  1. The horns do not need the box. Outside, they will not be subjected to the vibrations of the LF driver. Just noticed your signature... ... does the dynamat help?
  2. Removing the horns from the box would have the effect of increasing the internal volume of the box. In a sealed box system like the Heresy the air inside the box acts as a spring. Changing the volume of the box changes the compliance of the air spring. Springs have a resonant frequency based on the rate of the spring and the mass it is supporting. The larger the box, the softer the air spring, the lower the resonant frequency. This all sounds good but remember that the air inside the box is part of the drivers suspension. The other part of that suspension is the suround, spider and the motor. The system is tuned to deliver a flat frequency response. Increasing the internal volume of the box will lower the resonant frequency of the box but may cause a dip in the frequency repsonse and hurt overall performance. There are many shareware programs available that will let you model senarios with different drivers and different box sizes. You will need to know the Theil and Small parameters(T/S)of the driver you are playing with. Do a search for those on this fourum and you will most likely find them for the Heresy's Woofer. Do a search for "Speaker Design Software" on the net and you will find a few shareware downloads. Plug the parameters into the software and it will show you the effect your changes will have on the system. Good luck and be carefull. Going down this path can be very addicting! You won't realize you are hooked until you own a table saw, a router and everything in your house is covered in sawdust!
  3. Great job Allan, Big D. and Tom!!! These logos are fantastic! This really is a great thing you three have done for the other members of the forum. Truly a selfless act of kindness and a wonderfull display of collaboration. The three of you really have gone above and beyond the call of duty and I for one am truly greatfull! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!! Dan

  5. Will changing the dust cap change the moving mass and therefore change the T/S parameters? If so, won't this change the frequency response? Dan
  6. Big D, Of course you are right. How could it be anything else!! Baseball... ...what was I thinking! Dan
  7. Big D, Allan, Tom, Thanks for putting this project together! Your efforts will certainly make alot of us heritage guys happy! I have a question, was PWK a big baseball fan? I have often thought that the "pie slice" logo looks exactly like a baseball diamond. Home plate at the bottom, foul lines running out to the outfield and the curved lines look like the edge of the infield. Just wondering. Dan
  8. I just bought the decorator heresys in the pics of the that Bill H posted. I can't wait to get them home for a little sprucing up! HDBR Builder, Are the filled nail holes along the top edge somthing that would have been done at the factory? Thanks, Dan
  9. That is a very cool picture!
  10. Allan, Thanks for the quick reply. That is exactly what I was looking for. Chris, If you read this, Very nice!! Dan
  11. I'm bummed out. I thought someone would have a few pictures.
  12. Does anyone have any pictures of Decorator Cornwalls? HDBR, Feel free to repost the pics of your wonderfull looking Heresys too! Thanks, Dan
  13. Will a Altec 515E low frequency driver work well in an Altec 816 cabinet? Advice I have read says that the 515E is a good vented box driver. The 816 is a combo, Front horn loaded / vented box. The cabinet: http://www.wmeckle.com/ALTEC/index.htm Dan
  14. What is the 10ohm 10 wat resistor for? Dan
  15. Hello All, I am building a pair using Altec 515E (16ohm), 909-16A/511b(16ohm) and EV T-35s (8ohm). Could this 1st order crossover be used in this application? would the values of the components change with the impeadance of the drivers? Brother, Looking foward to that schematic Dan
  16. Has anyone tried the Decware Wicked One? I'm considering a DIY project and this looks intrigueing. Seems like a relatively small solution for horn loaded bass. http://www.decware.com/wicked1.htm How do you insert a live link? Dan
  17. Al, Does the 511b really suffer above 6-7khz? The spec on the JBL 2426H is 800-22K. Most of the small format Altec drivers are 500-22k also. Is the dull sound you experienced due to the 511? Is it possible to use a "super tweeter" and still have a 2way system? If you have time check out this link: http://users.starpower.net/je2a3/speakers2.htm This guy says he has a 414Z, 811/802D, and a 3000H in a 2-way system. What do you think? Dan
  18. Tom Brennan, (or other Altec guys) I am going to do the project you outlined in this thread in the next couple of months. I have a pair of the 511b horns and have been looking for some suitable drivers. I saw this pair of 288-16G Drivers on eBay, and I have some questions I hope you can help with. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1394263113 1. How do they compare to the 902 and 909 drivers? 2. Are these the "large" format? 3. Are they really worth that much?! Thanks for any insight you can provide! Dan
  19. Wow! That looks fantastic! Nice job John!
  20. I am considering a DIY project utilizing a K-33-E woofer. I would like to end up with a frequency response similar to the Cornwall at the low end. How much of a role does the shape of the cabinet play in reproducing bass? The mid horn I want to use is longer than the 15.5" deep Cornwall cabinet. If I build a cabinet with the same internal volume and same vent size and shape as the Cornwall will I get similar performance or does everything change with the shape of the new cabinet? When PWK calculated the internal volume for the Cornwall was the displacement of the horns, drivers, and crossover considered in the calculation or is that one of those things that "doesn't make a dimes worth of difference"?
  21. Mike sounds like you had a fun day! I have a question regarding the Altec 511b Horn. The Heritage line uses horns that follow an exponential curve. In the new products Klipsch uses the tractrix curve for the horns. The idea here is that the tractrix curve provides a closer representation of the natural expansion of the sound wave. My question is what type of curve does the Altec 511b use? In your testing did you take any off-axis measurements?
  22. The fact that the supply is decreasing is whole point. I too am a capitalist. I understand supply and demand, but my speakers are purchased for enjoyment not as an investment. Their market value is of little importance because the only way to get them away from me is after I am gone. It is no less a crime to sell parts out of a heritage speaker in good condition than it is to sell the engine out of a drivable Ferrari, Corvette, Mustang (insert classic of chioce). Now if the car (or speaker) is wrecked beyond repair, then I understand parting it out. If it is an investment you are after then buy stocks, bonds, or real estate(well maybe not stocks) I for one have seen enough classics in the chop shop. Just my opinion.
  23. Is anyone else tired of seeing perfectly good speakers being sold in pieces just to bring more money on eBay??!! dB
