  1. i think one of the keys to this question isnt the decibel level, rather the frequency of a given sound at a certain level. as we all know a 20hz sound at 120db wouldnt blow out your ear drums, no matter how long you heard it probably, because its a low sound, but at like 10khz it could/will. I think THX combines all freqs into a certain point. I know on our system listening to hard rock and such with lots of cymbals and stuff, i cant even approach reference levels because my ears cant take it, but I can with other types of music and definitely with movies
  2. okay well thanks for the advice but perhaps I should clarify a few things: this is only for a 2.1 system not another 5.1 system. We already have an "ultimate" 5.1 system powerd by klipsch upstairs. Like I already mentioned, they wont allow any heritage speakers because they are too big, and we dont have perfect corners, so it would be pointless to get Klipschorns. RB75s are not in the same league as the RF7s, so please stop mentioning them or any other reference speaker as an alternative. I guess I'm really asking for other bright, high sensitivity speaker brands that we can audition that compete in the same league and price range as the RF7s.
  3. hey thats a nice little stand(s) for what I can assume is an RC7? where did you get that and how much was it?
  4. hmm... i always listen to the denon 3803 at around or at 0db in our 20 x 20 x 8 foot room...
  5. well they dont care if its small profile or not. So we dont want bookshelf speakers, and they wont settle for anything less than the sound that the RF7s produce, but refuse to buy another pair of the exact same speakers for the downstairs that we use upstairs. So, if there is no ETA on the Premier series, then what other companies should I be considering for floorstanders that compare to the RF7s...
  6. Well in the continual quest for an HT, I have moved the RF7s and the PB2+ from the downstairs family room to the upstairs theater, since we got the RC7. That room will only be used for movie screening, not really music. Anyway, so we had these old Bose cubes laying around that I hooked up downstairs, but now, having been used to the klipsch sound, my parents are clamoring for something better. While I certainly appreciate the sentiment, I (we) dont want the exact same speakers downstairs and upstairs, as in the RF7s. I also dont want the heritage line, because they are just too big and I dont want to buy used. So what choices do I have? A while back there was talk and pictures of a Klipsch Premier line or something with a pair of speakers to replace the RF7s. When is or is there even an ETA on those speakers? If so, would they cost around the same as the RF7s? And if Klipsch wont have that out for years to come, what other speaker brands should I demo to get a Klipsch like sound? They are pressuring me to get something by December...
  7. i tried to hide wires by sticking them under the molding at the base of the drywall where the carpet meets the wall, but there's barely enough room for 1 16guage wire under there and its a pain to get out again. its not worth it, just buy some plants or something, or go through your walls, ceiling, etc...
  8. i had a great opinion of B&W speakers from what i read online, until i actaully went to hear them in person. I went to a hi end store to demo a sharp 12ku projector and they had it setup with those speakers and lexicon pre/pro and amp. they were showing the Seabiscuit horse race scene, and it sounded tiny and mute. I didnt like them at all. This was about a few months ago, and today I watched Seabiscuit at home, and felt much more immersive. So, therefore, i think they are overrated, but very pretty.
  9. how much and what does it improve? do you have to have new crossovers for the RC7 too?
  10. i watched Kill Bill 2 today, at reference levels for the most part, and also Seabiscuit yesterday. I think the 3/4" thick weatherstripping did the trick. thanks for the suggestions, you're probably right about the doors being hollow, etc. But I am not really concerned about sound proofing because noone really hangs out upstairs, when i'm watching a movie, and the bass waves travel regardless. I'm very happy that the vibrating stopped though. Now I have a new dilemma, Do any of you have your component rack next to your subwoofer? I mean right next to it? There are only two places I can place the component rack, one right as you walk in, which I dont really like as its fairly close to the door. The only other option is to put it next to the PB2+, which would be fine, but i dont know how strong I need the stand to be if it were there. Anywhere else would fall into the line of sight to the screen and I dont want to see any LEDs while watching a movie...
  11. ---------------- On 8/11/2004 6:10:58 AM picky wrote: Ou8thisSN: Man that is one, COMFY-LOOKING sectional! May I ask the brand name? You have the makings of an outstanding room. You must be on pins-and-needles to get everything finished. How are the wires run from the units under your coffee table? Nice size room. Thanks for sharing. ---------------- thanks for the kind words folks. The room is an upstairs bonus room/bedroom and is 20 x 20. We got the sectional at Rhodes Furniture (www.rhodesfurniture.com). I dont know what the brand name is on the sectional, and my mom already put up the paperwork that came with it. its not berkline or anything, but i think its fairly plush. The seats on each corner recline and so does the middle seat. I sat in each seat for about 20 minutes yesterday while watching Seabiscuit, and the viewing angles didnt seem to be disturbed much at all. this was really our only solution as the berkline stuff was just too expensive and it probably wouldnt have fitted, 5 across. This sectional is also microfiber and has plenty of storage room betweeen the 4 armrests. Like I said, i dont know the name of the set, and its not on their website. However, this is the only microfiber sectional they carry with three recliners, so just describing it, would get you the information. its regularly $1999, on sale we got it for $1599. it was the best deal in nashville, for quality furniture anyway. About the paint, i'd love to paint it, but i dont know anything about painting, nor do i have the energy to do that, as i am still recovering from my health problems this summer. The first priority right now is to get the screen/projector mounted. the wires are run from the denon and the cable outlets behind the sectional, through the middle piece, there is some room under the middle piece where the left piece meets. I know it looks ghetto, but i dont really have a choice, because the DVI cable is only 3 feet long and it runs from the cable box to the projector. That is the reason the components are under the coffee table. how do you guys keep your doors in your room from vibrating? I used 3/4" thick weatherstripping. It makes the doors hard to close/latch but it works, so far...
