  1. That little bit is all it needs. It will vibrate at certain frequencies and drive you nuts!
  2. It's the edges that comes loose on the dustcaps...so, pushing in the center doesn't really do anything. Check the edges on the dustcap... sometimes you can get a fingernail under it...if so, it needs to be removed and re-glued. I used 5 minute epoxy, so it will never come off as you can't really rebuild these drivers. (See my other posts on how this was done on my 5.5's) I also have some excellent condition OEM k-31-K woofers from a KLF 30 if you want to replace the entire woofer. I think 2 are spoken for, another one that's pending, but I have at least one that's still available for sure. Let me know.
  3. Modern technology= trying to think for you...but failing miserably!
  4. Great condition amplifier/preamp. It comes from a smoke and pet free home and has spent its entire life while I owned it in a protected stereo rack connected through a monster power conditioner. I am the second owner. Perfect face, side and back. The first owner must have had a seizure while removing some equipment, because there are scratches on the top metal case. You could repaint it, but I always had something above it, so it wasn't an issue. No remote. (You can pick up a new one for $20-$30 I never bothered to get one as this was always in my dining room set to background listening levels) Garage audition available at time of purchase to verify correct functionality. (Also selling my Rotel 2 ch. amp) Location: 60511 Chicago Burbs Price: $200 for Members Not interested in shipping at this point. There's one on the Bay currently for $360 +$45 shipping Most of the ones recently sold were in the $250-$350 range.
  5. Excellent condition amplifier. It comes from a smoke and pet free home and has spent its entire life in a protected stereo rack connected through a power conditioner. Garage audition available at time of purchase to verify correct functionality. I do have a RB 1070 amplifier available as well. (Also selling sold my Rotel RX 1050) Location: 60511 Chicago Burbs Price: $290 for Members Not interested in shipping at this point.
  6. See if you can find yourself a copy of "Picasa 3" It was a free photo editor, but no longer "supported" by google... but I still use it. It's simple and does everything the amateur photographer needs it to do.... plus a whole lot more! I think they no longer support it because it allowed you to keep your pictures on your computer without uploading everything to the cloud... like they want you to do nowadays!
  7. OEM Klipsch dustcap removed from the 10" woofer on a KG 5.5
  8. Oh, and if you want a perfect match, I have one!
  9. https://thelordofbass.com/product-category/loud-speaker-parts/dust-caps/ They aren't a perfect match but they are great! If you do all 4 it will look perfect. They are only a couple-o-dollars each.
  10. Well, I had a moment to put them up against my RF 83's, needless to say, they did not unseat my 83's. I would hope not considering the price differences when they were new. (But, you never know! I never only judge a speaker by it's price tag!) Anyway, If any one is interested in the KG 5.5's let me know and we can work out the details. You know from this thread everything that had been done to them. Location: Chicago Suburbs 60511
  11. Well, as long as you don't turn it up very loud, it will be fine. But lets be honest, no one would ever connect this up and be able to resist the urge to see what it can do! So, I would say you can rewire the sub temporarily to be at an 8 ohm load. (The 18's are dual 2 ohm voice coils from what I remember when I built mine, correct?... so make each driver a 4 ohm load and then run them in series to achieve a safe 8 ohm load.)
  12. That is a great strategy! "Gee honey, I've had them for sale for months now! Not one single person has asked about them... boy, the economy is really in the dumps! I guess we'll just have to just leave them connected for now."
  13. Well, all I am saying is that one might have better luck if they didn't try to sell a 2000 toyota camry for the same price as a 2021 toyota camry, just so they can buy a new camry!
  14. Am I missing something? Yes, the extra drivers are a nice touch if you're clumsy, move a lot or have kids and find yourself constantly damaging your speakers, but.... this is in the Brand new RF-7 III price range. https://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/ele/d/hampshire-klipsch-rf-speakers/7284860418.html
  15. When I test them, I have a speaker switch that allows me to set both pairs at the same dB level. This is nice because all too often people perceive louder as better when they are doing an A/B comparison. I am running an Emotiva USP-1 pre-amp into an Emotiva XPA-5 power amp, so really middle of the road equipment that the average stereo enthusiast might own. If there is less distortion, then it may be measurable on equipment, but not perceived by my ears. For me, the Monitor 7's are more enjoyable to listen to. But like a nice glass of wine, each person will enjoy it differently... but they key is to enjoy it!
  16. Well, I have been so busy with all of the extra b.s. I have to do now that we are doing a hybrid school schedule. That's right, I not only have to teach to the students sitting in my classroom, but, at the same time I also have to teach the ones remotely at home on their laptops via zoom. (all the time with a mask on so nobody can tell what the heck I'm saying anyway!) Hmm, that sounds like the job of two teachers.... but my district is demanding we do it.... and still paying us the same! Anyway, so I only had a chance to A/B them with my Polk Monitor 7's. The did not unseat them. Sure, the KG5.5's have more low end and will play 20x louder, however, I'm not 18 anymore, and I'm going for sound quality, not quantity. (Plus, I run a sub, or two, with every system I have anyway.) However, it was fun to turn them up to reference level for a bit to see what they could do! These speakers were made for impact and presence! I will be putting them up against my RF-83's the next decent break I get.
  17. Could be a decent refinish project. The top woofer on the right speaker isn't original.
  18. My 2 cents is if you're looking for a project, have at it. It can be fun. -Crites Ti diaphragms are $63 shipped for the tweeters. -Dust caps are pretty cheap.... I would replace all 4 to match. I purchased several times from Lord of base.... I was hesitant at first because of the name, but they are actually great and have great customer service: https://thelordofbass.com/product-category/loud-speaker-parts/dust-caps/ I like to refinish speakers, but I am very hesitant to get into a project with speakers that look very neglected.... it says to me they didn't care for them... and that usually translates into cranking the heck out of them usually past their limits (blown tweeters, rubbing voice coils on the woofers, etc.) If you're looking to just part it out, you will most likely at least break even or do a little better, but the frustration dealing with the average person out there might not be worth it! The mids will sell relatively easily. It took about 3 months for the ones I had to sell. I think I sold them for about $100 for the pair. The crossovers sold for $60 for the pair. The tweeters sold for $50. The woofers I still have. (And all of the components were/are in excellent condition)
  19. I use JB Weld because it won't ever fail...well, at least not in my lifetime. If these ever need servicing, the entire woofer will be replaced with something different as there are many options out there these days. I have never blown a driver, so I'm not worried about having this issue (as I always use subs with my systems) I do see your point... if these were more of a rare driver, I would probably use something that could allow the removal of the dustcap without damaging the cone.
  20. And the fun begins... JB weld... painter's tape apply to the rim of the dustcap and place on the speakers... add similar type of object to hold it tight and let dry. Stupid duplicate picture it won't let me remove!
  21. Thanks. I discovered this paint way back in high school ( early 90's) I bought an used 1985 chevy s-10 from my brother than was used as a parts delivery vehicle for an automotive store. So, it had high miles, but was taken care of very well. Needless to say, I wanted to make it a "cool truck" because that's what you do when you're in high school. So, I took out the center dash inserts and painted them with this paint. (I got the idea from a friend who painted their bass guitar using this paint) It tuned out pretty well, so I have always used this paint for small accent projects in the past. So, I decided it was time to go big or go home! Since the cabinets had water marks at the top that wouldn't just sand out, I figured this was the time to try an entire cabinet. I'll post finished pics when I finish replacing the dust caps on the drivers. As usual, one of them was buzzing due to the glue failing over the years.... so, I ordered up 4 new ones and will be fastening them to the drivers today.
