  1. The best year K-horns to get are ones that are local or driving distance from you and the price is not too high. Ignore how they sound when you go for an audition. The guy who I bough mine from said "put them 5 feet out from the corner and 4" above the ground for the best sound. He had them hooked up to a cheap receiver and played some crappy 80's music for me to hear. No bass, no imaging and overall "average" sound. I handed oner the $$ and took them home (about 8 miles away - I got lucky) After I set them up and figured out that they go deep in the corner they came alive (I thought gee, why do they have a gasket along the back panel that would match up with the corner of the room, this was before I discovered this forum). If you find them and can get them home, just be happy with that, no matter what the year. Anyway, I have learned that any Klipsch speakers that you buy are "about 10 years old" when you ask. That is what 2 different sellers of heritage speakers have told me, both lieing. Chris
  2. Chris R,. I always think of that old Samsonite luggage commercial where after the bags get checked in, they go through a wall opening on a conveyor belt, then the next room is full of apes that proceed to throw the bags at the wall and jump on them, and rip them open. This came out in the mid 70's. A real classic. Chris
  3. Mobile, A Ph.D in structural engineering, OUCH!! This guy likes to abuse himself more than I do. My undergrad was in Engineering (Civil/Structural) and I am now getting Doctorate in Law (sounds impressive but it is just a run of the mill lawschool degree). I can vouch that engineering school was harder than law school (although law school is way more stressful). I guess his engineering background explains his very beautifu/anal work. I tip my hat to him again! Chris
  4. Jeff did a really good job of packing. the side that made it had a box filled with bubble wrap containing the tubes next to it. the side that did not make it didn't have a box next to it, but did have lots of bubble wrap and peanuts. Try wrapping in bubble wrap, put it in a box, then wrap that box in bubble wrap, crumbled newspaper or peanuts, and put in another box. This will cost some $$. With this thing, I don't think that it could have been saved. The whole amp will not sit straight, so the chassis is bent. Who knows what happened to do that, but the amp does work. Chris
  5. When i get some pics of the damage, I will post it. It is a real shame because the faceplate was absolutely flawless! Chris R., Thanks again for the cloth. Chris
  6. I agree with getting the SET's, if he wants to spend that much now. If wanting to try tubes without a major initial investment vintage is the way to go. especially when you consider that if you go vintage, then in 3 or 4 years decide to go with the higher dollar stuff, you can sell the vintage for what you paid for it. But yes, I do agree that the "merry go round" is a bad thing and to get what you want the firat time (if it is in your budget) Chris
  7. this is probably the wrong place to try to sell a new set of K-horns. Everyone here buys "vinatge" speakers and for $6K can get 3 or 4 sets of mint K horns. Try listing on eBay. You may get some takers there. Or try a high end audio dealer with a consignment. say if he sells them for $7k, you get $6Kand he gets $1K. Chris
  8. I am surprised that I am the first to mention this. If you are looking for a lot of bang for really low bucks, look at the scott integrated units, rebuilt by Craig (NOZ440). I just got mine yesterday and it sounds awesome. you can get a unit on ebay for $100-$200 then another $300 or so for rebuild and your ready to go. If you are looking in the SET price range, then that is the way to go. But if you want amp and preamp (ie integrated unit) for $500 or so that sounds great, this is a really good alternative. I think that Deang still has one for sale. Chris By the way, I was worried about the mere 25 watts. I really don't want to turn it past halfway on the volume (I am using K-horns too)
  9. A pair of Belles just went for $2050 on ebay. They were local speakers. I paid less for K-horns in tigerwood (excellent condition) from someone local 4 months ago. Yes, heritage are getting too expensive, at least on eBay. Chris
  10. My HK 630 arrived today too. It is sitting on my desk. I am leaving shortly, but probably cannot hook it up till much later tonight. Now I really can't wait! Chris
  11. I repositioned the Heresys and hooked them up with a cheap JBL freebe L112 subwoofer. This made a huge difference! Getting the horns at ear level (by putting one set on top of the other) made a big difference. then adding the sub so that there is some bass response evened out the sound. The K-horns still have a fuller sound, but a lot of the problems went away. I noticed that the newer Heresys (I think that they are the newer pair - 1984 v 1979) sound a little more nasal that the older ones. The older HDBR ones are pretty smooth. The home theater system has 2 nice cerwin vega subs hooked up to a soundcraftsmen anp and a dbx 120. I am currently running the subs with just "really low" frequencies going to them. If I let say up to 100 hz go to them, the system should even out, especially with the K-horns as front left and right for theater. My only problem is that the center channel heresy will have to sit sbout 10" above the floor (definately not at ear level). I will build an angled riser to help. The left and right surrounds will be high up (about 8 ft) so I will have to angle them down. The rear can be put at about 5 ft, so I can probably let it fire straight and figure that the sound will radiate out (it will be about 14 feet behind the couch on my dining room back wall) One question though, I want to use the Denon as a control center/switching device. Teh Harman 630 will be in a different room. can I run an RCA from the denon to the Harman (about 25 feet). That would be perfect because the Denon remote is RF and can be used anywhere. Then I can use one CD player, tape deck, phono, Computer MP3, etc. Chris
