for each piece, it would be appreciated. Regards, John
  7. Great pic, Clu. Lots of decent, well mannered freaks floating around in there. .....WHO are the last 2? I'm clueless. Regards, John
  8. Maron! You never knew light could be measured in dB?
  9. Huh? That's it? Aww hell....i'm in like Flynn. Ha Ha Ha J/K (no offense AF) Thanks for your reply DJK. I didn't know that about the throat size. In which manner is it too big? I have them coupled to my K-5-Js and they absolutely sing. For the record. Please, Don't take me wrong here. When I say something sounds good, though it is only my opinion, it is in direct comparison to many other speakers that I frequently listen to. I have most of the worthwhile Klipsch models and literally hundreds of other timeless classics that I change in and out like some people change their socks. I just don't want to give any of you the impression that i'm another one of those "Oh My God, this sounds so much better than my boombox", kinda guys. I'm not. I'm just trying to understand why these 1823M sound so damn good in these K-5-Js. In all fairness to the University SAHFs that came stock, those puppies have crazy range. I had them putting out sound to the extremes of the audble range. Albeit a very non-linear output, they were still making noise. It's too bad they don't sound very good with the K-5-J. Thank you, gentlemen, for your responses. It's much appreciated. Regards, John.
  10. Thanks for your input, John. Yeah, 6dB is alot....even for me. I do see myself engineering a few sets of different crossovers for my Khorns. I'm just not technically advanced nor physically ready to undertake such an endeavor. Maybe by this fall. We'll see. My "57s are worth it. IMHO, I think the pre-"63 Khorn is an excellent foundation by which to run various horn/driver/crossover combinations. I'm constantly pondering the possibilities which they have to offer. I love it. Whoever said that K-horns are an "end-all" speaker wasn't joking. They are amazing critters to say the least. I can see why it might take someone a lifetime to get bored with them. Regards, John.
  11. Ha Ha Ha Good one Arthurs... Lest we not forget the traditional jello shots. Yummmmmm. Not sure how pudding can top that. Until I can get lit from a cup of pudding, I feel Jello to be the appropriate meduim. Besides....think of the fascinating nature of Jello in all it's physical glory and inherantly superior opaque demeanor. Can it REALLY be beat? I mean.... come on. The way it decelerates quanta to a predetermined specific frequencies while not compromising it's general consistency is a quality that pudding could only dream about. Think about it... Bill Cosby ain't got nuttin on me. "Viva la Jello. Regards, John.
  12. LOL. What can I say? It's all about association. Given the nature of the up-coming festive holiday, certain shades of specifically branded, gelanitized fluids have made their way into the eyes of the mainsteam media making it impossible for me to concentrate about anything else but the tone that is set by the afore mentioned marketing vultures. So what am I to do other than to succumb to my maddening urges? With much green, John.
  13. I'm sorry. I love a good pudding as much as the next person. Truly, I do. But.... nothing offers up the level of transparacy and overall clarity like our good old jiggly friend. That's right boys and girls. You guessed it! JELLO. Tried True and Timeless... Regards, John.
  14. John- I didn't know that about the 18xx series. Do you happen to know any specific differences between the two? I have to agree with your statement regarding misapplication of drivers. But i'm wondering... Other than impeadance, operating range, and sensitivity, are there any other factors that could be relevant in deciding proper application? I've been running a set of 1823Ms' in my K-5-Js through the stock WE-2 networks of my '57 Khorns. They sound great. IMO. Alot better than the University SAHF landmines that were in there. The kicker is, that in order to get them to sound proper, i've had to run the source input signal into an old AudioControl model 520 to bring the mid-band down by 6 decibles before it reaches the Jolida 202A. I know that sounds crazy, but it really works good and I want to keep the WE2s bone stock, so trimming the incoming mids only made sense. Is this considered misapplication? I've made myself believe that it's only experimentation, but maybe a reality check is in order for me. Tom- I have a pair of SentryIII crossovers that I was considering shoe-horning into my Khorns just for $hits and giggles. Maybe this is just what the doctor ordered. Can I pick your brain about them? I enjoy learning as much about my gear as possible. I got my set of 1823Ms from a pair of big-ole white EV 6040s, that I picked up from an old rock and roller. Remember the 6040s? He was running them as tweeters.... Is that funny or what? How ironic you should say that about their range. I mean they are, after all, specifically made as a mid-range driver. Even says it right on the nomenclature. Why would you want to use it as a tweeter? Ha Ha. Am I right to assume that the reasoning behind using the horns you mentioned is directly related to keeping a loudspeaker in a 2 way configuration? That would make alot of sense.IMO Anyway..... He asked what I was going to do with those big-ole bastards. I grinned and replied,"I dunno...might just strap them to the top of my Bronco for one hellofa mobile PA system." .....I think he belived me. ha ha ha Regards, John.
  15. Hey gang, I'm wondering if any of you could shed some light on why these EV 18xx series drivers are shunned in the HiFi community? I realize they are for pro applications, but does that somehow detract from their overall sound quality? Just curious. Regards, John.
  16. SDFan- Yes sir, variety is the spice of life. Wheelman- Chris Olivia will not be forgotten. Joe- O.K. my friend, i'll end your suffering.... and the winner is......Russ Ballard "Voices" Lord love a one hit wonder. Regards, John.
  17. Damon- right on the money. Good call. Todd- Yep, you got it, them are the dudes. Joe-......you ARE the man. Ha Ha J/K. I used to be into the speed metal scene...back in the day. Really appreciated the Belladona/Spitz thing until they kinda fizzled out. Or..sold out....whichever. Either way, everything from State of Euphoria and earlier, just flat out rocks. ....or i'll steal your feathers like I stole your socks. Ha Ha. So your kinda stumped on that one, eh Joe? Tell you what, i'll give you the artists intials. RB So what about the others on the list? Most are practically household names. Shall I offer up some clues? Regards, John.
