  1. Was it Marc's web site: http://www.dsuper.net/~167418/vaud/tubesales.htm
  2. Rob, I have a small tube tester that I can lend you if you want. Let me know if you are interested.
  3. formica, Sorry to hear that it didn't work out. I found another pair of black LaScalas in Montreal, but I am not interested. The owner said they were from 70's and he's asking for $1600 cad. If you are interested, let me know and I will give you his phone number.
  4. Ed, That's the best looking 'dog' that I've ever seen. I currently have the Cornwalls and I would like to get either a pair of Moondogs or DRD amps in the near future. Please let us know how you like the Moondogs with the Cornwalls. Thanks for sharing.
  5. formica, I saw the same pair but had to pass due to more pressing needs. I saw another pair with an asking price of $2500 cdn, so I think $950 is a very good price (and probably you can get them for less). Go for it. It shouldn't be too difficult to recoup your money, if you decide to sell them later. BTW, why by the weekend?
  6. ssh, sorry I can't help you but just wanted say that I am also interested to hear the answer to your questions. I am trying to decide whether to get moondogs (if I can find any) or get new DRDs. In any case, I will have to sell one or both of my Scotts (299A and C - I am keeping the 299B) to finance my purchase.
  7. Frzninvt, I really appreciate it. Are these also '80s? You wouldn't happen to have a digital camera to take some pictures while you are there, would you? Thanks again.
  8. lynnm, I am in the same situation as you are. I've been looking for Khorns for about six months in Montreal but no luck just yet. The owner of a audio shop who sells traded-in speakers remembers seeing a pair three years ago. Another person saw a pair in the local newspaper some time ago but the asking price was $5000CAD. I guess they are harder to come by in Canada. In any case, my search for Khorns turned up a pair of '84 Cornwalls that I am extremely happy with. Good luck...
  9. fini, I also like my CE775 5-disk changer, especially for SACDs, and I intend to keep it. Rega is to see if I can improve the regular CD playback.
  10. I am also curious to hear any first hand comparison on these two units. I was about to get a first generation Rega Planet, but the deal fell through. Now I found a Rega Planet 2000, which will cost me $125 more, but I am wondering if I should wait for an older Rega.
  11. Chris, >>Haven't hooked up the Scott to the Cornwall's yet.<< I can tell you that you are in for a treat. BTW, I have a pair of Dynaco A-35 that I never hooked up to the 299. I'll give them a try.
  12. Thanks again Craig. >>If you want I will give you a great deal on all the Russians caps to put in and Kiwame's to really make that amp sing !!<< I am definetely interested in some Russian capacitors and Kiwame resistors. Probably we should take this offline - I am sending you an email.
  13. Craig, thank you for your suggestions. As you suggested I tried Mag 2 Low, and I don't have to turn the volume as high now. I can definitely live with this level of audible hiss at moderate listening levels, but of course it gets louder as I turn the volume up (5-6 or louder). Is it possible to reduce it any further? So far, I've replaced all the coupling capacitors, two PS filter capacitors and the selenium bridge (also upped the 10ohms 2W resistor after the silicone bridge to 33ohms 5W). All the voltages underneath seem to be right on and I biased it to 55mA. I am using Telefunken 12AX7s and 6BL8s, and Mullard 7189s. This is my favorite amp among the three scotts that I own and I might go all the way with better caps on this one.
  14. When using the phono input on my 299B, there is some low level hiss that increases as I raise the volume. I have unplugged the turntable, but the hiss remains. I have also replaced the 7189 and 6BL8 tubes, but still the same. I've recently replaced the cartridge on my TT to Shure V15-VxMR and I find myself turning the volume up to 12 O'clock position to get normal volume. At this level hiss becomes unacceptably high. One possibility would be to get a high output cartridge so that I wouldn't have to turn the volume so high, but I would prefer to solve the problem. Any idea what might be the causing this, and possible fix for this issue?
  15. That was a class act Craig. That's about how much I paid for my '84 Oiled Walnut Cornwalls in mint condition. They look as good as they sound. I am in the lookout for a pair of Klipschorns now.
