The subwoofer is the SVS PB1-ISD. Its a 12" down firing sub with built-in base plate and a 350 W BASH amp. What does all that mean? IT meand it totally rocks. I am totally pleased with this unit. It has gain and crossover controls. When calibrated (using an SPL meter) this sub sounds incredible both when watching and listening to movies and when listening to music. I see that SVS now offers some other colors for this sub.
  2. o yea - the sub is an SVS PB1-ISD
  3. FORTE-II front L an R in oiled oak ACADEMY CENTER in oiled walnut KG 1's in the rear in oiled oak
  4. Richard, Since you are upgrading to FORTE-II's, a speaker no longer in production, I recommend you retain your current center channel temporarily until you purchase an ACADEMY. Dont waste you time looking for other vintage center channels. After a few months on the lookout (this site, ebay, etc...) chances are you will find one. Just do your homework, be patient, and dont overpay. Again, since you decided to go with vintage Klipsch speakers, get the center that was made to match. My system is also vintage KLIPSCH (FORTE-II L&R, ACADEMY center, KG1 surround).
  5. Peter Gabriel - "Secret world live". Audio excellent, video OK. Concert circa 1992 Recently Peter released "Growing Up" Audio excellent, video good. Play both of these in DTS for best results. If you like his music, these are must haves, both of them Also note that about a decade went by between these two releases. On "Secret World Live" Peter Gabriel looks the way you remember him. On the new DVD release, I almost mistook him as COL Kurtz from Apocalypse Now.
  6. I recently replaced and RC3-II with an Academy (to better match my FORTE-II in front) and I have a couple of questions. First, I noticed that the RC3-II had this nifty adjustable rubber peg on the back edge that can be used tilt the speaker forward so that it can be perfectly aimed at the listening area. The Acedemy doesnt have this and I found that, when sitting atop my 57" with a zero degree elevation, I needed to bump up the center channel level when calibrating the system. Do most folks put something on the back edge to tilt the Academy forward or just compensate using the channel level? My second question has to do with the Academy weight - I think its 35 lbs and heavier than the RC3-II. I am wondering if my Hitachi 57" RPTV can handle this or if the medium density fiberboard will begin to sag.
  7. I have the PB1 ISD. This sub is totally insane. The PB2 is even bigger than the PB1. I can probably break windows with the PB1 so you can probably bring the house down with the PB2. Whe calibrating with the Avia disk I basically subject my listening room to a low freq vibration sweep. This uncovers the resonant frequencies in the room. For example at a certain low freq, the blinds over the windows start to dance, and at another freq, the HVAC lines above the drywall ceiling begin to howl. this is never a prob when listening to movies or music. I love my SVS and I am sure you will too.
  8. my favorite T3 Scene - when Arlnold tells the kid that the girl is his future wife, then nails the gas pedal and the kid goes flying. You guys want good DVD - Get these two from Peter Gabriel: "Secret World Live" and "Growing Up" If you like his music, the 5.1 and DTS audio is phenomenal. The video is OK (better in "growing up". These disks will really showcase your KLIPSCH HT. Anyone got any other concert/music DVD's to recommend?
  9. My HT speaker system currently consists of the following: Front L an R: FORTE II (oiled oak) Center: Academy (oiled Walnut) Surround L and R: KG 1 (oiled oak) Sub: SVS PB1 ISD This collection of speakers really sounds great. The Academy does sonically match my FORTE-II's. I just recently purchased the Academy from this site. Before purchasing the Academy, I was running an RC3-II in the center slot. I really had no complaints whatsoever using this center channel with the FORTE-II's. IF anything it sounded slight "brighter". I bi-wired the RC3-II center channel and calibrated the best I could using the Avia disk. I pursued the Academy mostly out of curiosity. So, after using the RC3-II, I feel that it is reasonable to use with the FORTE-IIs. There are many, many postings in this forum on this topic. The hardcore autiophile will still tell you that "anything that aint perfetcly timbre matched and worth a plug nickel." Frankly, the imperfections in my own two ears tends to ease the matching rigor. Another thought I had about all is the use of another brand of center channel, any its ability to blend with a vintage KLIPSCH. Perhaps the trade space would open significantly, and perhaps when looking at other brands, theres the potential of a "best kept secret" out there. I always wondered about this. Maybe the absence of a horn in other brands would make this impossible, but who knows...