  12. front to back. The surrounds are Bose model 141 speakers. The PB2+ is behind the sectional on the right side. There is a HD cable box and dvd player under the coffee table, and the denon 1803 (3803) is behind the left of the couch.
  13. okay, so we got our sectional was delivered today, and the HT room is about 75% complete. All thats really left is to mount the projector and put up the screen, and get a pair of RS7s or some other surround speakers... anyway, this is back to front view, yes the RC7 is being propped up by a styrofoam block, I cant think of anythign else.
  14. i dont know if it helps, as i never heard the rf3IIs, but the RF7s put out a sound just like at a theater, if not better. very immersive. I would suggest a long demo with your favorite CDs before you make the plunge...
  15. 1 scuff on one of the tweeter housing. I ignored it...
  16. same here, speakers had attached feet, and manual/spikes came in a plastic bag with scotch tape. It is so hard to get those RF7s out of those boxes, isnt it?
  17. yeah, the subwoofer always has been hooked up through the pre outs on the denon. i dont know how to hook it up in series with the rf7s. i mean, the bass is there, its just not there like it used to be on the onkyo, but then again i always ran the onkyo in stereo mode... i have the avia disc, perhaps tommorrow i'll run a frequency sweep, see what that does. thanks for reading/responding, will let you know.
  18. Okay, so about a couple of months ago, I posted that I bought a Denon 1803, which is the same as the 3803, and that i was having issues with the bass section of the reciever. Well I had that reciever exchanged with another one from the same company. This one also seems to be having the same sorts of issues, which leads me to believe there is some setting or something i'm not setting right or maybe i'm just not used to the way Dolby Digital/ DTS sounds.... anyway, this is the first time i have been able to setup the RF7s in conjunction with the PB2+, and with the RC7, and some bose crap in order to get 5.1 I have tried and really havent noticed much difference between setting the speakers to large or small. The crossover settings on the subwoofer section of the 3803 doesnt seem to matter either, so as of right now, i have all front and center speakers set to small, and the sub set to 80hz. that seems to be the configuration most people here have, right? now there are a few things i cant figure out, which i'm hoping some of you can help me with. 1. what is that "Analog" button for? the manual is extremely vague on this. when i push the button, all the sound goes dead, i dont hear anything. The ONLY things plugged into the back of the denon is 1 SPDIF cable into coax1 for the cable box. 1 SPDIF cable into COAX2 for the DVD player. 2. What does Ext Subwoofer level do? it has a few settings like 0 +5 +10 +15 or something, i didnt hear much of a difference setting them to anything, so i set it to 0. I dont know. On the Onkyo reciever, I had the RF7s hooked up with the PB2+ and there was plenty of bass, on stereo bypass mode. That reciever is like 7 years old and didnt have all these digital controls and what not. There was a simple bass/treble/variable loudness control and a subwoofer on/off control and you can turn the LPF/HPF crossovers on/off. So it was a very easy interface and i got plenty of bass from all my stuff. Am i doing something wrong, or Am i expecting something I shouldnt be getting? Does Dolby Digital have less bass than just plain stereo mode? I know this was the case when i used the onkyo in dolby pro logic mode, it would automatically select "tone defeat" mode and the bass and treble was "muted". With the denon, it doesnt matter if its stereo/dolby/pure direct or anything, it refuses to hit the low notes and i cant seem to figure out why. would there be a way to use the subwoofer's crossovers instead of the denon and wire it in somehow like that? I really hope you guys can help me troubleshoot this thing. Besides that, the sound is great, i just miss my thumps. I even tried moving the behemoth of the sub around to different places, just not the same as the Onkyo...
  19. to each his own i guess, i found a big difference with the grilles off/on on our system. After I heard them with the grilles off, it sounded muted with them on, and i didnt like it. So grilles always stay off, my parents like the look of them so thats not an issue either. I only put the grilles on when my parents invite company over with little children, and i dont want any curious tots approaching those drivers.
  20. any of you bi-wiring? i'm particularly interested in regard to how the bi-wiring performs with denons.
  21. i called klipsch tech support, guy said try goo gone, so i guess i'll just try that. I got impatient and used my nails to collect all the little fibers off the glue, now if you just touch it you will feel the glue....
  22. thanks for all the replies, i think i will try the goo or the lighter fluid thing. I have the sticker, and i kept it with the paper work. local dealer has no more cherry rc7s so i cant get another one, nor do i want to go through all that hassle. anyway, i hope the speaker works, i was just able to get it out of the box somehow. This whole summer i have been extremely ill and recovering, but my arms and legs are too weak to do much of anything, much less lift the Reference 7 speakers. My dad and his friend will be over today to move the RF7s/RC7 to the HT, when i'll get to *finally* hook it up to the svs/denon and experience true 5.1 surround. (had the bose, but it didnt do the room justice) anyway, thanks for all the advice folks.
  23. okay, so there is the serial number sticker that was kind of peeling so i took the whole thing off, and it left the glue. Like an idiot, i set the back of the speaker against the carpet and got carpet fuzz/fibers on where the sticker used to be. I know i cant use paper towels, how do i get the glue/fibers off?