  16. Several months ago I was one of the people who believed that speaker wire did not make any difference, until I had my Cornwalls and started to experiment with the cross-connect idea with some mini coax cable that I had at home. I was comparing the coax cross connect speaker wire I built with 12 ga Home Depot wire and I was amazed to be able to hear the difference between these two speaker cables. Each seemed to have its pluses and minuses. I liked the 12 ga HD wire for its warmness, and coax cross connect for its tighter bass.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Then I decided to buy 100 of Belden 89259, as this was the recommended cable by Jon Risch, instead of fooling around with unknown coax that I had at home. Finally, last week I built two 8 Belden 89259 cross connect speaker cables and I have been comparing them with the 12 ga Home Depot cables. One thing that I noticed again is that the bass is tighter. All the vocals and instruments also became more defined and crisper (is this what is called transparency?). However, there seems to be some loss in the warmness of the vocals that I am accustomed to getting from the 12 ga HD cables. In fact, I came to realize that I prefer this warmness to tighter bass. Ive been using these Belden cables for about 50 hours now, but I am not sure if things will improve after a while. It seems like my search for a speaker wire that keeps the warmness of the vocals, but tightens the bass and improves the clarity of the instruments still continues.
  17. I also have a Sony SACD-CE775 that I am quite happy with. I just found a 1988 Rega Planet that I am considering as an upgrade. I would be interested to hear from others who had a chance to listen to the Rega Planet and Sony SACD players. In particular, is Rega a significant upgrade to Sony CE775?
  18. Kelly, Thanks for the the quick reply and the great links. Yes, this week has been very exciting for me - first the Cornwalls then the Thorens. I have a Shure V15-Type IV cartridge that I put on, but need to read some to set it up properly.
  19. BTW, Kelly - I picked up a Thorens 125 MK II with SME 3009 from the same person that I got the Cornwalls. Do you have any specific tips for this TT?
  20. I wish it was possible to see who is replying to whom ... at times it is confusing. Anyhow, my Cornwalls are in the basement on a suspended hardwood floor. Until now I have not paid attention to wire/interconnects/etc. Cables between the CD palyer and Amp are gold plated RS A/V cable.
  21. Thank you all for your excellent suggestions. This forum is really a great forum, with knowledgeable members who are kind enough to help out the others. My other speakers KLH Model 12 which are acoustic suspension are sitting on 8" risers and I am getting very tight bass with both of the 299s. Instruments and vocals are not very well defined on KLH though. I am hoping that Cornwalls will surpass them in all aspects. Actually I am getting a lot of bass from Cornwalls (at times I even think it is too much) but it is not crisp and tight. So I am not interested in quantity but quality. A lot of the music I listen to (Jazz) do not have heavy bass, but once in a while when the bass does not sound as it should, it spoils the whole experience. I will first start with risers and then the speaker wire/placement tweaks. I can experiment with different capacitors in the amps as well but I will leave that for later. I prefer no to replace the crossovers, or modify the speakers in any way. If the Scott+Cornwall combination does to not work out, I would rather find another amp that will have a better synergy with Cornwalls. Thank you all once again for all your help.
  22. I am finally a proud owner of 84 walnut Cornwalls. I picked them up two days ago and they are in very good condition, except the velcro holding the grills has come off of the grills completely. Any suggestions here?? I will also follow Andys (HDBRbuilder) recommendation from one of the earlier posts to treat them with boiled linseed oil at the first opportunity. Now, how do they sound? I first hooked them up to my Scott 299A and I am really impressed by the clarity and the smoothness of the mids and highs, however I find the bass to be loose. Then I connected them to the higher powered 299C and although the bass has improved, I feel there is still room for improvement. The 299A has Mullard 7189 tubes and all the other tubes are Teles. For 299C, 7591s are HHcott brand and the other tubes are again Teles. The speaker wire I am using is a 12ga Home Depot wire. My next project will be to replace the speaker wire with Belden 89259. The placement of the speakers is not perfect either. They are about 6 feet away from the rear wall. Placing them closer to the corner and replacing the speaker wire with Belden 89259 will probably improve the bass but I am wondering how significant this improvement will be. Id love to hear from other Scott owners about their experiences with Cornwalls. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
  23. Dean,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> My heart goes out to you and your family. I wish <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Austin and his friends speedy recovery.
  24. Hofy, I've done that several times within last 6 months. I paid about $150 in advertising costs so far and all I got was a single Heresy for $40. I also found a pair of '84 Cornwalls for $500 that I am still thinking about. Good luck.
