  1. Impressive...doesn't seem to be your typical stash of vinyl in terms of titles or condition. All I ever seem to get for free are Abba and Journey albums
  2. I have used Carver with Cornwalls but the most recent data below is about a year old. In the mid 80's the Carver and Hafler 200+ watts per channel amps were popular with Klipsch but many find that to be harsh combination today. I have used Corns and Carver C500 for a PA system for live music in our house. I have also used a Hafler amp with the Corns for dances in our house. Perfect for college but I didn't prefer the sound today. I prefered my hot rod Dynaco 40watt tube amp to the Carver C500 (which was an early transition design carried over from Phase Linear prior to the cube). There was the sense of power and control in the bass but the highs were harsh. I also tried a similar vintage Carver pre-amp which I didn't like even compared to the Outlaw 1050 AVR. I also tried the Carver C-500 with my B&W speakers. They liked the extra power and it impoved the fullness and drive of the bass but it wasn't a great sound so I sold it for a new amp. I have also used vintage 1960's tube amps both modified and vintage designs. I found the highly modified gear to be attractive but I don't prefer the soft stock vintage sound. In general I have found that I prefer modern designs for both SS and tube amplification.
  3. Q-sound recording are impressive * Madonna - Immaculate Collection * Roger Waters I have a sampler disk as well: Female vocals = Sarah, Sinead, etc. Modern Jazz with drums and guitar - Fourplay Blues - Stevie Ray Classical violins - Carmin Jazz sax - Acoustic guitar - Eric Clapton "tears in heaven" A good sample of different sounds.
  4. Enjoy! The MMF-5 is very popular new for $500. The newer rock CD releases/remasters sound a lot better to me than many originals...especially with boxes that provide interpolation and time and phase correction. The big sellers of rock are easy to find on used lp for $1 (Journey, Abba, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, etc.). Those releases that have never sold much (i.e. The Stooges - FUN HOUSE) are harder to find. Of course high grade Pink Floyd, Led Zep and a few others still sell despite volume. I'm buying college rock and punk from pre 1985. I have about 2500 rock lps which is almost everything I want. I'm looking for 999, Stiff Little Fingers, Stooges, and lot's of indies.
  5. With my Corns I had a stock rebuilt ST-70 and then a Craig Hot Rod ST-70 which I liked a lot more. Since these need a pre-amp the combo can get a bit pricey. I've since been using a Melody integrated (new and under $700).
  6. I had a KLF-C7 center and Cornwalls. I then switched to a Heresy center. I thought the C7 did a better job of imaging for center dialog but didn't blend as well with the Corns nor did it play as strong & loud. The only center I would consider now with Cornwalls is another Cornwall (or Belle/La Scala) but that is a monster of a box. I think an all KLF HT would be easier to place and probably perferable than a hybrid. I prefer the build of Heritage vs KLF. $1100 is high for oiled Walnut unless they are like new (no rings from water marks, gouges, chips, etc.). Like new with minor flaws in finish should be around $800.
  7. I'm selling the following bundle of vinyl for $12 media mail delivered within the US. Grading is Goldmine (vinyl, cover): photo: http://toad5.inkfrog.com/super/images/image_view.php?image=DSC_0033.JPG The price is low because of condition. ASIA - Astra (NrMt, NrMt) TED NUGENT - State of Shock (VG+,VG) White Label promo but black magic marker blacks out the "not for sale" and "NOV" is written on label RUSH - Caress of Steel (VG,VG+) GRAND FUNK HITS - (VG, VG+) ROLLING STONES - Between the Buttons - Mono LL 3499 (VG,VG "chip" written in ink on cover) ROLLNG STONES - Goats Head Soup (VG,VG) BEATLES: Hey Jude (VG-, VG) BEATLES: Let it Be (G, G) - don't play this with a nice stylus email: kjohnsonhp@comcast.net I'm looking to buy a low price 2-channel receiver or int. amp for my outdoor speakers. I'm also buying: * college rock/punk from 1976-1985 * worldwide stamp collections * Have a Nice Decade CD box set
  8. Here are the tiers as I see it (not an excellent segmentation but a conversation starter). I would start with option 1 or 3. 1) Free - $25 If you get a good condition cartridge then you can play all those low price records (most/many of the big sellers from the 70's & 80's can be found for $1 or less). This is a great way to hear lot's of tunes. I bought a Denon dor $3 at a garage sale but that was back when people were unloading their lps for CD. 2) ~$100 Here you get the volume of TT's that were sold in quantity back in the 70's & 80's (Denon, Panasonic B&O, etc.) You have recommendations earlier in the thread. I purchased a B&O used for around $100 but they don't accept standard cartridges. Shop well on ebay and audiogon and you can resell for what you paid minus shipping. Invest big bucks in a cartrige and see big depreciation. 3) $300-$550 This is where you should start if you are testing vinyl for sound quality. For brand new TT's the MMF-5 is very popular and the most highly rated by the mags. I believe there may be some kits that offer better performance in this range. I bought a 3 mos onld MMF-5 for $350. Beware of used stylus. They are so easy to bend and loose performance. Many recommend pay the TT value used only and the stylus is a bonus if it works...you may want to assume it needs replacement unless you can test if first. If you can buy a good used table in this range with a good condition stylus you should be able to resale without much loss, but replacing the stylus on say a MMF-5 is around $185 so paying more than $300 for a used MMF-5 is risky vs simply getting a new one. 4) $1k Rega, Scout Jr, MMF-7, etc. 5) $2.5k VPI Scout, Linn, etc.