  10. I have a pair of Forte II's for the front L and R channels of my HT. I used an RC3- series II center channel with them. I really didnt think that it was a bad mix at all. There are a lot of postings in this forum on this subject that you should look at. After reading all of these postings, it was pretty clear that the ACADEMY is the quintessential sonic match to the FORTE-II's. After trolling for a while, I landed one from this site (a very nice transaction with an honest dude). Yes, I'll admit that it is a better match with the Forte-II's but using the RC-3-II's with the forte's really wasnt that far off. I would suspect that the RC-35 would be similar.

  12. I just purchased a Radio Shack Kameleon (sp?). This is the one with the backlit touch pad that illuminates the right set of buttons depending on the mode. I really like it. For only $59 bucks, it seems to do the job, without spending hundreds on other types. There are 4 macros on it. I use the first to power up my HT system, the second macro to boot up in Digital cable mode, the third macro to boot up in high definition cable mode, and the 4th macro to boot in DVD mode. this remote seems to be doing the job. PS - there is a website that evaluates all univarsal remotes - www.remotecentral.com check it out
  13. When I read the Consumer Report article I wondered why they limited themselves to just "consumer grade" equipmnent. They should have thrown a few very high end, high cost speakers into the evaluation mix for comparison. For a good laugh - compare how Consumer Reports and Home Theater Magizine do a component performance evaluation
  14. I would like to buy the Academy. Would you email me some pics. If all looks good. I will buy...
  15. my friend - GET A SUB!!! You wont ge that gut pounding sensation without one. I have an SVS powered sub (the black box model) - its a killer...
  16. I like "KLIPSCHFOOT's" response on this string. These vintage Klipsch speakers sound great but I believe there is a ring of truth to what Klipschfoot's saying. I was in the same boat you are in - upon starting up my home theater, I had a pair of FORTE-II's and KG-1's (both oiled oak) that I had accumulated over the years. For the first generation of my HT, I decided to utilize these speakers and only add a center channel and a sub (to get up and running in a cost effective manner). I purchased an SVS sub, and decided to purchase a Klipsch RC3-II center channel (bi-wired to my HT receiver because the directions said "its better"...). Thus with a minimum investment, I accumulated all 6 sound boxes necessary for 5.1. With this ensamble of mutts, I believe that my HT sounds phenomenal. I calibrated this system with the Avia disk using an SPL meter and tripod. I'll admit that using the timbre signal on the Avia disk (sounds like ticking or clicking noise), I can sense the difference in timbre between the FORTE-II's and the RC3-II. HOWEVER, I have yet to really notice any discernable incongruencies when watching movies (and we watch a lot of 'em now that we have the HT). So I would suggest to you that purchasing a placeholder center channel and later on considering the purchase of an entire set of HT speakers as the next generation of your HT. I wanted to snag an ACADEMY for my Forte-II's because they're the "perfect match" but at 700 bucks, I would rather put that towards the purchase of 5 modern technology products (maybe Klipsch, maybe not). PS - read about your magnets - sorry to hear that.
  17. I thought I would bid on the oiled oak Academy on EBAY. The Auction ended last night. I was in the lead with a $405 bid at t-2 minutes to go and I thought that I actually might be able to get this speaker. Suddenly, 2 or three folks jumped in and, in two miutes left in the auction, the priced skyrocketed to $675 in the closing seconds. Adding shipping, some "lucky" person paid about $700 bucks for an 11 year old speaker. I wonder if the "winner" is a member of this forum. I watched these closing minutes in amazement and amusement. I certainly wasnt going to pay the price it takes to snag one of these center channels- no way. There is another Acedemy on Ebay that I suspect will go for a similar price. These center channel speakers have been hyped to the point that their selling prices are extremely overinflated. I dont know how much they sold for originally, but I doubt that they were 700 bucks in 1992. But hey - if there is a sucker willing to pay, then all the power to the seller - its one of the things that makes this country great.
  18. IT looks pretty beat up. Scratches on the bottom and no grill.
  19. I would be interested in buying it outright... have any photos?
  20. So, The Academy when used with FORTE-II's are pure Nirvana, eh? At first I was skeptical about this, thinking that it was all hyped up. Now you all have me quite curious. I think I'll start trolling for one too, just out of curiosity to see how it blends with my Forte-II's in front (and KG-1's in back). PErsonally I have been pleased with an RC3-II in the center position but apparantly I have been really missing the boat..
  21. "Still in stock" "getting rid of" - whats going on? Is Tweeters getting rid of Klipsch or making room for new models? Som eof the recent posts on the forum seem to imply that the reference series is beinf updated, or sometihng. what gives?
