  1. I am going to buy the diana krall live in paris. Which has a better quality, a normal cd? or a dvd movies audio track? I would prefer it on vinyl, but the nearest record store that I know of is about 6 hours off There is a flea market with a bunch that I will rummage through, so I will be able to get some that way. What is a good way to get a bunch of records? I'm going to be getting a turntable soon with the purchase of all my new tube gear =) and I want to be ready! I'm trying to further my music knowledge and get some good sounding vinyl to show off my stereo. I like rock, classic rock, some classical (such as moonlight sonata), jazz, and blues, such as stevie ray vaughn, bb king, diana krall, and the brian setzer orchestra. If anyone here frequents records stores and wouldn't mind picking me up some records, i would pay them for their trouble. I live in Louisiana BTW. One of my friends is going to italy soon and i begged him to get me some records of an italian woman singing. I love the way that sounds! If anyone decides to, get about 100 bucks worth for me!!
  2. I am going to make 2 seperate systems... cheap solid state for dj stuff, just for fun. such as the sony reciever i have now. all tube and klipsch for the real music!
  3. No, it's definetly worth it from what I've been hearing. If I had ALOT of extra money, I would get that. I will save that for my khorn upgrade a couple years from now I'm still a poor boy! maybe get a whole juicy system! Could I get that to go please? -Justin
  4. Man, you are making me even more excited than i already was!! if thats possible!!!!
  5. NOSValves, I'd love to get that preamp from you, can you hold it for me for about 1.5-2 weeks? I'm breaking the bank here lately with all these purchases! I definetly want it, man i love this forum!
  6. After I picked my jaw up off the ground I saw the blueberry is WAY out of my price range I didn't see a mention of the peach anywhere, but i sent them an email asking about it. I will post the results on the forum if anyone is interested. The main difference between ultra 4a and line 2a is the ultra 4 has phono. and they both have two other inputs, correct? All I need is 2 and a phono. Does anyone have a ultra 4a or a line 2a they want to sell? nos? I havent bought the two tables yet. I may just get one for now, and hook it to the phono input on the preamp to enjoy maximum quality. I will wait till later before getting the dj setup... that way i don't waste my tubes on techno! So that leave me open for any suggestion on a reasonably price table... because it won't need to be a quartz direct drive.. if anyone here who wants to sell me one in the near future (as long as it works and doesn't get broken by ups! ) Thx for all the answers as always guys... if you need any computer help just let me know that's what I do!
  7. Hi everyone I used to read the forums all the time, about a year ago, so no one probably remembers me. I'm about to buy the Dynaco ST-70 from kjohnsonhp. I need a preamp and he told me about the Juicy blueberry and peach. I've read alot about tubes and everything, but I am no expert for sure. I'm not sure where to get the blueberry and peach from any info, specs, and prices (or a link) would be great. I also wanted an opinion on something. I am going to buy 2 technics 1200's and a mixer, to dj with. I'm going to get 2 dj needles, and also the shure archival quality needle to listen to records with. I figured for my preamp that I wouldn't need a phono input because the table would still be running through a 2 channel mixer, and then to the preamp. But I am worried about quality loss if going thru a mixer. I am going to do whatever you think is best as far as the preamp. kjohnsonhp pointed me at: 1. Mark's Juicy Music Peach or Blueberry (couldnt find info) 2. MapleTree Audio Design pre-amps. (looked at the website for this one) 3. AES pre-amp for around $300 (couldn't find website for this either) If anyone knows the link to AES and the juicy preamps I would be happy. I found the Audio Engineering Society's website, but that doesn't appear to be the same people as those who sell the aforementioned preamps. The prices will help me decide alot. I'm sure all three are top notch products, or else he wouldn't have recommended them to me. I am also curious of about how long the average tube life is. My speakers are Klipsch RF-5's I will mainly be listening to records & cds, upgrading to sacd or dvda later on. I have a device that connects to my comptuer thru the usb port and has a high quality da converter that decodes audio (mainly mp3s) I do most of my listening through that... and i know, i know mp3s sound like crap. But once I make this upgrade I plan to mostly listen to records... but now you know my setup. I forget the name of that device, a stream...... something or other. Not HIFI up to peoples here standards, but its better than my cheap-o sound card and was all I could afford at the time.
  8. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1394144807 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1393071194&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1392712065 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1393503537&rd=1 want to see what you guys think about those amps... i want to get one of them... (or maybe if one of you guys have one to sell!) I know the scott 299 are known for a good phono section (a/b better than c/d) BTW, craig how much better are the a/b, ALOT better, or just barely better? Thanks again... and if anyone has something to sell, let me know.
  9. don't think it just relates to speakers... i know i was buzzin pretty hard last night
  10. if Alan bails out... it's all mine *evil laughter* my sony unit makes me want to puke every time i turn it on!
