  1. I have no plans to upgrade my AES. I do realize that there are improvements to be made, and I'll make those improvements by buying different amps and trying different things. Thanks for the info though. Greg
  2. It's weird how things go sometimes. I accidentally stumbled into ownership of this amp, and had it here for a month before I even thought about plugging it in. I knew nothing about tube amps, let alone SET. While this was happening, I begin to lurk around this forum and start to hear about SET. What a coincidence! It all came together very quickly for me. I didn't choose this amp, it chose me! O.k, corny. But it has been a very short and strange journey for me. I bought this as part of two pickup truck loads of stuff from the wife of a deceased audio repairman for $300. You wouldn't believe the load I got for that. Right at this same time, I'm fooling around with 200 watt McIntosh amps and 18" 1500 watt powered subwoofers to "enhance" the Khorns. A month later, I'm lanquishing in midrange nirvana with this flea-sized amp. It could have been so different . . . muddle for years through buying and selling a dozen amps, read years worth of old posts in forums while e-sidling up to the forum eckspurts, endure the humiliation of having the word "Realistic" listed in my signature and thinking that was cool, go through the whole DIY thing, lose my wife, blow up the house, move into a trailer, and then finally find out that my uncle had this AES SET amp sitting down in his basement for years. Boy am I lucky I didn't have to go through all that. Greg
  3. Cornwalls are the best of the lot discussed here. However, as I was reading this thread, I was thinking KLF-30 all along, and then someone mentioned it. You'll love the 30's, and the price is good on these right now. Greg
  4. Love to Chris, very nice offer. I'll have my weekends back after boating season is over, then begins audio/football season, which segues(sp?) into strictly audio season. Greg
  5. kh No, I don't think it has any upgrades. How could I tell? I have only heard this one SET amp and only three different tube amps on my Khorns, the AES SET, a Scott 299B, and a Dynaco ST-70. None of them were checked out before I used them, so who knows what kind of shape they were/are in. I can't wait to try out some new amps and/or upgrades . . . in time. How many watts per channel is my AES putting out? I've heard others talk about 300b SET amps that put out 8 watts per channel. Mine is 300b based, but I always thought it put out 3 wpc. Greg
  6. O.k., Gary, I had a little laugh at your expense. I'm over it now. I would say you're about right. I did a search on ebay and found they've been selling for between $250 and $300. It'll take good photos and a good description, but I think you could pull $300 from them. Cut Throat - I have the Spendor's on one of my other systems, an all Mac system, MR-77, C-28, and MC2100. They do love the power. Greg
  7. I doubt it. Those types of speakers just don't do it for me. Imaging or not, I just don't see the attraction to the little boring sound. I guess if I sit there and analyze it enough, I can appreciate the fairly smooth response, the lack of annoying frequency spikes, the overall tone. I don't think that's how I want the description of my 2 channel system to read. I am totally spoiled with the Khorns. Gary, LOL, you poor soul. I guess you didn't get the warning before you bought those: "Beware of Bose, Distortion Kills" You must be so much happier now with your current set up!? Greg