  18. Isn't Alex going to do some time for roughing up that cop? I like Rush in Rio. Great story behind how that show came to pass. Almost didn't. I have 2 things to say 'bout this show. 1. The crowd is too loud. Not just a little overbearing, mind you, we're talking excessive to the extreme IMO. But, what the hell..... I would scream my head off too. (FWIW. it was deliberately engineered that way to give you the "in the crowd" feeling.) oh boy... 2. What in the heck took them so long to put a concert on DVD? I mean sheesh....come on fellas. O.K. My apologies for running OT. Back to the subject at hand. Here's a few of my favorite lyrics from off the top of my head. -"Ha Ha Charade you are" -"I'm not a number, i'm a free man...and my life is my own now. Don't care, where the past was. I know where i'm going" -"You would still be alive, if you drove a cadillac" -"What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it gives forth a sound. It's got wires that vibrate and give music. What can this thing be that i've found" -"Look to the sky just before you die...it's the last time you will." -"Don't look back, look straight ahead. Don't turn away the voices said." -"Talking to you, is like clapping with one hand." (remember that T2K?) Ha ha. -"Don't need money. Don't need fame. Don't need a ticket to ride this train." -"Take me back to my boat on the river. I need to go down. Won't you let me go down?" -"I've done a bit of smuggling. I've run my share of grass. I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast. Never meant to last..never meant to last." -"Head out on the highway. Looking for adventure...." -"And i'm going to look for you, at your party, because all the time I know that i can find you there...and i'm gonna dance with you, hmmph, one more time...ohhh ohhh yeah" -"You take my life and i'll take yours too, you fire your musket and i'll run you through. So when your waiting for next attack, you'd better stand, there's no turning back." -"Killing time is appropriate to make amends and so for the rest we say, SO WHAT" -"Stand up, you know what it means. Wake up, time to live your dreams" -"Bust out, with something that you've never seen. Tripped out on a thing called reality. You react, oh so typically...your wasting my time." Care to guess the artists? I'll bet no-one can get them all right. Regards, John
  19. Hi there, Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on the situation. Very cool. Keep up the good work. Learning the art/craft of home theater set up can be a daunting task to be sure. There are just so many options and variables to consider, one can't possibly allocate enough time to address every issue. 'Tis the very nature of the beast, itself. But that's O.K, because for the most part, the payoff for experimentation and knowledgable application is generally worth every bit of effort that you put in. A properly implemented HT can be akin to a religious experience. Keep studying. It's worth it, IMHO. As far as a good recording to hear nuances and such, I would suggest either a Sheffield Labs demo disk or any selection that you are completely familiar with. Personally, I've been testing gear with an EV demo disk and Dave Matthews "Some Devil". Works for me. Regards, John.
  20. It has been a cold one..... No doubt about it. There have several days that my dogs want right back in after they're let out. That says alot, considering that they are a Husky/Chow mix. My girls usually stay out as long as I let them. Not so this winter. You said it right, BBB, Brrrrrrrrr! Interesting idea, Indy. Maybe i'll give it a try. Don't know how comfortable I feel about leaving a heater on, unattended, for any length of time. I'll have to give it some thought. I'm thinking that my best bet is to get off my a$$ and get this basement project finished. Then I wont have to worry about it, anymore. Regards, John
  21. Ha Ha.... That would be...how do you say???....NO GOOD. I'm pretty sure my cats would object wearing little kitty sweaters and sleeping in the cold, dark garage. But hey.....they've gotta earn their keep too, right? Ha Ha Ha. hmmmmm. Anyway.... Keeping them off the floor was my first order of business. I simply lined up a dozen old stereo consoles and stacked speakers up about 3 sets high. Each layer was covered with a sheet and each speaker separated by sheets of newspaper. Then I kinda draped old blankets over the lot. I had thought about boxing them up and using dessicant packs like they have at shoe stores, but I couldn't find a source to sell me just a few. Most places i've seen had minimium orders of like 1000 units. I definately don't need 1000 little dessicant packs lying around I might get the munchies really bad and accidentally eat one. Whoops! Aside from finding dry packs, getting boxes for some of these larger sets, might be a problem. ex. (Marantz Imperial 7, Infinity Kappa 9, EV interface D, Dynaco A-50) Just not economically viable, ya know?. Hopefully though, I will be bringing them in by the middle of next month. Then all will be well, again. I'll just heed the above advise and let them all "dry out" before I even attempt to drive them. Regards, John.
  22. Thanks for all of the replies. I appreciate it. When I put them out there, I covered them with sheets and old blankets to keep the dust off them. Do you think this will deter moisture or promote rot? Regards, John.
  23. Great price! Congrats. If your vehicle can't handle them with ease, then maybe a rental van or enclosed trailer is in order. I hauled mine home in an enclosed trailer and had no worries at all. IMO. For that purchase price, it would be worth spending a few extra bucks to rent. Better safe than sorry....I always say. Regards, John.
  24. Hello all, I recently finished building my garage and have been storing some of my loudspeaker collection out there while I complete a "dedicated listening room" in the basement. But, problem is...it's currently an unheated and uninsulated structure. Well, being the proud audio papa that I am, i'm naturally concerned for their well-being. Don't want them to freeze their little tweeters off, or something. Ha Ha... Seriously though, I have several choice sets sitting out there that I would like to keep intact. They are not the pride and joy of my collection, mind you, but many are irreplaceble to one degree or another. I would hate to see them falter or rot due to my negligence. Eeeeeek. Perish the thought. So what to do? I'm coming up dry for information concerning the cold weather and/or non-climate controlled storage of loudspeakers. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards, John.