  9. I perceive 100db to be too loud, 90db to be loud, 80 db to be turned up (and normally the loudest I play..maybe 85), and 70 db to be typical. The recordings make a big impact in how fatiguing the 80+ db sound is to me. I was never happy with my Cornwalls and tubes or SS above 80db for music....the treble just sounded "spitting in your face" loud. The pounding bass was kinda fun though. The quality of the source and the material does vary the experience...top recordings can play louder. A lot of this may also be my closed 20 x 16' room without wall treatments.
  10. ?<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>Yes - preorderYes - after releaseNo - I will use another gaming solutionNo - I'm not a gamer
  11. This would be my plan, too.
  12. Emotiva MPS1 - 7-channel amp Emotiva DMC-1 pre/pro
  13. My perspective on best sound per dollar: 1) Cornwalls - at around $800 ($600-$100) --pretty big bang for under $1k 2) KHorn - at around $2k -- better than Cornwall but many more choices at $2k/pr 3) La Scalla - at around $900 - better than Corns if you like horn loaded base....I like the big boom of Cornwalls. The Belle seems to be around $1600+ but sound similar to La Scalla so unless you count great looks they would be low on my list. I'm not sure I'm a big fan of Heresy. When I want to listen to heritage I want the big live sound of the big boxes otherwise I might prefer a more traditional cone-driver monitor speaker from an internet or DIY firm with their great image and relaxing sound although it can be tough to find nice ones under $400/pr but they are there. I'm not real familiar with Forte/Chorus so no comment.
  14. I think you can like both but you know you are a gear head when you spend little time listening to complete songs and spend most of your time skipping through demo material and listening to audiophile recordings that are designed as system testers. What's worth more your CD/SACD/LP collection or your equipment ? * 2,000 lps, 800 cds is about equal or more to my gear...depends on the price you put on the media. How long ago did you buy your last piece of equipment ? * I made one purchase in 2005 recently -- an upgrade How old is your oldest piece of equipment ? * I used to have early 1960's tube gear, but now I don't have any obsolete products in my main room but several 1970's & 80's items in other rooms. Do you read music reviews or equipment reviews ? * music reviews and occasional equipment reviews in magazines Do you attend live concerts of any sort or attend Audio shows ? * few of both but I listen to concerts at home With your friends do you talk about the muisic or the stuff its palyng on ? * music except for gear forums like these
  15. how do I delete the duplicate post.?
  16. The Shanling OEMed-- ONIX XCD-88 --(Musichall is another that uses the player) is a nice CD-only player in the $300 range new--$249 B-stock. You can upgrade it or add a fancy DAC later. I have had good results with it for an under $500 solution. What about the Rotel CD player that won TAS product of the year? That is around $699 MSRP I think....$500 used? This page on mods to SONY, etc. is pretty interesting for more expensive solutions. http://www.empiricalaudio.com/ The Onix CD-1 b-stock under $1k is based on a multi-thousand dollar MBL CDP and well respected.
  17. "who listens when there is noise around????" Almost all their customers...that's why they buy them. I use them exclusively on the air plane. I have Synnheiser for in home use.
  18. Were these sealed lps 1980's reissues? UPC codes? I listen to a lot of records...mostly because I like rock from the lp era and a lot of indie stuff is tough to find on CD. Oh yeah...it sounds good, too, but with time & phase speaker correction and a good DAC I've found enjoyment with digital and the ease of use it provides. Gee...I'm listening to an old Kinks lp as I write this
  19. The ear canal products are another very popular option but some like me don't find it comfortable to have them in my ears. Of course another benefit is their size which is nice for traveling. I started using regular home synnheiser headphones which I loved in my house but they weren't appropriate for on a plane. I've used the Bose for several years and been pleased but this isn't an audiophile experience...noisey plane, PC MP3 files, etc. At home I like the Synnheisers better. I like MusicMatch on my notebook setup to display the album art for my songs. It's fun to flip through the jukebox.
  20. There are a few options to consider: 1) DIY - you can assemble an excellent subwoofer for under $500. See GR-Research for a kit. This would be an easy project--especially if you don't want a fancy vaneer. Your room doesn't seem to big either. This may be the best value depending on your time, effort and desire for looks. 2) Sub-only direct brands: The big two are SVS and HSU. SVS tubes or boxes -- very popular and great HT impact. The other big name in direct subs is HSU and Outlaw has a competitor but not a full family. 3) Klipsch - since you own klipsch speakers they get their own number. 4) Known for just subs: REL, Velodyne, etc. 5) many, many more since most speaker companies also make subs. NOTE: The Onix R-DES add-on to any sub allows you to smooth out the frequency response...my sub, placement and room produced a "mountain" looking graph which RDES flattened.
  21. The BOSE noise cancelling headphones are one of my favorite products.... As a frequent flyer I like them even with the sound off, but I mostly like listening to my mp3's on the notebook while I work. The older versions are cheaper on ebay but the new version are flatter. Now at $300 they are expensive and I wonder if there are other brands that are similar but notably cheaper. I'm trying a pair of HP noise cancelling headphones for $50 to see.
  22. The HTPC is a convienent way to listen to music... If you want a great value on a new CD only player the Onix XCD-88 at $299 is impressive. It is a tweaked version of the Shanling player used by MusicHall at over $500. You can upgrade the XCD-88 in stages down the road if you want. I've been listening to this unit for a few days as a loaner...nice for the price. For big bucks I've read great results from many that use the Emperical Audio modifed Perpetual technology P3A DAC...not cheap but reviewed better than the Modwright version. The p3a could be used with the HTPC, too.
