  1. More critical than the height is the spread distance vs. listening distance .. at least that's my experience.
  2. A pair .. one is Serial 7N780 ... with the old style pWk on the front. Age? Value? Thanks in advance
  3. I am finishing a Home Theater and still need a center channel (and a sub - but that's another subject). Right now, I have K-horn mains, RS-7's on the side and two Heresy 1's in the back. The room is very large - 30' wide x 36' deep with a peaked roof (to 14', running the length) with the couch about 15 feet back from the screen which is centered on the 30' wall. The K-horns are about 12' apart, false walls angle them towards the center. I was thinking of buying a RC-7 or Academy (looking for an eBay deal), but then I remembered - hey, I have in the garage a spare set of real theater heresy's (RTH's) - the kind made from 1/2" plywood. Perhaps it makes sense to build new boxes for the RTH's (to fit the available hole better), and align the horns (what's the best way?) and effectively have a double-heresy center channel. The best aesthetic configuration would be the four horns above the TV and the 12" 'ers in separate boxes behind the TV, but I'm open to ideas. Any Advice Givers? Thanks in advance I don't frequent this place much - perhaps this has been covered and someone can send me a link.
  4. I'm looking for a couple good P-P power amps for my Heresy Speakers - does anyone have some for sale? I'm thinking $300 to $400 each, EICO, Heathkit, etc., with the caps and tubes in good shape, and in decent condition. Besides eBay - any in here?
  5. Thanks - they'll go from one theater to another!
  6. P.S.: I bought them off eBay - certainly not one of my better purchases. You can see pics there: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3019970272&category=14993&rd=1
  7. Sorry for the delay getting bcack. These are a Model HDB-12. Serial numbers are 2H768 and 2H765. They are 1/2 5-ply plywood, frankly not well made boxes - at least compared to the other Heresy's I have . I have not tried these H700's out yet. Any info would be appreciated - specifically, since these are planned to be buried in a wall, I don't really care what they look like, but is the thin 1/2" ply box prone to rattle?
  8. ... I just bought a set - sight unseen. They arrived, but the boxes, which were clearly original (or one heck of a good fake) are the same size as a Heritage (I have 2 sets pf them) but the walls are not as thick and of a cheaper material then the Heresys. I was told these were inside another box originally, and that box looked poorly made. The Grill Cloth is just wrapped around the end. The Drivers look great, but ... I guess I'll be looking for or building new boxes. Any idea what these are and what the intent was?
  9. Thank you all for the kind words. I was told they are African Mohogany, but I really don't know. I am certainly looking forward to hooking them up.
  10. With all due respect, I think mine hold a candle in terms of raw beauty - they do not have the plexi logo or wooden horn, and frankly, I've not even heard them yet - they are in the garage waiting on the house - but they are lookers. FWIW - I paid $2,500 for the pair, and another $500 for minimovers.com to move them San Francisco to North Carolina. It took about 3 months for all this to transpire.
  11. I too am looking for a better amp - and can't afford the Mac's. I have an AES 2A3 saved for the K' horns now in the garage - waiting on the entertainment center to be built. The Heresy's are mounted high in a wall, and will be the rear speakers when I get done, but they're all I have hooked up for now. This week-end, I hooked up the AES to the Heresy's. While the Heresy's sounded much better that they did with the Crown DC300 I had - they were harsh with the DC300 - I was not able to get very loud before the SE 2A3 broke up too much, so more power is needed. FWIW, I currently have a Dynaco PAS3 as a preamp. I'm gonna sell the Crown DC300 - but as for what the replacement will be, I'm looking also ....
  12. ... Anyone feel like telling me the aural difference, or directing me to a place where I can read about it? Thanks in advance

I have the room, and can buy a pair for 1/2 the price of a RC-7.

