The rule of 1/3 d's has to do with attempting to minimize room acoustic problems. However, most people do put the speakers near the room end due to many factors. In my case, if you look at my setup, the screen hangs on a false wall, however no speakers are behind the wall, with the exception of my SVS sub. Although the screen and electronic gear "solidify" the wall, sound is free to move to the end of the room.
I'm not sure if this is what you are trying to achieve. I created the false wall only because my room is narrower at one end. This just made it conveient for me to keep my electronics accessible and have a place to hang the screen that was centered in the room. Other things that will have a greater impact than moving your speakers 1/3 of the way in are room furnishings, number and size of windows, wall construction, ceiling and wall proportions, etc. The best thing to do is to try various locations in the room for speaker placement and see which you like best.