  12. If nobody on the forum can get you to a klipsch replacement part (did you try klipsch parts 1-800-klipsch I think), you can try radio shack. They sell the whole plastic box with both black and red bannana/screw connectors for $5. The screw parts can be taken out and added to your speaker if it fits. Chris
  13. Jeff, Thanks again. And thank you too Chris R., I really appreciate it! Whoever buys your speakers will get a well packaged set I'm sure. By the way, my last reply was in regard to the previous question. (details, location) we must have posted at the same time. Chris
  14. Yea, It is a Scott L-48 rebuilt by Craig in excellant condition. Turbo is in the Northeast, I am in the west. Oh wait, you mean the speakers............ Chris
  15. I forgot to give you the eBay item number: 1948227628 The auction ends in 5 hours and if you are on the east coast, you may already be enjoyingthe evening festivities (it is only 5:30 here) Anyway, hope this helps, Chris
  16. Subegt, There is a decent looking pair of heresys on ebay with a But it now price of $350 + $45 shipping. (although i emailed teh seller and never got a reply, but they are a volume seller. if that does not work Deang has a nice set that he is offering at $450. That was your bid price and his look really nice. Chris
  17. I may be missing something, but I though the point was that the internal wire was not super high end quality stuff, so maybe being so anal about the external wire is a little much (but I am the first to say thatI know nothing about the subject) I will admit that I was surprised when I opened up my heresys and saw crimp connectors instead of soldered and shrink wrapped connections. Chris
  18. If none of you have dealt with turbo, he is an excellant communicator. I bought an amp from him, and send him a money order site unseen. He let me know what was going on every step of the way. (money order arrival, shipping, packaging, tracking number. He even included copies of his emails from his dealings with Craig when he had it rebuilt for me to read - he really went the extra mile, and I didn't have to ask, he just did it.) It should be here in a couple of days and it sounds like he did an excellant packing job too. If you step back from the situation, it sounds scarry too. Imagine telling someone, "hey, I started talking to some guys on a forum, and a month later I send a guy I never met a money order for an amp I have never even seen a picture of." Doesn't sound good, but turbo has been a pleasure to deal with (unless a box with a broken radio shack receiver shows up in place of the scott!!) Anyway, just though that I would vouch for him. Chris
  19. Is it just me or does Dean look a lot like Jim Morrison? I can't enlarge the pic, but I guessed that it was an album cover that I had not seen. Chris
  20. NOZ, I see that you do not have any heresys. I am wondering about the HK amp because my Denon 5800 sounds great with K-horns, but the heresys have little bass. I bought a Harman Kardon 630 twin power vintage unit on HDBR's reccomendation to use in a different room. I will first try it on the Heresys and see how good the bass is. If it is much better, I may sell my Denon for a HK surround unit (If the new units have a warmer sound than the Denon) Are you selling your older unit and what features does it have. You can post direct to me if you like. Chris
  21. eBay drives the price up too much. You get sellers who are willing to pay too much and it drives that auction up too much, but it also affects subsequent auctions. I pretty much stick to the local used market. $621 for used heresys is just too much, especially when shipping is added. This may seem like a bargain to a buyer who was about to buy new for $1200, but it kills the marker for future buyers. Chris
  22. Celtica, Have you tried the HK with Heritage speakers? How does it sound? (warm, good bass etc?) Chris
  23. My heresys have cheap looking wire on the inside (I was thinking about this when everyone was talking about expensive wire). My K-horns are wired with monster (not sure if original or if a prior owner added it) Chris
  24. If you don't mind buying a used receiver, you can get a Denon 5800 (about a year old) without going too much over your budget (The thing was originally $3800 and its replacement the 5803 is over $4000). Not a bad deal when you consider what you can get new in comparison. Chris I have seen HK receivers (New) on eBay for about $1100+ that are 7.1, but I think that you may need an external amo for the two extra speakers.
  25. HDBR, The picture sounds good. I re-tried the heresys. I put one set on top of the other so that the mids and tweeters were near ear level and it really helped. The only problem is that these speakers have no bass! When I switched between them and the K-horns, it sounded the same but like someone turned the mids and tweeters up too high. Watching the short throw woofers barely move made me think. I guess having a 10 foot + horn in front of the k-horns woofer really helps! When I put "unplugged" music on, the Heresys sound fine, they just fall short when having full range music. I think that the surround system really needs the K-horns to fill it out. My subs are crossed over at 80 hz, then ran into a DBX 120 subrarmonic unit with the bass turned down and the subharmonic level up (ie the subs are only getting a synthesized signal fron 20 tp 50 hz). This leaves a gap when using the heresys that can really be heard. Both of my sets of heresys were made before subs were easy to get. It is interesting that they were so popular (maybe most were running tubes with them) I will try the heresys with teh HK 630 and the Scott L-48 when they arrive, but I really don't want to replace the Denon 5800 (it has video switching features that I really need) One last note, I am guessing that the Heresys use a big short throw woofer in a sealed box to "keep up" with the horns. BUT I have built several sealed boxes with rockford fosgate long throw woofers with great results. I guess that I could add some subs with the heresys, but the facy of the matter is that there are other speakers out there that will sound good with the Denon amp (like older JBL L series) I will post after I hear the Heresys side by side with the JBL's on the new amps. Chris