I'm still trying to figure out the font configuration with K-horns flanking a "large" screen (wife insists on an entertainment center)
  17. I too am looking for centers and surrounds in a 7.1 HT. I guess the "Academy" and the "KV-4" are no longer made. Any experience with RC-7 and RS-7 's as decent matches for K-Horns (front) and Heresy's (rear)?
  18. I'm designing a new HT - and planning on using PC in lieu of a processor. The Video is easy - just get an All-in-Wonder card from ATI - but the Audio has been elusive - everyone expects you to tie into their "matched" speaker system with the built in AC-3 decoder (for example). I think I found a soulution - http://www.m-audio.com/products/consumer/index.php# m-audio says it will be available in February - which is perfect timing for me - and they confirm it provides 8 independent (-106 dB noise level) line signals to 8 independent amps and speakers. Just spreading the word, FWIW. Any comments, warning from experienced uses of similar systems appreaciated.
  19. This is a stereo 2A3 amp, just bought off eBay, Item 1945189862. I didn't think is was super cheap, but maybe it was ... ?? I'm OK with a Preamp - just have NO idea what to get, and my guitar amp experience tells me, in general, less is more. I really don't have a CD player budget, or a preamp budget for that matter - it's a little what-ever it takes, but we are not a bottomless pit. Several hundred each would be OK, over a thousand combined would be a very difficult sell. Buying used works for me, let the new owners take the depreciation, and I'll hang onto the resale. FWIW, I'm combining this with a Home Theater system (K-horn fronts, Heresy rears, RS7 sides, RC& front, no subs (unless forced later on into SVS'ers or something), but this 2-channel will be isolated via some switch or cord swap to dedicate it for when I get my time. The room is huge, 36 deep, 30 wide, 12 foot ceiling. Thanks for your your help.

Perhaps some more info from your end on your tastes musically and room etc. kh ---------------- Well I look at it as a beginners project. Having bought it used ($700 at my door) the investment wasn't TOO bad, hopefully I will lose only a little as I develop a better ear - and trade up as needed. As for musical tastes - right now it's rock-a-billy and groovy-blues. I had 800 records and 600 CD's from Bach to Mingus to the Beatles and Beyond, but they, along with my Thorens and Cornwalls were all distroyed in a fire. Now it's time to rebuild. I have replaced a lot with MP3's (don't get TOO mad, they were free off the internet), and doubt I'll go back to Vinyl. My Los Lobos was replaced with real CD's, and I bought Beck's Sea Change, and Jamie Hartford's Live at the Gibson Cafe. I also have the Specialty Records 5-CD set. While making recommendations, how about a CD player going right into the Cary 2A3se? How about 2A3's? I have a bunch of nice 6SL7's and various rectifiers from my guitar amps.

I'm re-plunging into the Audiophile world -- and just bought a Cary 2A3se to go with my just bought K-Horns. None of this can be set up until March'ish, when the house is completed, but I wonder if it is possible to upgrade the OT's on the Cary 2A3se ... Any Suggestions?
  22. Are these the RS-7 and RS-3 series?
  23. I have the same question - looking at the date of your post, no-one here is interested in or is able to help - Did you try anything yet?
  24. I recently learned the bottomw has fallen out of the Vinyl Market. Apparently "conventional wisdom" is they are starting to do CD's more-correctly, so there is less audio incentive in the "old" way of listening. Of course, there is a lot of music only available on Vinyl, just expect prices to be dropping.

We have the potential for a whole new knock down drag out fight over the best type of battery to supply thes babies. ---------------- I play electric guitar - well hack may be a better word - and there has always been a scoff at Eric Johnson's claim he could tell what battery was used in his effects box. Not owning any stomp boxes, I had no opinion. Well the other day I took the plunge. In my research, I came across the following: << http://www.analogman.com/fuzzface.htm >> About 40% down the page, is a link to some sound samples. Look for: "Two NKT 275 versions in a dual true bypass loop box. Starts with Alkaline Duracell (twice), Cheap Gereral Purpose type (twice) then Duracell (twice again) on a Les Paul. Listen to the high end change. DURACELL2.MP3" You can REALLY hear a difference between the battery types. I also like the idea of seperate wire feeds to the power amps - I'll have my electrician - who is re-wiring my house now - complete that.