  8. Yes, but let's keep it our little secret.
  9. I'm sorry Cut-Throat, but I just don't get it. People don't actually sit in a chair in front of speakers like this, close their eyes, and languish in the sound quality? Or do they? I'd say go down to Rat Shack and get a $100 pair of bookshelf speakers if the space is limited. Otherwise, "find" room for a pair of Heresy's. At least with Heresy's I'd feel like I was getting something real, not just another little box. Maybe I'm not giving Spendor a fair shake, but then again, I did put my best sounding cd in and sat back and listened for a while. I just wasn't that impressed. I wouldn't give any more than $240 for them. In fact, I bought a pair of Cornwalls a couple of weeks ago for $250! I regularly run an ad in a local classified-type booklet saying that I buy vintage audio gear and Klipsch speakers. I've had quite a few phone calls. I also check with people who are selling gear and offer them a quick sale for a lot less $. Many people just don't want to deal with selling stuff, especially if it means shipping, and stereo gear isn't exactly selling all that well in the depressed economy of Maine right now. Buy local cheap, sell worldwide at current market value. Thank you ebay! Greg
  10. Spendor 3/5's on ebay for $600. These are tiny little speakers that sound o.k., but if these are worth $600, then my Khorns are worth $20,000. It's amazing how many people contacted me about these little speakers. How can people get so taken in by something so mediocre? I'm not complaining, I paid $240 for them knowing I could sell them for much more! Is this what "true audiophiles" look for in a speaker? UGGGH! Greg
  11. It would be very easy to add grilles to a La Scala, and that's what this looks like. If you look carefully, it looks like the speaker on the right has some kind of edge banding over the plywood edges and the one on the left shows the plywood layers. Someone who has built factory La Scalas would be able to tell if these were factory by the way the pieces of wood are joined together. I think the description leaves a lot to be desired, and in my experience, that's usually a sign to be careful. Greg
  12. Get the ones you really want. Make da*n sure they pack them up properly before shipping. Greg
  13. Yeah, I hear ya Chris, but if it's concise and correct information for 12 bucks, why not? Hey, what's my time on this forum worth these days? I have the DFH collection. Good stuff! Greg
  14. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3041749905&category=14993 Can anyone shed some light on this? Do you think there's any worthwhile information in here that hasn't already been discussed on this forum? Maybe this was put together by someone from this forum? Greg
  15. Win, I know where you're coming from, that feeling that so much is changing in our world and so many things seem to be taken for granted and just thrown away. When something you hold so dear, like a great 2-channel audio system, is seemingly being relagated to old fogie status. But, I always have to remind myself that there are many significant changes taking place in our world that offer us so much more than we ever had in our past, like the internet. When I think about how all of us on this forum are using this great web to improve our knowlege and offer us such widespread access to products and people, it gives me great joy. My system is better than it's ever been, and that is completely attributable to the knowledgable and helpful people on this forum and the internet in general. Dying breed? No, a rare breed, growing, changing, and pushing boundries. Greg
  16. Hey Gary, how are you doing? Put me down for second dibs if Tillmbil doesn't buy it. Thanks. Greg
  17. What a deal! The shipping is only $2.50 for first class and $4.00 for priority. Greg
  18. I saw this ad in a local paper and thought I'd pass it on to the vinyl lovers here at the forum. Records: need to sell contents of closed record store. Some rare. All vinyl in great condition - country, jazz, classic rock, and more. Make an offer for the lot. There are anywhere from five to ten thousand albums! for more information. Must sell! will discuss \ negotiate price with serious buyer! Concord, NH Contact Information 603-225-2870 I don't know anything about this person or the merchandise. Greg
  19. I have a fond memory of my early years when I was first introduced to audio equipment. The guys at New England Music Company here in Maine always had a way of making audio equipment demonstrations interesting and informative (unlike today - boring). They used to take a B&O turntable and gently toss it back and forth to each other while it was playing. It often skipped when one of them jerked it while passing it to the other person, but more often than not, a gentle pass was made with no problems at all. They would also bang their fist on the front corner of the unit while it was playing, quite hard actually. It was an impressive demonstration, and one that no other company in the area would dare try with their Dual, Technics, Phase Linear, or ?? brands. The good ol days, when going to an audio store was interesting. Now it's just one boring black box speaker after another (and yes, sorry, I'm talking about a Klipsch dealer). Greg
  20. I still have these beautiful mahogany KLF-30's for sale. They've been sitting in my living room for over a month and I think it's a shame that someone out there isn't enjoying them. I haven't put them on ebay yet. Only slight scratches on top, otherwise perfect. I need to get $1000 for them plus a fee to cover packing materials and shipping or delivery. I live in Maine and would be willing to deliver in New England. Email me if you're interested glroberts@prexar.com Greg
  21. Wow! This would be the perfect companion piece to my Audio Electronic Supply SE-1 SET amplifier. I like having a remote too. I also like to have a little control over the bass frequencies. I like to make adjustments with certain cd's. Greg

  23. I think the important underlying point being made in this thread is to separate your 2 channel listening system from your home theater. I also second the idea of getting a better CD player, it made a world of difference with my system. Greg