  11. one question, is it a 299 a,b,c,d? and what is the difference? saw d's going for a lot more on ebay... thanks again guys. If the first two back out i'd love to get it!! Been looking for a good amp preamp combo! with a good phono to knock em out! while were on the subject, where does the word ducats come from? is it a foreign term (read i'm from USA). I remember the first time i heard it you were refering to an amp as it had less ducats... for a couple of weeks there you guys had me thinking it was a part of an amp. less ducats (e.g. better sound quality?) lol...
  12. i'm sure it will satisty with it's optimal kanaltrennung... but does it come with a bottle opener?
  13. yeah, i believe in break in periods for sure. I think craziest thing i have heard of so far (not that i'm doubting you guys) is the elevating of cables i think everything is a factor.
  14. what is the air speed velocity of a laden swallow?
  15. It is also a known fact that turning UP the bass on certain bose speakers has been known to decrease bass response!
  16. it's ok, after a bit of practice you will build up callisus (spelling wrong) on your feet
  17. Been working on a theroem for turbo tube rolling... using 3 tubes. It's like a drum roll... but yet it's still a tube roll. You also may have to retake juggling 101, to refresh your skillz. First pop all 3 tubes in oven to get then burned in. Might even want to put on broil for a minute to get the tops nice and brown like in pics. Then too hot to carry, so roll them to the amp. Once there you gotta get a good drum roll going, to realign the 5th dimension of tube elves (small guys in there, trust me). then you jerk the tube out, throw it up in the air (with grimace & in time with music mind you) and delicately slam the tube in your other hand in the socket (while exclaming HOOCHIEMAMMA in the half second of silence in between tube exchanges to entertain your audiophile friends. Then catch the one that's falling and repeat. For a grand finale you may want to catch tubes between your toes and twirl them around (little known more advanced method than tube rolling. Yes, tube twirling is only for those serious audiophiles... geez i have no life
  18. When rolling (not a fatty) a tube, are all 12ax7's (or any tube w/ the same #) compatiable?
  19. while were on tube newbies... what does rolling a tube mean and why would you want to? Does it matter which pin is in which hole, or can the tube just be stuck in the hole with out worrying? How do you set the bias? can you do that on the tube tester? try not to laugh (out loud at least) at my tube ignorance thanks guys
  20. i have super hearing... You guys have seen the little boxes used to run away insects and - or small animals? I can hear those and they KILL ME... Also when riding in cars, some air conditioners make high noises on my dads toyota. The worst things are when you push monitors to their extreme limits 1900 X 1400 with like 85hz refesh rate (19") the CRT's inside them SCREAM.. to the point where i can't stand to use the computer unless the resolution is lowered. Lol
  21. If going with the rf5s you can bi-amp them. Put a set on the horns and your current amp on the bass.
  22. First off i want to say thanks for all the input and once again i have been set straight by the elders of the 2 channel forum!! (i have seen the light, lmao). My listening area is very small 2.5 meters or so from the speakers, so I DEFENITLY don't need a high powered amp. How would volume levels compare between a joLida integrated hybrid (tube preamp + 30 watt mosfet amp) and say a 20 watt tube amp (read scott - eico). My guess is that the pure tube amp would knock out the joLida in volume (and destroy in fidelity). Like mentioned above 1 tube watt = 2 or 3 SS watts. The Mosfets in the joLida being SS (are they high current?). Thanks again -justin
  23. Not the most knowledgeble here, but learning alot as i've never heard (or even seen) a tube amp so i have no standards to compare to (except my sony 100 watt BLAH!! I'm trying to figure out what kind of volume you get out of different amps. how would these following VOLUMES compare to one another. we all know tubes and especially SET is hands down better than anything solid state. Also curious how distortion becomes an issue when having the rig cranked up (anything past 12 o' clock) 3 watts SET VS. 7 - 10 watts normal tube amp VS. 30 watt jolida (tube preamp + mosfet amp) VS. sony 100 watt normal reciever (i.e. circuit city) how would these volume levels compare? I know 30 watts, is not 30 watts, is not 30 watts. You have solid state 30 watts, then 30 watts solid state high current, big difference there. I'm not doubting that you cannot get a loud volume out of a 3 or 7-10 watts, but it just doesn't seem feasible. Unless there is some extra variable coming into the equation with the different typs of tube setups. Such as ULTRA high current, heh. I want the awesome sound quality (e.g. tubes) but i like to have music loud. Not rock concert loud, but a decent volume... you guys know what i mean (i have rf-5's for your knowledge ~99 db sensivity) Because i know the closer you get to the maximum output of an amp the more distorted it becomes. I read in class A the amps work full force all the time, so i'm assuming as the volume gets cranked (on preamp) that it would be the preamp distorting and not the amp. how exactly does that work. And i see that the distortion on tube amps are much higher. Such as <3% tubes as compared to <.05 on solid state. I know all here have sensitive ears, so i'm also wondering why that distortion seems not to come into effect. Thanks guys, i know i have lots of questions, lol!! -justin
